Women Third, Men Fourth in All-Cal Challenge

(Mar 1, 2003) - UC Riverside women's team placed third and the men's team fourth at the All-Cal Challenge in Riverside on Saturday.

Zikarra Beverly finished second in the 100 in 12.37 and Angela Lindsey finished third in 12.48 and second in the 200 at 25.20. Aqueelah Tillman finished second in the 400 in 58.02 and Mary Timm won the 100 hurdles at 14.74. Amy Walton won the triple jump and broke the school record at 11.63m. In throws, Evangela Dixon was second in the shotput with a 14.26m effort and won the discus with a 44.86m mark. Syreeta Waller won the hammer at 56.93m, a school record, and finshed second in the discus at 42.96 while Kristen Thompson was third at 42.30m.

Dixon's efforts in the shotput and hammer were qualifying regional marks as well as Waller in the hammer.

Nate Irvin won the 100 in 10.96 and the 200 in 22.01 and Anthony Oyatayo finished second in the 200 at 22.43. Jeff Midgett won the high jump with a 2.08m effort.

Both the men's and women's tems won the 4x100 in times of 42.54 and 46.94 respectively. The women's 4x400 team (Tillman, Timm, Tiongsen, Campos) set the school record with a time of 3:57.43.

Men Fifth, Women Third at UCI Meet

(March 15, 2003) - The UC Riverside track and field teams competed at the Spring Break Invitational at UC Irvine Saturday. The women finished third out of five teams, while the men finished fourth out of five. Due to heavy rains, only 12 events were completed on the women's side and 11 on the men's side.

In addition, both squads competed in limited events due to the bad weather.

Top finishers for the UCR women were Zikarra Beverly, who finished second in the 100 in 12.85, Aqueelah Tillman, who was second in the 400 in 58.65 and the women's 4x100 relay team which finished first in 47.51. Also, Amy Walton was third in long jump at 15' 8.75" and Kristin Thompson second in the shot put at 39' 5.25"

. Top finishers for the UCR men included Dustin Russell, who finished third in the 800 in 1:59.53, and Carlos Handler, who finished third in the 1,500 in 4:01.55.

Dixon Named Big West Athlete of the Week

(March 26, 2003) - Evangela Dixon was named Big West Track and Field Athlete of the Week for the week of March 17th after she dominated the throwing events at the Ben Brown Invitational in Fullerton the previous Saturday. The junior from Hayward, CA had an outstanding day, placing first in shotput at 48'3.25", second in discus at 151' 2", fifth in hammer at 173' 4".

Women Second, Men Fourth at UCSD

(March 29, 2003) - A bevy of school records fell as the Highlanders competed at the UCSD Spring Break Challenge in San DIego Saturday.

The Highlander men finished in fourth place with 114.5 points. Host UCSD won with 130 points, just beating Cal Poly Pomona (125). The women s competition was a two-horse race, with the host Tritons edging the Highlanders, 214-202.

Mary Timm placed first in the 100 hurdles and set a school record (1:04.17) in the 400 hurdles to lead the women to a second-place finish with 202 points. Melissa Garza set a school record in the 3,000 steeple chase with her time of 12:09.78. UCR also set a school record with a 46.46 time in the 400 relay.

Nate Irvin took first place in the 100 (10.96) and 200 meters (22.08) to lead the men to a fourth-place finish with 114 1/2 points. Irvin also helped UCR take first in the 400 relay (42.00).

Highlanders Break Four School Records, Post 17 Firsts in Home Meet

(April 5, 2003) - The UC Riverside Highlanders recorded a total of 17 firsts in their three way meet with Cal Poly Pomona and Northern Arizona University at the UCR Track Saturday. The Highlander women won their side, while the men finished third.

The biggest surprise of the day came in the women's javelin, as junior Kristin Thompson obliterated the school record with a throw of 140'11". The toss bettered her personal best by 18 feet and broke the school mark by over five and half feet.

Three other school records fell Saturday, as junior Mary Timm recorded a 14.40 in the 100 hurdles, Evangela Dixon set a new mark in the shot put with a toss of 49' 0.25", and Melissa Garza broke her own record in the steeplechase in 12:09.15.

Highlanders Have Busy Weekend at Pomona-Pitzer, Mt. SAC

(April 21, 2003) - The UC Riverside Highlanders competed at the annual Cal/Nevada Meet at San Diego State. The Highlander women finished eighth of 22 teams and the men finished 10th of 23 teams.

