13, 2008) - UC Riverside dropped the third and final game
of their three-game series against the UCLA Bruins 9-5 at
Jackie Robinson Stadium in Westwood, CA Sunday afternoon.
Jordan
Opdyke hit his first home run of the season for the Highlanders
who fall to 9-20 on the season.
UCR
had Joey
Gonzales, Drew
Garcia, and Trevor
Hairgrove each collect two hits but the Highlanders could
not overcome the five runs the Bruins (17-13) put up in the
first two innings. UCLA scored their five runs on six hits
in the first two innings. The young Riverside squad fought
back with three runs in the third, using RBI singles from
Gonzales and Aaron
Wible, along with an RBI groundout from Garcia to make
it a 5-3 game after three innings.
Opdyke
brought the Highlanders back to within one, 5-4, with his
solo shot to left field in the fourth. In the bottom of the
inning, the UCLA offense answered back, using four hits to
bring across two more runs against UCR starter Paul
Bargas to open their lead back up to 7-4.
UCLA
later added single runs in the fifth and seventh innings and
then held off a late comeback attempt in the ninth to pick
up the 9-5 victory. Garcia picked up his second RBI of the
day with a base-hit in the ninth that brought home Hairgrove.
Bargas
(1-4) took the loss after allowing eight earned runs in 4.1
innings. Bruin starter Gavin Brooks (3-2) earned the win after
allowing two earned runs and striking out eight in his eight
innings of work.
Hairgrove’s
fourth inning single extended his hitting-streak to seven
for the Highlanders who next play at San Diego State on Tuesday
at 6:00 p.m..
