Highlanders To Retire Number of Former Head Coach Jack Smitheran

(Jan. 11, 2006) – The UC Riverside baseball team will retire the jersey and number of former head coach Jack Smitheran during its annual alumni game on Saturday, January 28. The event will be part of the baseball alumni weekend that also includes a golf fundraiser.

The weekend will kick off with the UCR Baseball Alumni Golf Tournament on Friday, January 27 at the Moreno Valley Ranch Golf Club. The event is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start at 11 a.m., followed by dinner and a silent auction.

Saturday’s Alumni Game at the Riverside Baseball Complex will feature the 2006 Highlanders against a team of former UCR players. Expected to return to Riverside are current professional players Troy Percival, Randy Blood, Ryan Harvey, Adam Seuss, Tony Festa, Brian Hoff, John Martinez, Jaymie Torres and Brian Wahlbrink, as well as last year’s draft members Matt Cunningham, Anthony Claggett, and Chad Decker. Fans will also get a chance to view the latest renovations to the stadium.

Before the game, the Highlanders will retire Smitheran’s #2 jersey. Smitheran spent 31 years as UCR’s head coach, leading the program to two NCAA Division II National Championships and the 2003 Division I Regionals. He resigned in 2005 with a career coaching record of 1,097-770-3. Smitheran was inducted into the Riverside Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 and the American Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2002.

The day will start with alumni batting practice at 11:30 a.m. before the game gets underway at 1 p.m. A postgame barbeque picnic is scheduled to which all players, families, and fans are welcome to attend. There is no admission charge for the game but visitors will have to pay for parking.

Highlanders Pound Alumni 12-1 On Day UCR Retires Jack Smitheran's Number

(Jan. 28, 2006) – On a day when the UC Riverside baseball program retired the jersey of former Head Coach Jack Smitheran, the current Highlander squad trounced its predecessors, 12-1, Saturday at the Riverside Sports Complex.

Before the game, the Highlanders honored Smitheran by unveiling his name and the number two in a circle on the centerfield fence.

Once the game started, the Highlanders handed Smitheran his largest loss in 20 months, jumping on the former skipper’s alumni squad for three runs in the first inning, including a two-run double by senior rightfielder Aaron Grant. UCR then showed off its defense, denying the alumni of hits in the second inning on back-to-back diving stops, first by Grant and next by sophomore shortstop Jaime Pedroza.

Junior first baseman Nick Salotti picked up where he left off last season, collecting four hits as the 2006 Highlanders pounded out 18 hits in all. After leading UCR with 77 hits in 2005, Salotti was retired only once, in the fourth, on a spectacular diving catch by alumni right fielder Ryan Harvey.

Sophomore catcher Jeff Dunbar collected three hits and scored a pair of runs despite not entering the game until the fifth inning. Sophomore infielder Aaron Wible, senior infielder Brian Steinmeyer, and freshman outfielder Carl Uhl had two hits apiece.

Matt Cunningham accounted for the alumni squad’s only run with a towering homer over the left-center field wall in the fourth inning. Cunningham hit 10 home runs in his senior season to lead the 2005 Highlanders.

Junior infielder Anthony Cordova singled in a pair of runs during UCR’s three-run fourth. The current squad collected seven hits and scored three times in the eighth against former closer Anthony Claggett.

The Highlanders open the 2006 season next Friday-Sunday with a three-game series at the University of San Francisco.

Season-Opening Series at USF Moved to Riverside

(Feb. 1, 2006) – The UC Riverside baseball team’s scheduled season-opening three-game series at the University of San Francisco has been moved to the Riverside Sports Complex, it was announced today.

The switch has been made due to persistent rain in the Bay Area that made USF’s Benedetti Field unplayable. The weather forecast for the weekend did not show any break in the showers.

The game times for the weekend will be as follows:
Friday, February 3: 3:00 p.m.
Saturday, February 4: 1:00 p.m.
Sunday, February 5: 12 noon

Highlanders Blank Dons 8-0 in Season Opener

(Feb. 3, 2006) – UC Riverside took advantage of being at home for the season opener, shutting out the University of San Francisco 8-0 Friday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex. The Highlanders and Dons had originally been slated to play three games in San Francisco but heavy rains forced the series to be moved to Riverside.

