(April
26, 2008) - UC Riverside dropped a Big West Conference match-up
to Cal State Northridge 14-5 at the Riverside Sports complex
Saturday afternoon. The Matadors used a six-run first inning
and five-run ninth inning to pick up the victory. Reigning
Big West Player of the Week Ryan Goetz picked up three hits
for the Highlanders (12-25, 6-5 Big West).
After
moving into a four-way tie for second place in the Big West
standings with Friday nights win, UCR could not overcome the
first inning troubles by starting pitcher Matt Larkins. The
Highlander’s leader in wins allowed six CSUN (17-21,
5-9 Big West) runs on four hits including a grand slam to
Ryan Pineda to stake the Matadors to a 6-0 lead.
UCR
battled back though, stringing four hits together in their
half of the second to bring two runs across and added another
run on a RBI groundout from Ben Price to cut the CSUN lead
to 6-3. The Highlanders continued their bid for a comeback
with two runs in the fifth, as an Aaron Wible RBI sacrifice
fly and run scoring single from Goetz made it a one run game,
6-5 after five complete.
The
Matadors then created some breathing room with two runs in
the sixth, to open up an 8-5 and never look back. The two
sixth-inning runs chased Larkins and brought in Ryan Platt
who ended further damage with a strikeout. CSUN recorded seven
hits in the final two innings to tack on six more runs and
pick up the 14-5 win.
Phil
Hann (3-4) picked up the win for Northridge after leaving
with the lead in the sixth. Larkins (5-3) took the loss after
surrendering eight earned runs on nine hits.
Drew
Garcia and Jordan Opdyke each finished with two hits for the
Highlanders.
The
series wraps up tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
