San Diego State Uses Middle Innings To Beat Highlanders

Box Score

(April 15, 2008) - UCR dropped a 10-7 decision to San Diego State in a non-conference match-up at Tony Gwynn Stadium in San Diego, CA Tuesday night. Carl Uhl led the way for the Highlanders (9-22) with two RBI including his second homer of the season.

Uhl got the Highlanders an early 1-0 lead with his second lead off home run of the season, a solo shot to left field. He led off a game at Nebraska in similar fashion. UCR then opened up 3-0 lead with two runs in the fourth. Joey Gonzales started off the inning with a base-hit up the middle to extend his hitting streak to seven games. Drew Garcia followed with a walk and then moved up to second on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Aaron Wible. Ryan Goetz followed with a sharply hit single to right that brought around Garcia. Wible, who went to third on the play, then scored on passed ball to give UCR a 3-0 lead.

SDSU (22-15) then began their comeback against Riverside starter Paul Applebee an inning later, as the first four Aztecs each singled to start the fifth. Two runs came across chasing Applebee and then with the bases loaded and nobody out, the Highlanders brought in Rob Waite. Waite struck out SDSU leading hitter Troy Hanzawa for the first out and then got Garret Green to fly out to center field but the Aztecs tied the game at 3-3 as Pat Colwell came home on the Green sacrifice fly. Waite escaped further damage with a strikeout to keep the game tied at 3-3.

In the sixth, the Aztecs rallied for three runs, all with two outs off of Waite. The first run came across on a wild pitch and two more runners came home on a two-run single to open up a 6-3 SDSU lead.
UCR made it a 6-4 lead in the seventh as Daniel Pellegrino led of the inning with a single, was bunted to second, and later came home on Uhl’s sacrifice fly to left.

After the Aztecs added another run in the seventh to take a 7-4 lead, UCR continued to battle as Wible doubled home Garcia to again cut the lead to two, 7-5. SDSU added three runs in the eighth and then gave way to their bullpen who held off a late Highlander rally, as they put up two runs in the ninth pick up the 10-7 victory.

Waite (1-4) suffers the loss after allowing three earned runs in his 1.2 innings of relief. Solow (2-6) earns the win after limiting the Highlanders to four hits in his six innings of work.

The Aztecs take the season series 2-0 from UCR.

The Highlanders wrap up their eight game road stretch with a three-game Big West Conference series at #6 UC Irvine beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday.
