Men and Women Post Highest Ever Finishes at NCAA Regional

(Nov. 10, 2007) – Both the Men and Women Cross Country Teams produced the school's best ever finishes at the NCAA Regional in Eugene, OR Saturday afternoon.

Senior Ulices Pina finished 19th to lead the men’s team who finished 12th out of the 30 competing teams which is their highest placing at the Regional in UCR history. Pina became the first UCR male athlete in school history to earn First Team All-Region honors and qualify for the NCAA Championships.

Junior Brenda Martinez finished 22nd to lead the women’s squad that also achieved their highest finish in school history at the Regional after placing 8th out of 34 competing schools. Martinez is in line to become the first UCR female athlete in school history to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships. She will learn Sunday if she will receive an at-large bid.

Both teams improved form last year’s performances, the men went from 16th to 12th and the women jumped from 11th to 8th. “It was a very solid day for us, it was the best ever finish for both teams. With most of the members returning for both teams, we all are very excited about the future,” said Head Coach Irv Ray.
