(March 23, 2008) - The UC
Riverside Men's and Women's Track and Field team produced
yet another strong performance, this time at the UC Irvine
Spring Break Invitational. The Highlanders had three more
athletes qualify for NCAA Regionals and numerous others set
personal bests and qualify for the Big West Championships.
In the 800m, Brenda Martinez
and Lisa Lopez finished first and second, respectively, to
punch their tickets to the NCAA Regionals. Martinez produced
the fastest time run in all of the NCAA so far this year at
2:05.54 and Lopez ran a 2:08.40. A day after setting a new
school record and qualifying for the NCAA Regionals in the
Steeple Chase, Cristina Olivas qualified for the BWC in the
1500m with a time of 4:36.14.
Allison Wilder won the
triple jump competition and also qualified for NCAA Regional
with a mark of 40' 10.25." Her jump also broke her own
school-record.
Many other Highlanders
qualified for the Big West Championships. Whitney Leachman
and Molly Russell finished first and second, respectively,
in the 100m. Leachman crossed the line at 12.27 and Russell
produced a time of 12.28 as each qualified for the BWC.
In the 200m, Leachman dominated
her second race of the day, winning the 200m in 24.71 with
Russell running a 25.21 and Treana Hundley producing a personal-best
time of 25.46
Marina Young ran a personal
best and qualified for the BWC in the 400m with a time of
56.38. Ashley Williams also set a personal best while finishing
fifth in the 800m at 2:10.51. In the men's 800m, Pedro Ramos
ran a personal best time of 1:52.05.
In the long jump, Jackie
Lewis broke the school record as well as setting a new Big
West season best with her winning jump of 19' 6.75."
Terry Smoot Jr set a personal best in the men's long jump
and qualified for the BWC with a jump of 22' 7.25." Raymond
Wang set a new personal best in the men's high jump at 6'
6.75." Staton Gibson improved his BWC qualifying mark
in the triple jump with a mark of 48' 01.25."
The women's 4x400m team
of Uchechi Egeonuigwe, Ashley Williams, Brenda Martinez and
Tajma Stephenson won their race in 3:43.76. Their time is
currently the 2nd fastest time in the West Region.
Uchechi Egeonuigwe won
the 400m hurdles race in 60.74.
The Men's 4x100m relay
team of Antoine Murray, Greg Lemon, Andrew Jacobson, and Aaron
Eckels ran a season-best 41.99 to finish third. Edward Giles
ran a personal best in the 800m in 1:51.99 and Ulices Pina
ran his personal best in the 5k in 14:47.65.
