Highlanders Fall To #23 Cal

(March 25, 2008) – UCR dropped a10-4 decision to #23 Cal in a non-conference match-up Tuesday afternoon. Senior right fielder April Murray finished with two hits for the Highlanders (12-19).

The Highlanders battled back in the middle innings but couldn’t overcome Cal's (30-10) seven runs they brought across in the first two innings. Junior starter Stephanie Marshall (2-8) suffered the loss after allowing four earned runs in her first inning-plus of work before handing the ball to sophomore Marissa Alvidrez in the second.

UCR pushed a run across in the fourth as junior first baseman Katie Curtis came around to score on a Golden Bear wild pitch. The Highlanders put together a small rally an inning later in the fifth as senior Kristie Martinez smacked a pinch-hit RBI single to bring across the first of three Riverside runs in the inning. Alvidrez followed Martinez with a two-run single to cut the Cal lead to 7-4.

The Golden Bears didn’t allow any more Highlander rallies and added three more runs off of Alvidrez in the sixth to pick up the 10-4 win.

Alvidrez recorded a hit and two RBI and Murray extended her hitting streak to eight games. UCR continues on the road with a double header at Santa Clara on Wednesday.
