Riverside dropped a 75–38 decision to the University
of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN Saturday Afternoon. Senior
Larry Cunningham finished with a team-high 14 points for UCR
(2-5).
A tough first half of shooting
hurt the Highlanders, UCR shot 6-of-16 (37.5%) from the floor
and gave up a 24-5 Minnesota run to close out the half. The
Gophers used 8-of-12 (66.7%) shooting from behind the arc
to take a 39-18 lead into the break.
The Highlanders were able
to pressure Minnesota into committing 13 turnovers but UCR
also made some mistakes, giving the ball away 21 times resulting
in 28 points for the Gophers. UM’s tough defense held
the Highlanders to 14-of-46 (30.0%) shooting on the game.
Minnesota continued to rely
on the three-point shot, finishing 13-of-23 (56.5%) in the
game as five different Gophers finished in double figures
in points led by Lawrence McKenzie with 18 including five
three’s. UCR played tough on the boards, battling for
those second chance opportunities, UM owned the rebound advantage
38-28.
The Gophers also took advantage
at the line; picking up 12 points to the Highlander’s
four.
Junior Aaron Scott brought
down a game-high with 10 rebounds and added eight points for
UCR.
The Highlanders return
to California but continue on the road to face another tough
non-conference opponent in San Diego State on Tuesday at 7:00pm.
