(February 15,
2008) -UC Riverside rallied from a first inning three-run
deficit to beat the University of Northern Colorado 5-3 at
the "a TEN Construction" Tournament at Amy S. Harrison
Field Friday afternoon.
After allowing
three first-inning runs to the Bears, the Highlanders (2-4)
battled back in the middle innings, picking up a run the second
and two more in the third. The big inning for UCR was the
fourth as senior Kristie Martinez knocked in the go-ahead
RBI with a base hit to plate senior Roni Yee from second.
Sophomore Marissa Alvidrez followed the Martinez hit with
a single of her own to bring Martinez around and open up a
5-3 Highlander lead.
That was all
Riverside senior starter Christin Songer needed, as she shut
the door, retiring nine of the final 11 batters to pick up
her first victory of the season. Songer struck out a season-high
six batters in her complete game effort.
Alvidrez finished
with two hits, and Yee and Martinez each scored two runs.
In earlier
action in the "a TEN Construction" tournament, Creighton
University defeated the University of Northern Colorado 6-3
behind CU pitcher Emily Humpal's 11 strikeouts. Creighton
then beat Loyola Marymount 4-1 in the second game of the day
after another 11 strikeout performance in the circle, this
time by Tara Oltman.
Tournament
action continues tomorrow with UCR facing San Diego at 8 a.m.,
Creighton facing San Diego at 10 a.m., LMU facing Northern
Colorado at 12 p.m., and LMU facing Creighton at 2 p.m..