Hurdler Mary Timm broke the school record in the 100 hurdles for the second consecutive week, posting a 14.36, good for fourth. Other top performers for the women's team included the 4x100 relay team, which finished third in 46.70, Zikarra Beverly's third blace finish i the long jup at 18'9", and Syreeta Waller's 185'0" effort in the hammer, good for fourth.

On the men's side Nate Irvin posted a third place in the 200 in 21.96 and Jeff Midgett finished second in the high jump with a leap of 6'11".

Highlanders Have Busy Weekend at Pomona-Pitzer, Mt. SAC

(April 21, 2003) - The UC Riverside Highlanders had represent compete at both the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational Meet and the prestigious Mt. San Antonio College meet over the weekend. Both meets drew outstanding competition from across the nation.

At Pomona-Pitzer, Amy Walton impressed in the women's triple jump, posting a 38' 9.75" effort, good for sixth overall. Zikarra Beverly finished 17th in the long jump with a leap of 18'1". Evangela Dixon finished 19th in the women's shot put at 43'6.50 and 23rd in the discus at 143'3". Kristin Thompson continued her improvement in the javelin, finishing 19th at 125'3".

Jeff Midgett finished tied for third in the high jump at 6' 8.75". Donovan Jones was 14th in the steeplechase at 9:44.74. The Highlanders placed three runners in the top-10 of the mixed 10,000 meter run, as Andy Padilla finished third in 32:10.03, Santiago Alonza fifth in 32:13.99 and Noé Romo 10th in 32:36.52.

Syreeta Waller showed that she belonged at the Mt. SAC meet, placing second in the discus at 167'3" and fifth in the hammer at 183'0". Similarly, Evangela Dixon posted a third place finish in the discus at 152'3" and ninth in the shot at 47'9.75".

Carlos Handler finished 8th in the 10,000 in 30:07.16.

The UCR women's 4x100 relay team finished eighth in 46.88 and the men's 4x100 relay team was 14th 42.14.

Highlanders Compete at Triton Invitational

(April 26, 2003) - The UC Riverside Highlanders competed at the UCSD Triton Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

Top finishes for the Highlander women included a victor for the women's 4-x100 relay team, which won in 46.49. Shannon Toliver was third in the high jump at 1.60 meters. Evangela Dixon won the discus at 50.03 meters and Syreeta Waller was third at 49.63 meters. On Friday, Waller was third in the Hammer at 57.85 or 189'9".

For the men, Jonathan Wade was second in the 800 at 1:52.75, the men's 4x400 relay team won in 3:17.64. Jeff Midgett won the high jump at 2.14M. On Friday, Carlos Handler won the 5000 in 14:52.67 and Israel Gonzales was third in 15:12.85

Two Records Fall at Steve Scott Invite

(May 3, 2003) - UC Riverside sophomores Zikarra Beverly and Angela Lindsey set school records at the Steve Scott Invitational at UC Irvine. Beverly broke the long jump record by two inches with her jump of 19 feet, 3/4 inch, good for second overall. Lindsey, broke the Highlanders' record in the 200 meters she'd set last year by 0.11 second with her time of 24.83.

Maribel Campos won section two of the 800 in a time of 2:14.55, Adriana Alvarado was second in section 2 of the 1,500 in 4:43.24.

Jonathan Wade was third in the men's 800 in 1:52.90. THe men's 4x400 relay finished second in 3:18.30. Jeff Midgett finished third in the high jump at 6 feet 6 inches.

Small Crew Competes at Oxy Invite

(May 10, 2003) - A smaller than usual number of members of the UC Riverside track and field team competed at the Oxy Invitational in Eagle Rock Saturday, but the Highlanders still broke a pair of school records and saw one team qualify for NCAA regionals.

Angela Lindsey recorded the top finish of the day, winning her heat and placing third overall in the 100 in 12.15. The mark broke the previous school record of 12.16 owned by teammate Zikarra Beverly.

The women's 4x100 team, consisting of Terri Tiongson, Aqueelah Tillman, Angela Lindsey and Beverly finished second in 46.15, but eclipsed the school record and earned a spot at the NCAA regionals

Tiongson was eighth overall in 12:46 in the 100. Amy Walton also had a third in the triple jump with a 38'8.25" effort.

