(March 11, 2008) –
The Big West Conference announced the Men's Basketball Specialty
awards Tuesday afternoon. UC Riverside junior forward Christian
Soto was voted by the other eight coach's in the Big West
as the Co-Big West Hustle Player of the Year. He shares the
honor with UC Santa Barbara's Chris Devine.
This season, Soto (Caguas,
Puerto Rico) averaged 5.9 PPG and 4.0 RPG, led the team in
blocks (15), made 31 steals, and started in 27 of the teams
28 games. He had career-highs of 13 points in back-to-back
games against Cal State Northridge (2/16/08) and UC Irvine
(2/20/08). The 6'8" Soto stepped up his game it conference
play, averaging 6.3 PPG and 4.6 RBG while being matched-up
against the opposing team's big man all conference season
long.
Other awards went to Frank
Robinson of Cal State Fullerton as the Defensive Player of
the Year and best 6th man went to Cal State Northridge's Deao
Tresvant.
The Highlanders begin play
in the Big West Conference Tournament as the #7 seed against
#6 seed Cal Poly tomorrow night at the Anaheim Convention
Center.
