Two-Out Hits Lead To 7-6 Highlander Win

Box Score
Junior Carl Uhl picked up two hits, drove in two runs, and stole a base in the 7-6 win.

(May 9, 2008) - UC Riverside pushed across three runs in the eighth inning to pick up a 7-6 come-from behind win over UC Davis at the Riverside Sports Complex Friday night. Carl Uhl recorded two hits and two RBI for the Highlanders (17-26 11-5 Big West) who continue their push towards repeating as conference champs, staying on the heels of first-place Cal State Fullerton.

UCR picked up five runs in their final two at-bats, using two Aggie errors, a squeeze play, and two-out eighth inning double to pick up their fifth straight conference victory.

Joey Gonzales continued his hitting tear, smacking a one-out triple to right center in the first. Drew Garcia followed with a single back up the middle to drive Gonzales home and give UCR an early 1-0 lead.

Highlander starter Paul Applebee pitched well with the early lead, retiring the first 11 batters before running into some trouble in the fourth. He allowed four consecutive two-out base-hits, which brought three runs across and gave UC Davis a 3-1 lead.

Things would stay that way until the sixth when Gonzales was at it again, driving a one-out double to the left center gap. A Garcia groundout moved Gonzales up to third and Aaron Wible followed with a hot shot up the middle to pick up a two-out RBI and cut the Aggie lead to 3-2.

A Highlander rally started with two outs in the seventh when Daniel Pellegrino singled up the middle. UCR received some help on the next play as Trevor Hairgrove’s pop fly into shallow left field was dropped by UCD shortstop Scott Heylman. Pellegrino slid in ahead of the tag at third and Hairgrove hustled around to second for the lead off hitter, Carl Uhl. Uhl chopped a 0-1 pitch over the third baseman and down the left field line for a two-run double to put UCR up 4-3.

UC Davis came right back as Heylman led off the Aggie eighth with a base-hit up the middle. He was then bunted up to second for Ty Kelly. After the sacrifice bunt, UCR went to the bullpen and brought in Stephen Penney to face the UCD two-hole hitter. Kelly jumped on Penney’s first pitch, singling back up the middle to bring around Heylman to tie the game at 4-4. Two batters later, Ryan Scoma squeaked a ball by the diving Highlander first baseman and through the right side to bring Kelly across as the go-ahead run, giving Davis a 5-4 lead.

UCR answered with three runs in their half of the eighth. Garcia led off the inning with a walk and one batter later Ryan Goetz grounded a ball down the third base line. Ty Kelly made the back hand play but his throw went wide of first and down the right field line, bringing home Garcia to tie the game at 5-5. Tony Nix brought home Goetz, who had made it all the way to third on the Aggie error, with a perfected executed squeeze play to put UCR up 6-5. Pellegrino added a very important insurance run with a RBI-double down the right field line, scoring Brandon Schnebly all the way from first to open up a 7-5 lead.

Pellegrino’s double proved to be huge as UCD brought a run across off of UCR closer Joe Kelly in the ninth before he retired the final batter on a flyout to right. Penney (2-5) picked up the win after the UCR ninth inning rally off of Andy Suiter (4-1) who took the loss after allowing three earned in 1.1 innings of work. Kelly picked up his sixth save; all have come in Big West play.

Applebee worked hard in his 7.1 innings of work, striking out a career-high before leaving with the lead.

UCR continues their series with UC Davis on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
