(Oct. 27, 2007) –
The UC Riverside cross-country teams competed in the Big West
Championships in San Luis Obispo. Both teams shared the feat
of placing higher than any other Highlander team in Big West
History. Brenda Martinez finished fourth in the women’s
race while Ulices Pina finished sixth for the men.
“I’m proud that
our teams had their best finishes in the championships…”
said Head Coach Irv Ray, “…but a little disappointed
that we fell short of some of our goals.”
The team results for the
men’s race were dominated by Cal Poly. Their runners
placed one through five for a perfect score of 15. CP’s
Phillip Reid finished first with a time of 25:12.4.
UCR’s Pina finished with a time of 25:30.5. Raul Lara
(25:47.2) came in 12th, while Michael Buell and Andrew Tachias
finished 16th and 17th with times of 26:07.0 and 26:11.9 respectively.
Daniel Lindstrom rounded out the Highlander runners with a
finish at 27:00.9.
On the women’s side
Martinez crossed the finish line at 21:56.6 in fourth place.
Christina Olivas and Lisa Lopez placed back-to-back in eighth
and ninth place with times of 22:18.5 and 22:22.9. Danielle
Evans came in 16th at 22:46.6 and Celene Reyes ensured that
all five runners would finish in the top 20 with a time of
22:53.2.
Megan Lewis of the Big West
Champion UC Santa Barbara Gauchos won the race with a time
of 21:16.0, 19 seconds in front of the second place runner,
her teammate Bethany Nickless
Even though each team may
have not met their conference goals, both will have an opportunity
to make waves in the NCAA West Regional, held this year in
Eugene, Oregon on Nov. 10th.
