AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Web Site
(June 19, 2007) - Three
members of the UC Riverside women's track and field team,
redshirt freshman Brenda Martinez and true freshmen Allison
Wilder and Jackie Lewis, will be traveling to Indianapolis,
IN this weekend to compete at the Finish Line USA Junior Outdoor
Track & Field Championships and the AT&T USA Outdoor
Track & Field Championships at the IU Michael A. Carroll
Track & Soccer Stadium.
Martinez (Rancho Cucamonga,
CA) will become the first-ever UCR woman to compete at the
US Nationals when she races in the opening round of the 800
on Thursday, June 21 at 4:45 p.m. local time. Martinez qualified
with a time of 2:04.22, which has also qualified her for the
Olympic Trials next year.
Martinez is the first UCR
athlete to reach the championships since Frank Assumma and
Steve Alvarez went in 1982 and 1983.
Running concurrently will
be the Junior Championships, where Lewis will compete in the
long jump and Wilder will compete in the triple jump.
Lewis (Fresno, CA) qualified
for the long jump with a leap of 18' 5.75" (5.91), while
Wilder's (Covina, CA) 39' 9.75" (12.25) effort in the
triple jump earned her the berth.
The Junior Nationals are
open to athletes age 19 and under.
"I am really proud
that we have three women competing at the highest level of
track and field," Head Coach Irv Ray said. "This
shows the direction that the program is heading and will continue
to head as we look forward to the Olympic Trials in 2008.
Lewis, Wilder and Martinez
all qualified at the USA Track and Field Southern California
Championships earlier this month.