Sophomore RHP James Simmons led the charge on the mound for UCR, striking out a career-high 10 and allowing just five hits and one walk over seven innings. At the plate, all but one starter got at least one of UCR’s 13 hits, led by junior 1B Nick Salotti’s three.

UCR did the bulk of its scoring in the middle innings, scoring once each in the third and fifth and twice in the fourth. The Highlanders tacked on two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings.

In the third, the Highlanders took advantage of a fielding error by USF SS Tavo Hall that put runners on first and third with no out. Junior LF D.J. Hollingsworth came through with a sacrifice fly to put UCR on the board. Salotti then led off the next inning with a double to right-center and senior RF Aaron Grant followed with a double of his own. Grant later came around on an infield single by senior C Jeff Abney. UCR went ahead 4-0 in the fifth as Salotti sent a two-out single through the right side to plate junior CF Brett Bigler.

Meanwhile, Simmons was cruising on the mound. After giving up back-to-back one-out singles in the first, he struck out the next two batters to end the threat. He punched out seven hitters in the first four innings before leaving after the seventh, with UCR comfortably ahead 6-0. Sophomore LHP Dan Runzler and freshman RHP Matt Montgomery each followed with an inning of hitless work to close out the game.

Hollingsworth finished 1-for-2 with two RBI, both on sacrifice flies. Senior DH Andrew Martinez also drove in two runs.

Patrick McGuigan took the loss for USF, allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits in six innings. Scott Cousins collected two of the Dons’ hits.

The teams square off again Saturday at 1 p.m. before closing out the series on Sunday at noon.

UCR Shuts Out USF For Second Straight Game, 7-0

(Feb. 4, 2006) – UC Riverside recorded its second straight shutout to open the 2006 season, blanking the University of San Francisco 7-0 Saturday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex. The Highlanders improve to 2-0 and drop the Dons to 0-2.

Sophomore SS Jaime Pedroza hit a three-run homer and junior LHP Pat Cassa threw 6.1 innings of three hit ball in relief of junior starter Taylor Bills. After Bills left the game in the second inning with a shoulder injury, Cassa struck out five and did not allow a walk to pick up his first win of the season. Four Highlander pitchers combined to limit the Dons to six hits.

UCR scored twice in the first on an RBI double by junior 1B Nick Salotti and a run-scoring single by sophomore DH Aaron Wible. Bills got in trouble in the second when Luke Sommer reached on a three-base error by senior RF Aaron Grant. Bills felt something tweak and Cassa came on in relief, getting Jacob Abramson to ground back to him and then striking out Ben Summerhays to end the USF threat.

The Highlanders blew the game open with five runs in the sixth. With one out, Wible tripled to left center. Senior 3B Brian Steinmeyer, sophomore 2B Drew Garcia, and sophomore C Jeff Dunbar each followed with singles to make it 4-0. Pedroza then blew the game open with his second career homer, sending a high fastball over the rightfield fence.

UCR collected double-digit hits for the second consecutive game, putting up a dozen. Dunbar and Wible each had two, as did junior LF D.J. Hollingsworth.

Ryan Muller (0-1) took the loss for USF, giving up seven runs on 11 hits in 6.0 innings.

Highlanders Sweep Dons With 9-7 Win

(Feb. 5, 2006) - The UC Riverside Highlanders used a five-run sixth inning to help them complete a three game sweep over the visiting University of San Francisco Dons with a 9-7 win at the Riverside Sports Complex Sunday.

The Highlanders improved to 3-0 on the season, while the Dons fell to 0-3. Reliever Dan Runzler (1-0) earned the win for UCR with 1.2 innings of relief of starter Haley Winter, who struck out five and surrendered three runs and seven hits in 5.1 innings of work. Starter Aaron Poreda (0-1) took the loss for San Francisco, surrendering four runs and eight hits in 5.1 innings of work.

