(June 3, 2004) - UC Riverside
Head Cross Country and Track and Field Coach Irv Ray announced
that four student-athletes, three women and one man, had committed
to join the Highlander program Wednesday.
The Highlanders have signed
hurdler Hassan Rahmaan (Serra HS, Gardena, CA), sprinter Whitney
Leachman (Elsie Allen HS, Santa Rosa, CA), and sprinter Jonelle
Smiley (Serra HS, San Diego, CA) to National Letters of Intent.
In addition, Hesperia native and Sultana HS graduate Shanon
Meyer has announced her intention to transfer from San Diego
State University.
Meyer is a four-time multi-even
junior nationals qualifier who had a strong season at SDSU.
In her freshman campaign in 2003 she competed in 12 different
events, including the 400 hurdles, long jump, triple jump,
pole vault, and javelin as well as the heptathlon. In 2003
she was the USA Junior National Champion in the heptathlon,
finished fourth in the Pan Am Junior Championships in the
heptathlon and 15th in the NCAA meet. She was named the Mountain
West Conference indoor and outdoor Freshman of the Year in
2003.
Smiley is one of the top
sprinters in the San Diego section, with a time of 12.19 in
the 100 and 25.31 in the 200. Ray says she will be “a
major player for the women’s sprint corps and relay
teams.”
Leachman, who will be competing
in the 200 at the California State Meet, will join Smiley
on the sprint squads. Her times of 12.17 in the 100 and 25.15
in the 200 make her one of the top sprinters in the North
Coast Section. “The addition of Whitney will make an
already strong women’s sprint corps that much better
as well as challenging the other sprinters for a spot on both
relays,” Ray said.
Rahmaan is a talented hurdler
who will also be competing at the state meet. He has posted
a time of 14.47 in the 110 hurdles and 38.04 in the 300 IH.
“Hassan will be a major impact hurdler in the seasons
to come and is an immediate potential scorer at the Big West
Championship Meet next season,” Ray said.
(June 25, 2004) - UC Riverside
Head Cross Country and Track and Field Coach Irv Ray announced
that six female student-athletes had committed to join the
Highlander program Friday.

five high school athletes Tajma Stephenson (St. Bernard HS),
Lisa Lopez (Hesperia HS), Maryanne Hanks (Murrieta HS), Kristina
Tudor (Apple Valley Christian HS) and Uchechi “Angel”
Egonuigwe (Mayfair HS) and one junior college transfer, Rose
Serna (Southwestern Junior College).
• Serna, a distance
runner, had personal bests of 17:40 in the 5K, 4:42 in the
1,500 and 2:19 in the 800. “She will be a leader with
her junior college experience and her leadership in the big
meets,” Ray said.
• Stephenson, a sprinter,
has personal bests of 25.5 in the 200, 55.81 in the 400 and
2:16 in the 800. “She has huge upside in the 800 and
potential to be a sub-2:10 runner as a freshman,” Ray
said.
• Lopez, a distance
runner, has personal bests of 57.95 in the 400, and 2:16.27
in the 800. “With the strength program here at UCR she
could also run a sub-2:10 in her freshman year,” Ray
said.
• Hanks, a distance
runner, has personal bests of 2:17 in the 800 and 5:11 in
the 1,600. “ She has what it takes to be a great miler,”
Ray said.
• Tudor, a distance
runner, has personal bests of 2:19 in the 800, 5:18 in the
1,600. “She will be a great addition to the distance
side of the track team and a big plus on the cross country
squad,” Ray said.
• Egonuigwe, a sprinter,
has personal bests of 57.0 in the 400 and 45 in the 300 hurdles.

