to pick up his first save of the season. |
(April
25, 2008) - Highlander pitchers Paul
Applebee and Stephen
Penney led UC Riverside to a 3-0 win over the visiting
Cal State Northridge Matadors in the first of a three-game
series held Friday night at the Riverside Sports Complex.
Applebee fired 7.1 innings in his first start serving as the
Highlanders Friday night pitcher before Penney shut the door
with 1.2 innings of hitless relief for UCR who improved to
12-24 overall and 6-4 in the Big West.
Daniel
Pellegrino and Brandon
Schnebly each picked up RBI’s in a two-run first
inning before UCR added another run in the eighth on a first
and third double steal to add the third and final run.
The
first three Highlander batters reached before Pellegrino later
brought home Carl
Uhl with a sacrifice fly and Schnebly followed with a
line-drive base-hit to left to score Joey
Gonzales for the 2-0 lead. After allowing singles in each
of the first three innings, Applebee retired the next 11 batters,
six by way of groundout. Applebee continued to pound the bottom
of the strike zone, using a groundball double play and one
more groundout to get through the seventh.
He
hit a bump in the road in the eighth, allowing two singles
to start the inning, but the next Matador grounded into a
fielders choice setting up a first and third situation for
CSUN, with just one out. With the top of the Northridge order
coming up, the Highlanders called upon Penney, who made his
first relief appearance of the season after leading UCR in
appearances out of bullpen last year. Penney went to work,
striking out lead-off hitter T.S. Reed for the second out
and then got Billy Swanson to groundout to end the Matador
threat.
Penney
allowed just a one-out walk in the ninth before getting the
next to hitters to preserve the 3-0 win and pick up his first
save of the season. Gonzales scored two runs for the Highlanders
and Pellegrino extended his hitting streak to six games.
Applebee
(2-4) struck out five and did not walk a batter for UCR who
has now won three of their last four.
The
Big West Conference series continues tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
