(January 22,
2008) - The Big West announced it’s 2008 pre-season
poll as voted on by the coaches within the conference. UC
Riverside was picked to finish eighth in 2008 after suffering
through and injury-plaque season in 2007.
The Highlanders
return seven players from a lineup that set a school-record
of homeruns last season with 28. Sophomore Marissa Alvidrez
leads the way after team-highs in batting average, doubles,
and RBI. Junior Big West second team all-conference selection
Tricia Adgar also returns.
The Cal Poly
Mustangs were picked to repeat as conference champs, receiving
two first place votes but getting the top spot by receiving
56 total points. Cal State Fullerton comes in at second, taking
three first-place votes and a total of 55 points. Long Beach
also received two first place votes and was picked to finish
third. Pacifc was places fourth and Cal State Northridge took
the fifth spot while earning a first-place vote. First year
member UC Davis was sixth, UC Santa Barbara was seventh, and
UCR eighth.
UC Riverside opens the 2008 season against
Cal while playing in the Palm Springs Tournament out in Palm
Springs, CA the weekend of February 8-10.
