(May
13, 2008) - UC Riverside pounded out 13 hits to pick up a
12-5 non-conference win over UNLV at the Riverside Sports
Complex Tuesday night. Drew Garcia and Joey Gonzales led the
way with three hits a piece. Carl Uhl scored four runs and
stole two bases while Garcia also picked up three RBI and
scored two runs for the Highlanders who improved to 19-27
overall.
The
Highlanders took advantage of four UNLV (20-33) errors and
used a seven-run sixth inning to put an end to their five-game
losing skid on Tuesdays. The top three hitters (Uhl, Gonzales,
Garcia) combined for eight hits and eight runs scored.
For
the fourth consecutive game, UCR took a 1-0 lead in the first
inning. Carl Uhl led of the game chopping a single up the
middle and later moving to second on a balk by UNLV starter
Jeff Urlaub. Joey Gonzales grounded out, allowing Uhl to scamper
to third with just one out. Drew Garcia then lined a base-hit
back up the middle, bringing home Uhl.
The
UNLV bats came alive during their second time through the
order un the thrid, scoring three runs on four hits highlighted
by a two-run homer off the bat of Mountain West Conference
leading hitter Xavier Scruggs. Scruggs hit his 19th home run
of the season high over the centerfield fence off of UCR starter
D.J. Smith to give the Runnin’ Rebels a 3-1 lead.
The Highlanders came right back with two runs in the bottom
half of the third. Uhl led off the inning with a walk and
then stole second, he later added his 21st bag, to move into
scoring position. Garcia then doubled home Uhl and Garcia
came home a batter later on Aaron Wible’s single to
right center to tie the game at 3-3.
Jesse
Wight gave UNLV a 4-3 lead in the fourth with his solo shot
to right field off of Smith.
Garcia
was at again, picking up his third RBI in as many trips to
the plate, smacking a single back up the middle to score Gonzales
from second and tie the game at 4-4 in the fifth. Gonzales
had doubled the batter before, extending his hitting streak
to a team season-high 11 games.
After
Daniel Pellegrino walked and Justin Shultz singled, both then
runners moved up to second and third on a failed pick off
attempt by UNLV reliever Patirck Darrow. Ben Price came through
with a one-out sacrifice fly to shallow right field. Pellegrino
tagged at third and scored easily as the throw went up the
third base line, allowing the Highlanders to take a 5-4 lead.
Uhl followed with a high-bounding base-hit that got by a diving
Runnin’ Rebel second baseman and into center field,
bringing home Shultz from second for a 6-4 UCR lead. The Highlanders
opened it up after that, scoring five more runs, all with
two outs, on a wild pitch and two more UNLV errors.
UCR
tacked on a run in the seventh as the Highlander bullpen held
the Runnin’ Rebels to just two hits after allowing the
fourth inning home run. Kolby Moore picked up his first collegiate
win after firing hitless fifth and sixth innings. Darrow suffered
the loss, falling to 0-1.
The
Highlanders turn right back around and host USC tomorrow at
5:00 p.m.
