Athletes Earn Academic All-Big West Honors
(June 3, 2002) - Six UC Riverside track and field athletes
earned Academic All-Big West Conference honors, as announced
by the conference on Monday.
To be eligible for the All-Academic team, student-athletes
have to maintain a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, have
attained a sophomore standing academically and competed in
at least 50 percent of their teamĘs contests. The following
track and field athletes were honored: Israel Gonzales (So.,
Chino, CA), Josh Gonzales (So., Chino, CA), Nate Irvin (So.,
Riverside, CA), Noe Romo (Jr., Perris, CA), Adeline Ramirez
(Sr., Redlands, CA), and Brigette Watkins (Sr., Carson, CA).
Midgett Struggles at NCAA Championships
(June 2, 2002) - UC Riverside freshman high jumper Jeff Midgett
(Riverside, CA/La Sierra HS) struggled in his first-ever appearance
at the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in
Baton Rouge, LA on Saturday, failing to clear the minimum
height of 2.10 meters or 6'10.75".
The event was won by Princeton's Tora Harris, the No. 4 high
jumper in the world, who cleared 7' 4.5".
Midgett to Jump in NCAA Championships Saturday at 5:30 PST
(June 1, 2002) - UC Riverside freshman high jumper Jeff Midgett
(Riverside, CA/La Sierra HS) will make his debut at the 2002
NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 29-June 1 in
Baton Rouge, LA on Saturday at 5:30 PM, PST.

Midgett is the second individual to reach a NCAA Division
I Championship event since the Highlanders' move to Division
I last Fall. Brandon Hillpot, a freshman golfer was the first
when he competed last weekend in the 2002 NCAA West Regional.
There will be 19 athletes competing in the high jump and Midgett
ranks 16th at 2.19 meters (7'2.25") with his jump at the Claremont
Classic Track Meet at Claremont-Mudd Scripps Colleges. The
jump also broke the school record 7'0.25".
Midgett won the high jump competition at the Fresno State
meet with a jump of 6' 10.75" and won both university open
high jump events at the Mount San Antonio College Relays,
clearing 7 feet for the first two times in his career. He
won the high jump with a 6'6.25" effort at the UCSD Invitational
and won the high jumps at the Riverside Track Classic and
at the Long Beach Classic with leaps of 6'8".
The championships will be held May 29-June 1 at Bernie Moore
Stadium in Baton Rouge, LA with Louisiana State University
serving as host. A total of 776 participants will compete
in the championships. Student-athletes qualified for the championships
by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established
for each event.
The weather forecast for Baton Rouge is partly cloudy with
highs in the 90's. There is a chance of thunderstorms later
in the evening.
Highlander Men Eighth, Women Ninth at Big West Track and Field
Championships
(May 18, 2002) - The UC Riverside men's and women's track
and field finished eighth and ninth, respectively, in their
first ever appearances at the Big West Track and Field Championships
at UC Irvine.
The men amassed a total of 19 points, while the women recorded
23. Utah State took the title for the men, while Cal State
Northridge won the women's side.
Jonathon Wade was second in the 800 in 1:51.46, David Wheat
was fifth in 400 hurdles in 53.14, EJ Andrews finished seventh
in the 100 in 48.81. The men's 4x100 relay team was seventh
in 41.68, while the 4x400 was seventh in 3:14.48.
Zikarra Beverly was fifth in the 100 in 12.25 and seventh
in the 200 in 25.04.
Syreeta Waller finished sixth in the shot put with a throw
of 45'7", with Evangela Dixon right behind at 43'11.25". Waller
fouled all three attempts in her top event, the hammer.
Highlander Men, Women Eighth
at Big West Track and Field Championships
(May 17, 2002) - The UC Riverside men's and women's track
and field teams both stand in eighth place after the first
day of the Big West Track and Field Championships at UC Irvine.
Freshman Jeff Midgett, who suffered a slightly sprained ankle
last week, finished second in the high jump with a 6' 10.75".
Matt Gomez was sixth in the discus with a throw of 160'7".
Syreeta Waller finished second in the discus with a 157'2"
effort, while teamate Evangela Dixon was fourth with a throw
of 147'9".
