(March
30, 2008) -UC Riverside dropped the final game of their three-game
series with Cal State Fullerton 12-1 at Goodwin Field in Fullerton,
CA Sunday afternoon. Junior Carl Uhl and sophomore Joey Gonzales
each picked up two hits for the Highlanders (7-14, 1-2 Big
West).
Playing a 16-inning contest on Friday and then picking up
a win in Saturday's game that went 12 innings, might have
took it's toll on the Highlander pitching staff. Six UCR pitchers,
four of which were freshman making their Big West conference
debuts, could not contain a #21 ranked Titan squad, allowing
the 12 runs on 14 hits.
Sophomore starting pitcher Paul Bargas (0-3) took the loss
after allowing seven earned runs in 2.2 innings.
UCR held a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third after
a two-out RBI single off the bat of sophomore first baseman
Ryan Goetz brought home junior second baseman Drew Garcia.
CSF then started to string some hits together to take control
in the middle innings, putting up seven runs in third, single
runs in the fourth and fifth, before adding three more in
the sixth.
The Titans picked up eight hits it the seven-run third inning
which was enough for CSF starting pitcher Cory Abriso who
struck out 10 on his way to picking up the complete-game victory.
Gonzales extended his hitting streak to six games after recording
two hits.
UCR travels to play USC
in Los Angeles on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
