4, 2008) - UC Riverside lost a 6-3 decision to 9th ranked
Long Beach State in the first game of the weekend series played
at the Riverside Sports Complex Friday night. Junior center
fielder Carl Uhl finished with three hits for the Highlanders
who fall to 7-16 overall and 1-3 in the Big West.
UCR held a 3-1 lead heading into the fifth, but LBSU (18-9,
1-0 Big West) put up five runs in the fifth to take a 6-3
lead and eventually hold on to pick the Big West victory.
The 49ers recorded five hits in the inning off of highlander
junior starter Stephen Penney, highlighted by a two-out three-run
home run from Jason Corder.
Freshman right fielder Tony Nix led off the Riverside fourth
with a solo homer to left center, evening the score at 1-1
after LBSU had brought one across in the second. Senior Aaron
Wible then gave the Highlanders a 3-1 lead two batters later,
with his team-leading third homer of the year, a two-run shot
over the left center field fence before the 49ers rallied
in the fifth.
Penney (0-3) suffered the loss after allowing six earned runs
and struck out six in his 5.2 innings of work. Sophomore Paul
Applebee allowed only one hit in his 3.1 scoreless innings
of relief for the Highlanders. 49er starter Andrew Liebel
(3-1) struck out seven to pick up the complete game win.
Junior designated hitter Brandon Schnebly came off the bench
to pick up two hits in his first career start for the Highlanders.
UCR continues their series with LBSU at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