In preliminary action, EJ Andrews reached the finals in the
400 with a preliminary time of 48.09.
Jonathan Wade reached the finals of the 800 with a preliminary
time of 1:53.27. David Wheat was fourth in the prelims of
the 400 hurdles in 53.45
On the women's side, Zikarra Beverly ran 12:.16 in the 100
to advance to the finals. Beverly and teammate Angela Lindsey
also qualified for the finals in the 200, running 24.99 and
24.93, respectively.
Mary Timm will compete in the 100 hurdle finals, qualifying
sixth in 14.84.
Midgett Named Athlete of the
Week
(May 16, 2002) - Freshman Jeff Midgett was named Big West
Track Athlete of the Week by the Conference Office Wednesday.
Midgett, a freshman from Riverside, CA, set a new school record
in the High Jump and became the Big West leader with a jump
of 7 feet 2 and 1/4 inches. He is currently ranked 13th on
the NCAA Division I list.
Midgett Smashes Seven-Foot Barrier as Highlanders Compete
at Claremont Classic
(May 11, 2002) - Freshman high jumper Jeff Midgett smashed
the UCR school record and gained an NCAA provisional mark
with a leap of 7'2.25" at the Claremont Classic Track Meet
at Claremont-Mudd Scripps Colleges.
Midgett's effort was good for third place in the meet and
bested the previous meet record of 7'1" set in 1973 by Ron
Owens of USC.
A small squad participated in the late afternoon meet. Other
top finishers for the Highlanders were Zikarra Beverly, who
won the 200 in 24.97, Evangela Dixon, who was third in the
discus with a throw of 156'2", and Syreeta Waller, who was
fourth in the shot put at 45'11.75".
Nate Irvin was second in the 100 in 10.70. The men's 4x400
relay won in 3:15.76
Israel and Josh Gonzalez Recognized
as 2002 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars by Black Issues in
Higher Education
(May 9, 2002) - UC Riverside sophomore cross country and track
& field athlete Israel Gonzalez has been named to the 2002
Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars second team for track and
field by Black Issues in Higher Education while his brother,
Josh, was named to the third team.
The Gonzalez twins are natives of Chino, CA. Israel has a
3.68 overall GPA in business while Josh has a 3.29 GPA in
business. Israel was honored by the Big West Conference as
the male scholar-athlete of the year in March.

April 11 issue of the magazine.
Wade, Timm Named Big West
Athletes of the Week
(May 5, 2002) - UC Riverside's Jonathan Wade and Mary Timm
were selected as the Big West Conference Track and Field Male
and Female Athletes of the Week for the week of May 1st.
Wade, a sophomore from Los Angeles, CA placed first in the
800 meters with a time of 1:52.7 at the Fresno State 4+1 Meet.
Timm, a freshman from Hesperia, CA had a career-best in the
100 hurdles and 400 hurdles. In the 100, she had a time of
14.45 and 60.04 in the 400.
Highlanders Compete at Steve Scott Invitational
(May 5, 2002) - The UC Riverside track and field team participated
in the Steve Scott Invitational at UC Irvine on Sunday.
The 1600 relay team of David Wheat, Jonathan Wade, Brandon
Jacobs, and EJ Andrews took first place with a time of 3:14:19.
Syreeta Waller was second in the discus with a 154-9 effort
and fifth in the hammer with a 175-11 effort. Evangela Dixon
was fifth in the discus at 146-9". Kristen Thompson was third
in the shotput at 43-9 1/4 and Waller was fourth at 43-9.
Jason Swigart finished second in the 5000m with a time of
15:08.48 and Jeff Midgett finished third in the high jump
at 6-11 3/4.
Mary Timm finished third in the 100 hurdles with a time of
14.75 and Cikarra Beverly was fifth in the long jum with a
distance of 17-11.
Wade also finished fourth in the 800m with a time of 1:51.35
and the 400m relay team (Wheat, Andrews, Jacobs, Irvin) finished
fourth with a time of 42.35.
Men, Women Third at Fresno State
(April 27, 2002) - UC Riverside's men's team finished third
of five and the women third of four in the Fresno State 4+1
Meet Saturday.