Daniel Stang picked up his first save of the year for the Highlanders as he was called on for the last out of the ninth after freshman reliever Stephen Penney surrendered four runs, two earned, in the final frame.

The Highlanders scored a single run in the first with a two-out rally as Andrew Martinez scored on an Aaron Grant single.

In the second, Jeff Abney reached on a bunt single, then took third on a single by Jaime Pedroza, who himself took second on the throw. After Abney was retired at the plate on a Brent Bigler fielder's choice, D.J. Hollingsworth followed with an RBI double over the head of leftfielder Luke Sommer, who initially broke in on the ball only to see it sail over his head.

The Dons scored their first runs of the season in the sixth off of Winter. Jacob Abramson and Joey Railey led off with back-to-back singles and Scott Cousins chased them home with a one-out double. Moments later Sommer crushed a double to right to score Cousins, tie the score at three, and chase Winter. However, Runzler came in and retired the next two batters to quell the threat.

The Highlanders came back to load the bases in the sixth on a lead-off single by Grant off of Poreda and walks to Garcia and Abney by reliever Jason Dufloth. Pedroza scored Grant on a bunt single to first and Garcia came home moments later on a fielder's choice by Bigler for a 5-3 lead. Hollingsworth followed with an RBI single to score Abney, then stole second. Martinez plated the final two runs with a single up the middle for an 8-3 UCR lead.

The Highlanders scored an unearned run in the seventh as an Abney RBI single plated Grant, who reached on a single and went to second on a throwing error. The Dons scored four times in the top of the ninth off of Penney.

Simmons Named Big West Pitcher of the Week

(Feb. 6, 2006) - UC Riverside sophomore James Simmons was selected the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week of January 30-February 5, it was announced today. Simmons earns his second career Pitcher of the Week award and nabs this season’s opening honor.

Simmons, a 6-3 righthander from Norco, led the weekend charge on the mound for UCR, striking out a career-high 10 in an 8-0 win Friday against the University of San Francisco. Simmons allowed just five hits and one walk over seven innings.

After giving up back-to-back one-out singles in the first, he struck out the next two batters to end the threat. He punched out seven hitters in the first four innings before leaving after the seventh with UCR comfortably ahead 6-0.

Simmons was previously named the Big West Pitcher of the Week for the week of February 7-14, 2005. The Highlanders went on to sweep the Dons, taking the series by scores of 8-0, 7-0, and 9-7.

UCR closes out a seven-game home stand with four contests this week. The Highlanders host USC on Tuesday at 5 p.m., then welcome Arizona to the Riverside Sports Complex for a three-game weekend set. The game times are 5 p.m. for Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Errors Cost Highlanders in 13-10 Loss

(Feb. 7, 2006) - UC Riverside suffered its first defeat of the season, falling 13-10 to visiting USC in front of 779 fans Tuesday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex. The Highlanders drop to 3-1 on the season while the Trojans gain their first win to improve to 1-3.

UCR did itself no favors, spotting USC a 10-0 lead after four innings thanks to four errors. The Trojans pushed two unearned runs across in the first when UCR junior 1B Nick Salotti dropped a two-out fly ball with the bases loaded. USC scored three more in the second, all with two outs. With two men on, Cyle Hankerd doubled down the rightfield line and Lucas Duda followed with an RBI single.

Two more unearned USC runs in the third and three more earned ones in the fourth chased UCR starter Marc Rzepczynski (0-1). The junior lefty allowed nine runs on nine hits but only five earned runs. He also walked four in 3.0 innings.

UCR began to claw its way back with a five-run sixth inning. Junior LF D.J. Hollingsworth led off with a single and pinch-hitters Kyle Barratt and Andy Clay followed with singles. Senior SS Brian Steinmeyer was hit by a pitch, bringing home Hollingsworth. Sophomore 2B Drew Garcia then hit a sacrifice fly to plate Barratt and sophomore C Jeff Dunbar knocked in two with a double to knock out USC pitcher Tommy Milone. Sophomore 3B Aaron Wible welcomed Ryan Schlack with a double of his own to make it 10-5.

