– UC Riverside rallied with two runs in the bottom of
the seventh to beat Utah Valley State 2-1 and battled Big-10
power Iowa tough but dropped a 4-0 decision in the second
day of the Amy S. Harrison Classic hosted by UC Riverside
Saturday.
Junior Tiana
Towns' pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the seventh gave
UCR (9-15) a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Utah Valley
State in their first game of the day.
Trailing 1-0,
senior Kristie Martinez drew a walk to open the Highlander
seventh and junior Katie Curtis followed with a free pass
of her own to set up first and second with nobody out. Senior
Cassie Greenawalt then layed down a perfect bunt, pressuring
the Wolverine defense into a committing an error, throwing
wide of first base and allowing the game-tying run to come
across.
With runners
at second and third and still with no outs, UCR was in position
to pick up the win. Freshman Taylor Thomas drew a walk that
loaded the bases for Towns. Towns jumped on the first pitch
she saw, smoking a ball to left field, bringing home the game-winner.
Sophomore
starting pitcher Marissa Alvidrez (2-4) picked up the win
after striking out four in her complete game effort.
In their second
game of the day, the Highlanders struggled to get anything
going against Iowa starting pitcher Brittany Weil. Weil finished
the game with 11 strikeouts to pick up the 4-0 win for the
Hawkeyes. Junior starter Stephanie Marshall (2-6) suffered
the loss for UCR after allowing three earned runs in 2.1 innings.
The Highlanders
close out Amy S. Harrison Classic play against Buffalo at
11 a.m.
In other tournament action, Iowa beat Buffalo 11-0 in six
innings.
