Highlanders Rally In Ninth To Take Opener From Pacific

(May 2, 2008) - UC Riverside rallied with two runs in the ninth for the second consecutive game and picked up a 7-6 win over Pacific in Friday night’s series opener in Stockton, CA. Joey Gonzales tied the game with a base-hit in the ninth and Drew Garcia followed with a RBI sacrifice fly to put the Highlanders (14-25, 8-5 Big West) up for good.

After UCR starter Paul Applebee surrendered single runs to the Tigers (9-32, 2-14 Big West) in the first and third innings before UCR answered with two runs in the fourth. Gonzales led off the inning with a double and a batter later, Aaron Wible launched his team leading sixth homer of the season to tie the game at 2-2.

Pacific regained the lead on a solo homer in their half of the fourth but again UCR came right back with three runs in the fifth. After Carl Uhl brought home Trevor Hairgrove with a sacrifice fly, Gonzales walked and Garcia followed with his second homer of the year to give UCR a 5-3 lead.
UP added a single run in the fifth to cut the lead to one before again regaining the lead 6-5 with two runs in the seventh off of Highlander reliever Rob Waite.

After leaving runners on second and third in the eighth, UCR manufactured two runs in the ninth. Tony Nix got hit by the pitch to start off the inning and Hairgrove singled to put runners on first and second for the top of the order. Uhl then walked to load the bases for Gonzales who promptly singled to right center to bring home Nix as the tying run. Garcia came through with a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home Hairgrove to give UCR a 7-6 lead.

Joe Kelly fired a scoreless ninth to pick up his fourth save of the season. Stephen Penney picked up the win after holding the Tigers to just two hits in his two innings of work before Kelly closed the ninth.

Gonzales recorded three hits and scored two runs along with Hairgrove who also recorded two hits from his nine hole spot.

The two teams resume their series on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
