(February 8,
2008) - The UC Riverside softball team opened it's 2008 season
with a win and a loss in the opening day of the Palm Springs
Tournament in Palm Springs, CA Friday afternoon. UCR (1-1)
dropped a 13-3 decision to perennial Pac-10 power Cal in their
first game but bounced back with a 5-4 win over Portland State
later in the day. Junior Katie Curtis and sophomore Marissa
Alvidrez eac h finished with two RBI.
In the opener
against Cal, UCR was unable to overcome some early jitters,
allowing the Bears (1-0) to jump out to a 7-0 lead after innings.
Alvidrez finished with a double and two RBI in the game and
both senior April Murray and junior Krystal Marquez each recorded
a hit and run scored. Senior Christin Songer (0-1) suffered
the loss after allowing seven earned runs in her four innings
of work in the circle.
The Highlanders
took their second game of the tournament 5-4 over PSU, using
a three-run fifth inning pick up the victory. Junior Stephanie
Marshall picked up her first victory of the season after holding
Portland State to one unearned run in 3.2 innings of relief
of Alvidrez who had started.
UCR continues
play in the Palm Springs tournament tomorrow facing Mississippi
State and #18 Oregon State.