Just as soon as UCR was back in it, the Trojans upped their lead with a three-run seventh. The Highlanders followed suit with a three-spot of their own in the bottom of the inning, as Garcia delivered a two-run single and Dunbar knocked in one with an infield single.

UCR rallied for two runs with two outs in the ninth but Wible flew out to center with the tying run on deck to end the game.

Milone (1-0) picked up the win, throwing 4 2/3 inning and allowing five runs and nine hits. USC used seven pitchers total, with starter Shawn Olsen throwing a perfect first inning before being lifted.

Dunbar finished the game 4-for-5 with four RBI while Garcia collected a pair of hits and three RBI.

Hankerd and Duda each had four hits and two RBI for the Trojans.

Highlanders Tame Wildcats 8-5

(Feb. 10, 2006) - UC Riverside bounced back from its first defeat of the season for an 8-5 victory over the University of Arizona in front of 682 fans Friday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex. Junior INF Kyle Barratt hit a three-run home run and sophomore RHP James Simmons picked up his second straight win to start the season for the Highlanders (4-1).

UCR twice came from behind, including breaking open what had been a tight game with four runs in the sixth. With the score tied at four, senior RF Aaron Grant led off with a single, advancing to third on senior INF Brian Steinmeyer’s double down the left field line. Sophomore INF Aaron Wible drove in Grant with an RBI groundout.

Steinmeyer then scored when he advanced to third on a wild pitch by Preston Guilmet and came home when the ball was thrown into left field by Arizona catcher Konrad Schmidt. After a walk and a hit-by-pitch put runners on first and third, another wild pitch by Guilmet moved the runners up with one out. Junior OF Brett Bigler hit an RBI groundout, the second of the inning, to bring home the third run and junior OF D.J. Hollingsworth followed with a single up the middle that made it 8-4.

Simmons (2-0) struck out eight in 6 1/3 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on ten hits. Sophomore LHP Dan Runzler bridged the gap with three strikeouts until junior closer Daniel Stange earned his second save with a perfect ninth.

Eric Berger (1-1) took the loss, giving up six runs on 11 hits in five innings.

Arizona (2-2) had taken the lead in the second on T.J. Steele’s two-out two-run triple to left-center. The Highlanders answered back in the bottom of the inning as Barratt hit a three-run home run to give UCR a 3-2 lead. Barratt finished 1-for-2 with three RBI while five other Highlanders each collected two hits.

The Wildcats scored twice more in the third thanks to sloppy UCR defense. First, Wible dropped a foul ball by Brad Boyer but the Highlanders got away with it by getting Boyer to fly out. The next batter, Jason Donald, then lifted a foul ball down the first base line but junior INF Nick Salotti dropped it, giving Donald a second chance, which he gladly took by doubling to left. Three straight singles put Arizona ahead 4-3 before UCR tied it up through an RBI groundout after Hollingsworth had singled and stole second and third.

Arizona Ties Series with 4-2 Win

(Feb. 11, 2006) - The University of Arizona evened up its series against UC Riverside with a 4-2 victory in front of 608 fans Saturday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex. The Highlanders fall to 4-2 while the Wildcats improve to 3-2 on the season.

Arizona got all the runs it would need in the first two innings, scoring three times off of UCR freshman starter D.J. Smith (0-1). Brad Boyer singled on the game’s first pitch and Jason Donald followed with an RBI double down the left field line. With one out, Konrad Schmidt singled through the left side, bringing home Donald. The Wildcats increased their lead to 3-0 in the second on an RBI double by T.J. Steele. Smith lasted just one more batter, going 1 2/3 innings in his debut as a starter.

UCR cut the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the second thanks to a double by sophomore 3B Aaron Wible and consecutive singles by sophomore 2B Drew Garcia, sophomore C Jeff Dunbar, and junior CF Brett Bigler.

