(February 17,
2008) - UC Riverside dropped a pair of hard fought games to
San Diego 10-5 and Loyola Marymount 3-0 in the closing games
of the "a TEN Construction" Tournament held at Amy
S. Harrison Field on Sunday. Seniors Kristie Martinez and
Roni Yee each collected three hits on the day for the Highlanders
(2-7).
Martinez picked
up all three of her hits in the game against USD, including
a monstrous homer that landed the street well beyond the right
field fence. Yee picked up two runs and stole two bases in
the same game.
UCR opened
the game with a run in the first on senior Cassie Greenawalt's
RBI single to centerfield that plated Yee. The Highlanders
added another run in the second on senior April Murray's base-hit
that brought junior Tiana Towns around to put UCR up 2-0 after
two.
USD answered
with a four-run third, using back-to-back homers from Jennifer
Ellenbeck and Celeste Soto to take a 4-2 lead. UCR was able
to get a run across in their bottom half on the Martinez homer
and then took a 5-4 lead after a two-run single off the bat
of sophomore Marissa Alvidrez in the fourth.
The Toreros
were then able to get to senior starting pitcher Christin
Songer and junior reliever Amanda Klimczak over next two innings.
USD took advantage of the seven walks allowed by UCR in the
game and put a three-spot in the fifth on a solo homer and
three more hits in the inning. San Diego added two more in
the sixth and one more in the seventh to pick up the 10-5
victory
UCR received
a great effort in the circle from junior Stephanie Marshall
the final game of the tournament, allowing only one earned
run in her seven innings of work. LMU starter Tiffany Pagano
was just as impressive, striking out nine in her complete
game effort.
Loyola put
single runs on the board in the third, fourth, and fifth innings
to pick up the victory. LMU took advantage of three Highlander
errors in the game and used timely base-hits to bring home
those runners who always seemed to be in scoring position.
Yee and junior Krystal Marquez each picked up a hit against
Pagono for the Highlanders.
In earlier
Sunday action, Northern Colorado rallied from two runs down
in the seventh to tie the game and then won the game with
two more runs in the eighth to beat San Diego 5-3. UCR will
play in the San Diego Tournament beginning on Friday against
Nevada and Colorado State.
