(March
4, 2008) - UC Riverside suffered a 6-5 defeat at the hands
of San Diego State at the Riverside Sports Complex Tuesday
night. Junior Drew Garcia and sophomore Ryan Goetz each recorded
three hits for the Highlanders who drop to 3-8 after playing
eight games in the past nine days.
Sophomore first basman Mark
Samuelson's solo homer gave the Highlanders a 5-4 lead heading
into the ninth. SDSU rallied back in the ninth though, putting
up two runs against Riverside junior reliever Rob Waite to
pick up the 6-5 win.
UCR used a second-inning
homer from freshman catcher Brett Hambright to take a 1-0
lead. Highlander sophomore starter Paul Bargas escaped a bases-loaded
jam in the first and mowed the Aztec lineup for the next four
innings before running into trouble in the fifth. Three SDSU
singles off of Bargas, tied the game at 1-1.
Two innings later, SDSU
took the lead after putting up three runs off of UCR freshman
reliever Eddie Orozco. An RBI single from Garett Green and
a two-run double from Cory Vaughn opened up a 4-1 advantage.
The Highlanders answered back with a three spot of their own
in their half of the seventh.
Sophomore rightfielder Joey
Gonzales brought home the first Riverside run in the inning
and consecutive doubles by Garcia and Goetz tied the game
at 4-4 after seven complete.
After Samuelson's first
blast of the season gave UCR a 5-4 lead, SDSU started their
ninth with an infield single and the following batter reach
after a Riverside error set up first and second. One batter
later, Brandon Glover doubled home both Aztec runners to put
SDSU up for good, 6-5.
Waite (1-1) took the loss
after allowing the two runs in the ninth. Bargas struck out
two in his five innings of work.
UCR travels to Reno, NV
for a three game series against Nevada beginning on Friday.