The score remained 3-2 until the top of the ninth, when Arizona added an insurance run on a two-out double by Steele and single by Jon Gaston. UCR got a man aboard in the ninth but could not rally.

The pitching stories of the day belonged to the two relievers. After Smith was knocked from the game, junior LHP Pat Cassa came in and delivered 7 1/3 innings of five-hit ball, allowing one run and striking out four in the no-decision.

Arizona reliever Mark Melancon (1-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Mike Colla. Melancon entered with one out in the fifth and closed out the game, allowing just two hits and striking out five.

Dunbar was 3-for-3 with an RBI for UCR while Bigler collected his first multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Arizona Takes Series with 11-5 Win

(Feb. 12, 2006) - The University of Arizona got revenge from last season’s series loss to UC Riverside, taking this year’s finale with an 11-5 victory in front of 473 fans Sunday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex. The Highlanders lose their second straight to drop to 4-3 while the Wildcats take the final two games to improve to 4-2 on the season.

Arizona used a four-run sixth inning to overcome a 5-2 deficit and take the lead for good. Eric Berger led off with a single to chase UCR starter senior Haley Winter. Sophomore Adam Reifer came on in relief and got what would have been a double-play ball but it was booted by UCR sophomore 2B Drew Garcia. Brad Glenn followed with an RBI single to make it 5-3 but Reifer got two quick two outs and looked like he might get out of the inning. Wildness then set in as he hit T.J. Steele to load the bases and a then walked in a run. Sophomore Dan Runzler replaced Reifer and immediately gave up a two-run single to Brad Boyer that put the Wildcats up 6-5.

UCR threatened in both the seventh and eighth innings but could not take advantage. In the seventh, the Highlanders had runners on first and third with no outs and had runners on second and third with one out in the eighth but were denied each time by Arizona’s Dan Schlereth, who struck out six in three innings to get the save.

Arizona scored five runs in the top of the ninth as UCR used four pitchers to try to keep it close.

Ryan Perry (1-0) pitched one inning of relief for Arizona to gain the win. Brad Mills had started the game, giving up five runs (three earned) on six hits in five innings.

Reifer (0-1) took the loss in his first appearance of the season, allowing three unearned runs on one hit in 2/3 of an inning. UCR used seven pitchers, who combined for six walks and six hit batsmen. Winter allowed three runs on four hits in five innings.

The Highlanders had come back from a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the third and two in the fifth before Arizona mounted a rally of its own.

Sophomore C Jeff Dunbar continued his torrid hitting at the plate, going 2-for-3 for his fourth multi-hit performance in as many games. Junior LF D.J. Hollingsworth had two RBI for UCR.

UCR Snaps Two-Game Skid at UCLA

(Feb. 14, 2006) - UC Riverside got back on a winning track, opening an 11-game road trip by beating UCLA 6-4 Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Highlanders snap a two-game losing streak to improve to 5-3 while the Bruins drop second straight to fall to 2-5.

In a game that saw UCR take four different leads, only to see the Bruins answer back each time, the Highlanders pushed two runs across in the ninth for the win. Senior RF Aaron Grant led off the inning with a double to left off Josh Roenicke (0-1). Brant Rustich came on in relief and promptly gave up a single to senior SS Brian Steinmeyer, advancing Grant to third. Grant then beat home an infield roller by sophomore 3B Aaron Wible. Junior 1B Kyle Barratt followed with a single through the right side, scoring Steinmeyer.

Junior RHP Daniel Stange picked up his third save, pitching a scoreless ninth to end the 4 hour and 13 minute marathon. Sophomore Dan Runzler (2-0), the fourth UCR pitcher used, went 1 1/3 innings, striking out three to gain the win.

Sophomore C Jeff Dunbar continued his torrid pace at the plate, giving UCR a 1-0 lead in the first inning with his first career home run, a solo shot off of UCLA starter Brian Schroeder. After the Bruins tied it up in the third on a two-out triple by Brandon Crawford and single by Blair Dunlap, sophomore 2B Drew Garcia gave UCR the lead back with an RBI groundout in the fifth and Dunbar delivered a run-scoring single in the sixth to make it 3-1 to the Highlanders. UCLA again came back, scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run double by Tim Stewart.