(Jan. 7, 2005) - UC Riverside
Assistant Track and Field Coach Mark Moyer has announced his
retirement, effective at the end of the 2004-05 school year
in June.
“This year marks my
20th year at UC Riverside, and it has been an outstanding
experience. But I am ready to take a break and to spend some
more time with my wife, Bambi, and children Erin and Hayley,”
Moyer said.
Moyer, a specialist in sprints,
hurdles and relays, joined the Highlander program in 1985
as an interim head track and field coach during former Head
Coach Chris Rinne’s tenure as director of athletics.
When Rinne left the athletic directorship in 1986 and returned
as head track and field coach, Moyer began work in his current
full-time assistant position.
“Mark Moyer has been
a integral part of UCR’s growth and success over the
last 20 years. He has seen UCR track make the transition from
Div-II to Div-I, and has shared his expertise with hundreds
of athletes over that time,”
Head Track and Field Coach
Irv Ray said. “The track and field staff and student-athletes
want to thank Mark for everything he has given UCR and wish
him the very best in the future.”
"Mark Moyer is a Highlander
through and through and he will be missed at UCR," UCR
Athletics Director Stan Morrison said. "His enthusiasm,
consistency and commitment to the institution, and the young
people under his guidance, is outstanding.”
A 1976 graduate from Cal
State Hayward with a degree in physical education, Moyer went
on to earn a master’s degree in education from San Francisco
State in 1983. Moyer began his coaching career at his alma
mater, St. Mary’s College High School in Berkeley, CA
in 1966, and added teaching duties in 1971. During his 19-year
stay he was the head track coach and head football coach.
Moyer left the school in 1985, having coached four California
State Hurdle Champions/All Americans during his career. In
his prep career at St. Mary’s, Moyer played football
and ran track.
Moyer, 56, has had two articles
on offensive football published, appearing in “Scholastic
Coach” and “The Coaching Clinic” magazines.
He is a clinician for the Amateur Athletic Federation/CIF
Coaching Certification Clinics.

(May 24, 2005) -
Highlanders Send Five to Eugene to Compete at NCAA West Regional
Five members of the UC Riverside Track and Field teams will
compete with the best in the west at the NCAA West Regional
Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, OR on Friday May
27 and Saturday May 28. The regional is one of four being
held simultaneously around the country and will feature student-athletes
from Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Washington
and Utah. The top five finishers from each individual event
and top three in each relay will advance to the NCAA Championships
in Sacramento on June 8-11. Another 5-8 athletes per event
that finished sixth, seventh or eighth in their event will
be selected by the NCAA Championship Committee to receive
an at-large bid.
And a Freshman Shall
Lead Them
UCR freshman sprinter Tajma Stephenson (Los Angeles,
CA/St. Bernard HS) became the first female Highlander ever
to reach the NCAA Regionals in her first year of competition
when she recorded a school record 2:08.02 in the 800 at the
Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on April 15. The time was the third
best in the conference this season. In 2001-02, then-freshman
Jeff Midgett (Riverside, CA/La Sierra HS) reached the NCAA
Championships in Baton Rouge, LA, failing to record a height
in the contest. The next year, in 2002-03 the NCAA altered
the postseason by adding a regional round of competition.
That year Midgett won the West Regional at Stanford.
Dixon Gets Her Shot
Senior Evangela Dixon (Hayward, CA/Hayward HS) redshirted
the 2003-04 season to allow her to refine her skills in hopes
of making a splash at the national level. The hard work paid
off as she will make her second career appearance at the Regionals.
In 2002-03 Dixon qualified in the discus, shot and hammer
and finished 11th in the hammer at 174’2” and
29th in the discus at 140’ 6” in the Regional
at Stanford. This season, she has a qualifying mark of 51’
4.5 in the shot, recorded at the Spring Break Collegiate Classic
on March 26, and 183’11” mark in the hammer, recorded
at the Big West Championships on May 13.
Not to Be Overlooked
Junior Erica Cosby (Mission Hills, CA/Cleveland HS)
posted a career-best throw of 178’8” at the Pomona-Pizer
Invitational on April 15, earning her a trip to the regionals.
Her sister Jessica is an All-American thrower at UCLA.
Gibson Overcomes
Injuries to Earn Regional Berth
A pair of hamstring injuries could have but a stop
to sophomore triple jumper Staton Gibson’s season. However,
Gibson (Riverside, CA/Ramona HS) was able to put the injuries
behind him to post a school-record effort of 50’10”
in the triple jump to finish third in the event at the Big
West Championships on May 9. Gibson suffered the first injury
early in the season, then re-aggravated it towards the end
of the season.
Wood Makes NCAA
Regional Debut in Discus
Junior thrower Craig Wood (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Alta
Loma CA) will compete for UCR in the discus. His season-best
mark of 172’ was recorded on April 25 at UCSD.
(May 27, 2005) - Three UC
Riverside Highlanders competed at the first day of the NCAA
West Regional Track and Field Championships Friday in Eugene,
Oregon.
Junior Erica Cosby barely
missed qualifying for the national championships in the hammer
throw, surpassing her career-high with a mammoth throw of
180 feet, one inch. That was good enough for tenth place,
with the top nine automatically qualifying.
