(October 22, 2003) –
Freshman Mark Contreras won his first two singles matches,
but was knocked out in the round of 16 as the UC Riverside
men's tennis team competed at the ITA West Regionals held
at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., on Wednesday.
Contreras played seven
sets in the grueling first day of the tournament, defeating
Nick Parinello of Pepperdine, 8-3, and then coming back after
losing the first set to Nick Edelfson of UCSB, 0-6, taking
the next set, 6-2, to force the tie breaker which he won,
10-5.
“Contreras had a
good day,” said UCR head coach York Strothers. “It
was hot out here and played seven sets. Even the pros don’t
do that. He is playing hard, focused and very mature and is
outplaying his teammates right now.”
In his third match, Arash
Bornand of UC Irvine ended Contreras’ run, winning both
sets, 6-1, 6-3, and taking the berth into the main draw.
In his final set and match
of the day, in a doubles pairing with Caesar Regaliza, the
tandem was defeated, 8-4, by Black and Conching of Pacific.
Contreras was the long
Highlander to win a match on Wednesday.
Senior Brett Davis will
play in the main draw singles bracket starting on Thursday,
as well as pairing with Derek Betyar in doubles.
