Highlanders To Host 2008 Big West
Championships
(June 18, 2008) -
Highlanders Head Cross Country Coach Irv Ray announced today
that the Big West Men's & Women's Cross Country Championships
will return to UC Riverside's Agricultural Operations Course
on Saturday, November 1, 2008. Fans interested in receiving
additional information about the Big West Cross Country Championships
may do so by contacting the UC Riverside Athletics Ticket
Office at (951) UCR-GOLD.
Martinez Named UC Riverside
Female Athlete of the Year
(May 28, 2008) -
Sophomore cross country and track and field athlete Brenda
Martinez was honored as the UCR Female Athlete of the Year
Award after finishing fourth in the conference at the 2007
Big West Cross Country Championships and finishing first in
the 800m and 1500m races at the Big West Track & Field
Championships. Martinez qualified for this weekend's NCAA
Regionals in the 800m, the 1500m and the 5000m, and is ranked
12th in the nation in the 800m.

Co-Harper Scholar Athlete of the Year.
(May 28, 2008) -
Co-winners were named for the 2007-08 Harper Scholar Athlete
Award, given each year to a student-athlete whose athletic
and scholarly achievements are deemed most outstanding, as
Erynne Oki (women's tennis) and Danielle Evans (track and
field) shared the honors. Evans, a junior economics major
from Pomona, CA, finished third at the Big West Track &
Field Championships in the 800m. She will represent UCR in
the NCAA Regionals this weekend.

Men's Cross Country Earns Academic All-American Honors
(Feb. 28, 2008) - The UC Riverside
Mens Cross Country team earned Academic All-American honors
by the USTFCCCA after the team posted a 3.003 team GPA for
the Fall semester.

(Nov. 19, 2007) - Senior Ulices
Pina and junior Brenda Martinez became the first male and
female athletes to compete at the NCAA Cross Country National
Championships since UCR joined Division I in 2001.

(Nov. 13, 2007) - NCAA announced
today that junior Brenda Martinez earned an at-large selection
to join fellow cross country runner Ulices Pina at the 2007
NCAA Cross Country Championships in Indiana beginning on Monday.

(Nov. 10, 2007) - Both the Men and
Women Cross Country Teams produced the school's best ever
finishes at the NCAA Regional in Eugene, OR Saturday afternoon.

Finish Second, Men Third At Big West Championships
(Oct. 27, 2007) - The UC Riverside
cross country teams competed in the Big West Championships
in San Luis Obispo. Both teams shared the feat of placing
higher than any other Highlander team in Big West History.
Brenda Martinez finished fourth in the women’s race
while Ulices Pina finished sixth for the men.

Dominate at Cal Poly Meet
(Oct. 13, 2007) – The UCR
men’s and women’s cross country teams took a big
step towards their goal of reaching and excelling in the postseason
Saturday as the teams swept the 2007 VS Athletics/Cal Poly
Invitational at the Fairbanks Cross Country Course in San
Luis Obispo. The Highlander men placed their top five runners
among the top eight places, led by a first-place performance
by senior Ulices Pina, and the women placed their top five
finishers among the top 11, paced by a first place finish
by junior Brenda Martinez.

(Oct. 2, 2007) - The 2007 Division
I Men's and Women's Cross Country Regional Rankings were released
Tuesday, and UC Riverside was featured prominently on both
lists. The women are ranked sixth, the men 11th.

Men and Women Take First Place at UC Riverside Invitational,
Martinez Shines
(Sept. 29, 2007) – The
UCR men’s and women’s cross country teams were
impressive in the 27th Annual UC Riverside Cross Country Invitational
Saturday morning at the UC Agricultural Operations Course
in Riverside. The morning’s event was highlighted by
the outstanding effort of sophomore Brenda Martinez, as she
set a course record with a 5,000-meter time of 16:52.10, besting
the old record by over 15 seconds.

and 450 runners are expected to compete in the 27th Annual
UC Riverside Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, September

were released Tuesday, and UC Riverside was featured prominently

(Sept. 5, 2007) - Junior cross
country runner Cristina Olivas has been named Big West Female
Cross Country Athlete of the Week, the conference announced
Wednesday.

Place First Behind Olivas, Men Second at Nevada Twilight Meet
in Reno
(Sept. 1, 2007) - The Highlanders
cross country teams started the 2007 campaign in a big way
Friday as the women placed first overall -aided by a first-place
effort by Junior Cristina Olivas and four runners among the
top five finishers - and the men second at the Nevada Twilight
Cross Country Meet, hosted by the University of Nevada at
Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno Friday.

Poll
(Aug. 31, 2007) - Both the UC
Riverside men's and women's cross country teams received unparalleled
respect from their peer schools as they were each selected
to finish third in their respective fields in the annual Big
West Pre-Season Cross Country polls.