Kristen Thompson was fourth in the javelin with a 133'0" throw.

Melissa Stoll won her heat in the 800, finishing 18th overall in 2:17.95. Shannon Toliver was eighth in the high jump at 5'1". Beverly was fourth in the long jump at 18' 9.75"

On the men's side, Brandon Jacobs won his heat and was ninth overall in the 100 at 10.92. Michael Hopkins was 41st in the 800 in 1:58.11.

Beverly Takes Long Jump for Highlanders

(May 16, 2003) - Sophomore Zikarra Beverly won the women's long jump at the Big West Championships at CS Northridge Friday.

Beverly leaped 5.93 meters, besting second place Angela Whyte of Idaho who jumped 5.86 meters.

In the throwing events, juniors Syreeta Waller and Evangela Dixon finished third and fourth in the hammer throw. Waller had a 53.72 meter effort while Dixon had a 53.10 throw. Dixon was eighth in the shot put at 13.64 meters.

Several events had preliminary rounds Friday. Among the UCR athletes to qualify for the finals were Beverly in the 100, Angela Lindsey in the 200, Aqueelah Tillman in the 400 - setting a school record in 57.70, Maribel Campos in the 1500. On the men's side, Nate Irvin qualified in the 200 and Jonathan Wade in the 800.

Women Eighth, Men Ninth at Big West Championships

(May 17, 2003) -The UC Riverside Women's Track Team finished in eighth place while the Men's Team finished in ninth place at the Big West Championships at CS Northridge Saturday.

Top finishers for UCR included Angela Lindsey, whofinished fourth in the 200 in 24.41 andthe women's 4x100 relay team pf Terri Tiongson, Aqueelah Tillman, Angela Lindsey and Zikarra Beverly which finished second in 45.70. On the men's side, Nate Irvin was fourth in the 200 in 21.65

Eight Highlanders Take on Best in the West at NCAA Regionals in Palo Alto

(May 26, 2003) - Seven members of the UC Riverside Women's Track and Field team and one member of the UCR Men's Track and Field team will go up against the best athletes in the west at the NCAA West Regional, opening Friday at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA.

Over 800 athletes are expected to participate in events at Stanford's Cobb Track & Angell Field. The NCAA is using regional championship meets to determine qualifiers for the national meet. Regionals are also taking place at George Mason (East), Ohio State (Mideast), and Nebraska (Midwest). The 2003 NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships will be held June 11-14 at the A.G. Spanos Complex on the Sacramento State campus.

Sophomore Zikarra Beverly, the Big West Champion in the long jump two weeks ago, leads a field of seven Highlander women who will compete in the meet. Junior Evangela Dixon will compete in three throwing events, the shotput, hammer and discus. Junior Syreeta Waller will join her in the hammer and the discus. Junior Kristen Thompson will make her NCAA debut in the javelin, having just started the event this season.

Sophomores Terri Tiongson, Aqueelah Tillman and junior Angela Lindsey will compete on the 4x100 relay team along with Beverly.

On the men's side, the sole qualifier is sophomore high jumper Jeff Midgett, who reached the NCAA Championships last season.

Midgett Jumps 7-1, Will Move to Nationals as Highlanders Compete in Regionals

(May 31, 2003) - Sophomore high jumperJeff Midgett cleared 7'1", winning the West Regional and earning a trip to the NCAA Nationals at Sacramento.

Midgett cleared 7-1 on his third try, then nearly cleared 7'2 1/4", just nicking the bar.

Junior Kristin Thompson threw the javelin 117'3" at the NCAA West Regionals in Palo Alto Friday. The throw was the 28th best on the afternoon. The women's 4x100 relay team was disqualified due to a mishandled exchange with the baton.

Also on Friday, Zikarra Beverly finished 13th in the long jump at 17'11" and Evangela Dixon was 12th in the shot put at 47'6.5".

In the hammer on Saturday, Dixon finished 11th at 174'2" and Syreeta Waller was 16th at 171'4". In the discus, Waller was 13th at 157'6" and Dixon was 29th at 140'6".

Midgett Fails to Reach Qualifying Height at NCAA Championships

(June 12, 2003) - Sophomore high jumperJeff Midgett failed to clear the first round height of 6'9" in the qualifying round at the NCAA Championships in Sacramento Thursday.

Midgett had won the West Regional at Stanford two weeks ago, leaping 7'1".