Errant pitching played a role in the seventh inning as UCR took yet another lead, only to see UCLA again answer in the bottom of the inning. Steinmeyer led off the Highlander half with a double, was sacrificed to third, and scored on a wild pitch. The lead would only last until the bottom of the seventh, though, as Dunlap walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and then scored on a passed ball to even the score at 4-all.

UCLA threatened to take its first lead in the eighth, loading the bases, but Runzler struck out Eric Taylor, Jr. to end the inning.

UCR junior starter Marc Rzepczynski lasted five innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out four. Rzepczynski left with the lead in the sixth but junior LHP Pat Cassa could not hold the lead. Adam Reifer and Runzler followed before giving way to Stange in the ninth.

Three Bruin pitchers combined to limit UCR to three hits through the first eight innings. Schroeder lasted 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on one hit with six strikeouts. He was relieved by Jason Novak for two innings, then Paul Schmidt before Roenicke and Rustich took over.

Dunbar finished 2-for-4 with two RBI for his fifth consecutive multi-hit game to start the season. Steinmeyer also collected two hits while scoring three times.

UCR vs. Santa Clara Postponed

(Feb. 17, 2006) - UC Riverside’s Friday afternoon game at Santa Clara University has been postponed due to rain. The game teams will attempt to make the game up as part of a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m. Sunday’s game remains scheduled for 1 p.m. as well.

UCR Squeaks Past Santa Clara, 1-0

(Feb. 18, 2006) - Freshman James Simmons tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts in eight innings and sophomore Jeff Dunbar drove in the game's only run as UC Riverside defeated Santa Clara University 1-0 Saturday afternoon at Schott Stadium. The Highlanders post their second consecutive victory to improve to 6-3 and the Broncos fall to 3-5.

It was a pitcher's kind of day as Santa Clara's Sean O'Neill and UC Riverside's James Simmons matched goose eggs through the first seven innings of the contest. The Highlanders finally broke through in the eighth as senior RF Aaron Grant reached on an error by 3B Dustin Realini to lead off the inning. Senior DH Andrew Martinez sacrificed Grant to second and junior 1B Nick Salotti walked. That marked the end of O'Neill's day as Chris Stansbury came on in relief. Dunbar greeted him by smacking his second pitch through the right side to bring home Grant.

Simmons (3-0) tied his career-high of 10 strikeouts that he set earlier this year against San Francisco. He walked only one and gave up five hits in 8.0 innings, his longest outing of the season. Junior Daniel Stange pitched the ninth for his fourth save of the year.

Despite taking the loss, O'Neill (0-1) struck out six Highlanders and did not allow an earned run through 7 1/3 innings. He allowed four hits but also walked four.

Dunbar extended his hitting streak to six games while senior SS Brian Steinmeyer went 1-for-4 to reach safely in his seventh straight game.

Daniel Nava went 2-for-4 for Santa Clara while Matt Long added a double and Kevin Drever and Dustin Realini each singled in four at-bats.

The teams will return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader to cap off this three-game series. The first game is scheduled to start at 12 noon while the nightcap will get underway approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1.

Broncos Rally To Beat UCR in 13

(Feb. 19, 2006) - Santa Clara rallied for two runs in the bottom of the 13th inning to end a marathon game one of a doubleheader and beat UC Riverside 3-2 on Saturday at Schott Stadium. Game two of the day was suspended in the fourth inning due to a power outage with the Highlanders leading 4-1.

In the early affair, the Highlanders (6-4) were one out from their third straight win when Dustin Realini delivered a solo home run off UCR closer Daniel Stange (0-1) to knot the game at two. Things then unraveled for Stange as he gave up three consecutive singles, the last the game-winner by Ryan Conan.

