Finishes 39th at NCAA West Regional
(Nov. 10, 2001) - UC Riverside senior Jayson Swigart became
the first-ever Highlander to compete at a NCAA Division I
Championship event Saturday, finishing 39th at the NCAA West
Regional at Randolph North Golf Course in Tucson, Arizona.
Swigart ran as an individual in the meet.
Swigart covered the 10,000 meter course in a time of 32:36.30,
1:53 behind the first place finisher, Stanford University
sophomore Donald Sage. Swigart was the sixth best finisher
from the Big West Conference, finishing behind four runners
from UCSB and one from Cal Poly.
Men 6th, Women 9th at Big
West Championships at Cal Poly
(Oct. 27, 2001) - The Highlanders went up against the best
in the Big West Saturday at the Big West Championships in
San Luis Obispo Saturday. Led by senior Jayson Swigart, the
Highlander men finished sixth overall, while the women finished
ninth overall.
Swigart was fifteenth overall in 26:40.7. On the women's side,
Melissa Garza was the top UCR finisher with a 42nd place finish
in 20:02.8. Cal Poly won the team title for the women, while
Santa Barbara won the men's crown.

Men 6th, Women 9th at Cal
Poly Invitational
(Oct. 13, 2001) - Following a bye week, the UC Riverside cross
country teams resumed their seasons at the Cal Poly Invitational
in San Luis Obispo Saturday. The Highlander men finished sixth
overall, while the women finished ninth.
UCR senior Jayson Swigart was sixth overall in 27:07. Sophomore
Israel Gonzalez finished 30th in 28:11.5 for the 8,000 meters,
and senior Ryan Allen was 40th at 28:21.2. Host Cal Poly San
Luis Obispo won the meet. On the women's side, freshman Melissa
Garza was UCR's top finisher, placing 53rd in 20:38.2 for
5,000.

Men 11th, Women 14th at Stanford
Invitational
(Sept. 29, 2001) - The UC Riverside men's cross country
team finished 11th overall and the women finished 14th overall
at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto on Saturday.
Jayson Swigart was the top finisher for the Highlanders, finishing
the 8,000 meter course in 26:12, good for 34th place. Noe
Romo had his best finish of the season, finishing second on
the Highlanders and 65th overall in 27:01. Ruben Espinosa
was third for the team, finishing 71st in 27:15 and Josh Gonzalez
rounded out the top four, finishing 75th in 27:18.
Maribel Campos was the top finisher for the women's team,
finishing the 4,000 meter course in 14:57. Melissa Garza and
Adrienne Alvarado finished neck-and-neck, with Garza edging
Alvarado for 71st, finishing one second ahead at 15:08. Jennifer
Bennett rounded the top four, finishing in 79th in 15:22.

Men 4th, Women 17th at Riverside
Cross Country Invitational
(Sept. 22, 2001) - Led by junior Jayson Swigart's fifth
place finish, the UC Riverside men's cross country team posted
a solid fourth place finish at the Riverside Cross Country
Invitational at the Agricultural Operations CC course. The
UCR women's team, which has several runners battling injuries,
placed 17th overall.
Division III power Claremont-Mudd-Scripps won the men's team
competition, seven points ahead of second place Cal State
San Marcos, a Division II school. Cal State Fullerton was
third with 101 points, nine ahead of UCR. The teams were neck
and neck in the scoring until the fifth runner, where Fullerton
beat the Highlanders by 10 places, sealing third.
The men's race was won by Gray Mavhera in 25:01.9, who was
running in the open division. Open runner Ramon Serratos was
second in 25:12.7. Marcus Chandler of CSSM was the top collegiate
finisher, followed by Tyrus DeMinter of USC.
Swigart ran a solid race, staying with the front pack throughout
the first two miles. He finished with a strong kick that allowed
him to be the top Division I finisher in a time of 25:51,
besting Daniel Cobian of Fullerton by 1.1 seconds.
UCR sophomore Josh Gonzales was 11th overall in 26:02.8, followed
by twin brother Israel Gonzales, who was 18th in 26:27.8.
The women's team competition was won by UC Irvine with 41
points, as they placed all seven of its runners within the
top 13 finishers. Cal State Northridge was a distant second
and USC third.
Individually, Karen Nilsson, running in the open division,
won in a time of 17:46.0, followed by Ursula Kremer, also
running unattached, in 18:09.0. USC's Sara Ellis was the top
collegiate finisher in 18:16.0, followed by Angela Talarico
of Northridge in 18:24.0.
The top finisher for the Highlanders was freshman Adriana
Alvarado, who finished 75th overall in 20:34.0. Junior Maribel
Campos was 84th in 20:43.0 and sophomore Jennifer Bennett
was 102 in 21:02.0.

UCR Finishes 8th, 12th at
UCI Invitational
(Sept. 9, 2001) - The UC Riverside men's cross country
team finished eighth out of 16 teams and the women's team
was twelfth out of 18 teams at the UC Irvine Cross Country
Invitational at Central Park in Huntington Beach on Saturday.
Junior Jayson Swigart led the Highlanders, finishing the 8,000
meter course in 30th place in a time of 27:09.1 and junior
Ryan Allen was 26th in 27:18.6. Freshman Carlos Handler had
his best collegiate finish, finishing 41st overall in 27:24.7.
Sophomore Josh Gonzalez, the Highlanders' top finisher last
week, was fourth on the team and 54th overall in 27:53.7.
Sophomore Melissa Stoll was the top finisher for the Highlander
women, completing the 5000 meter course in 20:00.0. Freshman
Melissa Garza finished 27 seconds behind in 73rd place. Freshman
Kelsey Wright rounded out the top three in 20:55.0 and junior
Maribel Campos was 95th overall in 21:17.8.
UC Irvine won the men's meet, and Northern Arizona took the
women's meet.

Highlanders Begin Season at
CSUF Invitational
(September 1, 2001) - The UC Riverside Highlanders
men's cross country team finished in 6th out of 12 teams while
the women finished 7th out of 15 teams at the CSUF Jammin
Cross Country Invitational.
The meet marked the first official Division I meet for the
Highlanders, which included competition against Big West foes
Cal State Fullerton and UC Santa Barbara.
On the women's side, sophomore Melissa Stoll was the top finisher
for the Highlanders, taking 39th place in 19:29.4. Freshman
Kelsey Wright finished second on the team and 46th overall
in 19:48.7, and freshman Melissa Garza rounded out the top
three by finishing 52nd in 19:59.9.
On the men's side, sophomore Josh Gonzales was the Highlanders'
top finisher, taking 32nd place in 26:01.2. Junior Jason Swigart
finished 36th and second on the team and sophomore Israel
Gonzales finished 46th in 26:41.4.
Stanford swept both the men's and women's championships. The
men placed four runners in the top six spots, while the women
had the top four finishers.