Game one nearly mirrored Saturday's opening game of the series as both teams struggled to put runs on the board in the face of strong pitching. Santa Clara's Justin Kuehn and UC Riverside's Pat Cassa battled in a 1-1 duel through the eighth inning when Cassa was relieved. Kuehn went eight-and-one-third innings, allowing only four hits and striking out four before handing things over to Mark Willinsky, who went 4 2/3 and got his first collegiate win.

The Broncos (4-5) got on the board in the second inning as a Matt Long single plated Realini after he and Eric Newton had reached on back-to-back singles. The Highlanders returned fire in the fourth as a Nick Salotti sacrifice fly scored Brett Bigler with the tying run. For the next eight innings things stayed that way as both pitchers balanced shutting down the opposing offense and also escaping from tough jams.

In the top of the 11th, with the potential go-ahead run on second with two away, UC Riverside's Jeff Dunbar hit a sinking liner to center which seemed destined to fall in for a run-scoring hit but freshman centerfielder Juan Parra made a spectacular diving catch to keep things square at one run apiece. As goose eggs dotted the scoreboard, the Highlanders finally broke through in the top of the 13th. Drew Garcia led off with a single, then was followed by consecutive singles by Jeff Abney and Jaime Pedroza to give UCR a 2-1 lead. The Highlanders had a chance to increase their advantage but Dunbar popped up to second with runners on second and third to end the inning.

In the nightcap, UC Riverside was leading 4-1 after four innings of play when a power outage blacked out the stadium, forcing the contest to be suspended. A continuation date has not been scheduled as of yet.

Highlanders Rally Against Lions, 6-3

(Feb. 21, 2006) - UC Riverside overcame a 3-0 deficit to beat Loyola Marymount 6-3 Tuesday afternoon at Page Stadium. The Highlanders improve to 7-4 and hand the Lions their sixth straight loss to fall to 2-9.

Trailing 3-1 in the sixth, sophomore C Jeff Dunbar started the rally by driving in junior LF D.J. Hollingsworth. The Highlanders then took the lead with a three-run seventh as sophomore SS Jaime Pedroza delivered an RBI double and then scored the go-ahead run on a single by junior CF Brett Bigler. After a sacrifice bunt, Bigler stole third, coming home on Dunbar's RBI single.

Dunbar added an RBI single in the ninth as the Highlanders tacked on an insurance run.

In his second game back after missing five games with a shoulder injury, Pedroza went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Pedroza fell a home run short of the cycle. Dunbar went 2-for-5 for his seventh multi-hit game of the year and drove in three. Bigler had two RBI.

LMU took an early 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two in the second. Pedroza led off the third with a triple and came home with the Highlanders' first run on Bigler's RBI groundout.

Sophomore RHP Adam Reifer (1-1) gained the win, pitching two innings of scoreless relief. Reifer gave up two hits and two walks. Junior RHP Taylor Bills picked up his first career save, striking out two in two innings. Starter junior LHP Marc Rzepczynski went five innings in the no-decision, allowing three runs on seven hits.

LMU used five pitchers, the third of which, Daniel Macias (0-4) took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits in 1/3 of an inning.

Matadors Top Highlanders, 1-0

(Feb. 24, 2006) - Craig Baker of Cal State Northridge and UC Riverside’s James Simmons matched pitch for pitch for eight innings and the Matadors scored the game’s only run in the eighth run to hand UCR a 1-0 loss in a non-conference game at Matador Field on Friday afternoon. The loss drops the Highlanders to 7-5 on the season while the Matadors improve to 8-6.

In a matchup of two of the Big West Conference’s top scoring teams, UCR and CSUN posted goose eggs on the scoreboard for 7 2/3 innings. The Matadors finally broke through in the eighth. Jorge Andrade singled to open the inning and was sacrificed to second by Kris Kasarjian. Brett Blumenthal was then intentionally walked, marking the end of the day for Simmons (3-1) as lefty Dan Runzler came in to face pinch-hitter Paul Wilson. Wilson won the battle, singling through the left side to score Andrade.

The Highlanders loaded the bases in the ninth but could not get the tying run across. Sophomore SS Jaime Pedroza led off with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error by Baker. Junior CF Brett Bigler then bunted Pedroza over to third. Bobby Paschal replaced Baker and walked junior LF D.J. Hollingsworth. But Hollingsworth was subsequently picked off first for the second out. Sophomore C Jeff Dunbar walked, then stole second and junior 1B Nick Salotti walked to load the bases. Jimmy Brettl became the third Matador pitcher of the inning and got the job done, inducing senior RF Aaron Grant to line out to short to end the game.

Baker (3-1) carried a no-hitter through 5 2/3 innings before surrendering a two-out single to Bigler in the sixth. That would be the only Highlander hit until Pedroza’s in the ninth. Brettl got the final out for his second save.

Simmons was also solid on the mound, taking a no-hitter into the fourth. He suffered his first loss of the season despite allowing five hits and two walks in 7 1/3 innings. He also struck out three and hit three.

Both teams had their chances early. Hollingsworth reached third with one out in the first but could not score for UCR. After only one run was scored off eight hits in Friday’s contest, the teams combined for 21 runs and 25 hits Saturday. The Highlanders led the way in the second inning, scoring a run for the first time in ten innings. Sophomore INF Aaron Wible led off the inning with a single up the middle and advanced to third on a throwing error by CSUN pitcher Edwin Quirarte. Another Matador error off the bat of junior 1B Nick Salotti would score Wible and a double down the left field line by senior C Jeff Abney plated Salotti, putting the Highlanders up 2-0.

Andrade and Kasarjian pulled a double steal, and Kasarjian scored during the play on a passed ball. A home run by Scott Lyons put two more runs on the board, giving the Matadors a 3-2 advantage.

A two-run homer by Wible in the third inning allowed UCR to take back a 4-3 lead. but Northridge tied it up again with one run in the fourth inning. Andrade doubled down the right field line to open up the inning and later scored on a single by Todd Shelton.

Riverside opened up an 11-4 advantage thanks to three runs in the fifth, two in the sixth, and two more in the seventh. Senior INF Brian Steinmeyer and senior OF Aaron Grant each had RBI hits in the fifth while a pair of sacrifice flies in the sixth made it 9-4. Abney completed the onslaught with a two-run double in the seventh.

Northridge struck back with a run in the eighth but sophomore INF Jaime Pedroza smashed a two-run homer in the ninth, his second of the season, to give the Highlanders a 13-5 advantage.

Looking for a rally in the bottom of the ninth, CSUN scored three runs but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.

Senior RHP Haley Winter (1-0) got his first victory of the season, tossing seven innings and allowing four runs on nine hits. He struck out a season-high eight.

Highlanders Take Series With 7-2 Win

(Feb. 26, 2006) - Four UC Riverside pitchers combined on a four-hitter and senior INF Brian Steinmeyer drove in four runs as the visiting Highlanders took a non-conference series at Cal State Northridge with a 7-2 victory Sunday at Matador Field. UCR took the last two games of the weekend to move to 9-5 on the season and dropping the Matadors to 8-8.

Steinmeyer was responsible for the first Highlander run as he delivered a sacrifice fly in the top of the first that scored sophomore INF Jaime Pedroza. The Matadors struck back in the bottom of the inning but UCR took back the lead in the fourth when sophomore INF Aaron Wible led off with a triple before scoring on junior INF Kyle Barratt's single through the right side.

Steinmeyer then dealt the biggest blow of the game, hitting a two-run home run in the seventh to put UCR comfortably ahead, 6-1. Although the Matadors pulled a run back in the bottom of the inning, Riverside tacked on an insurance run in the ninth thanks to a double steal by Steinmeyer and junior OF D.J. Hollingsworth that resulted in a throwing error by CSUN catcher Adam Fleener.

Junior RHP Taylor Bills (1-0) showed no ill effects of an injury that caused him to miss two starts, throwing five innings of three-hit ball in which he allowed just one run. Three other Highlander relievers closed it out.