Jeff Midgett won the high jump with a leap of 6' 10.75", better
than six inches higher than his nearest competitor. Jayson
Swigart finished first in the steeplechase with a time of
9:32.5, while Jacob Wagoner came in third in 9:45.69. EJ Andrews
won the 400 dash in 48.2 and Jonathan Wade won the 800 in
1:52.7.
The Highlanders had a first and third finish in the 5000 as
Carlos Handler won in 15:08.7, while Israel Gonzales finished
third in 15:31.4.
The Highlanders swept the 400 hurdles as Mary Timm won the
in 1:04.0 and David Wheat won in 53.8.
Syreeta Waller was third in the hammer with a 170'6" effort.
Evangela Dixon was third in the shot at 45'8" and third in
the discus at 151'11".
Maribel Campos was second in the 1500 in a season best time
of 4:44.5. Mary Timm was third in the 100 hurdles in 14.45.
Aqueelah Tillman was third in the 400 in 56.6. Zikarra Beverly
was third in 100 in 12.34.
Kelsey Wright and Melissa Garza finished second and third,
respectively, in the women's stepplechase. Wright finiished
in 12:35.0 while Garza finished in 12:52.2.
Both relay teams posted second place finishes in the 4x400
relay, the women finishing in 3:58.4 and the men in 3:17.5.
Midgett Wins Both High Jump Events at Mt. SAC
(April 22, 2002) - UC Riverside's Jeff Midgett won both university
open high jump events at the Mount San Antonio College Relays
in Walnut over the weekend, clearing 7 feet for the first
two times in his career.
On Saturday, Midgett, a freshman, won the event for jumpers
who had never reached 7 feet and earned an invitation to Sunday's
top-level university division event, which he also won. Midgett's
previous best was 6-11 1/2.
At the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Friday, the Highlanders
set school records in three events: Zikarra Beverly of San
Diego in the 100 meters (12 seconds), Angela Lindsey of Moreno
Valley Canyon Springs in the 200 meters (24.82) and the all-freshman
relay team of Teri Lou Tiongsen, Mary Timm, Beverly and Lindsey
in the 400-meter relay (46.67).
Freshman Carlos Handler set a meet record of 31:26.98 in the
10,000 meters, in his first appearance in the event.
Men Third, Women Fourth at
UCSD Invitational
(4/14/02) The UC Riverside Highlanders men's team finished
third and the women fourth at the UCSD Invitational Saturday.
The women had 10 first place finishes and broke four UCR records
and the men registered five victories.
Zikarra Beverly had a pair of wins, taking the 100 in 12.32
and the long jump with a leap of 17'4.75". Mary Timm won both
hurdle events, taking the 100 in 14.89 and the 400 in a school
record time of 1:04.87. Syreeta Waller won the hammer (171'9")
and discus (162'5") and finished second in the shot (44'8.25).
Angela Lindsey won the 200 in a school record 25.12, while
the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams recorded school record times
of 47.03 and 3:57.80, respectively.
On the men's side, the Highlanders' relay teams won both their
events, taking the 4x100 in 42.27 and the 4x400 in 3:17.26.
EJ Andrews won the 400 in 48.57 and David Wheat won the 400
hurdles in 54.18. Jeff Midgett won the high jump with a 6'6.25"
effort.
Waller, Highlanders Do Well
at Riverside Track Classic
(4/5/02) Sophomore thrower Syreeta Waller won three events
and three Highlanders had two wins each at the Riverside Classic
Track and Field Meet Saturday.
Waller won the shotput with a heave of 13.45, the discus at
49.82 and the hammer at 52.36.
Mary Timm took both hurdle events, winning the 100 in 14.71
and the 400 in 1:05.15. Maribel Campos won her two distance
events, taking the 800 in 2:18.39 and the 1500 in 4:55.78.
Zikarra Beverly was first in 100 in 12.35 and first in long
jump at 5.26.
The Highlanders pulled off a sweep in the 5000, taking the
top four positions. Jayson Swigart was first in 15:16.17,
Carlos Handler second in in 15:16.23, Ryan Allen third in
15:38.62, Israel Gonzales fourth in 15:41.06.
Freshman Jeff Midgett won the high jump at 6'8", but failed
in his regulation attempt at 7'.5". However, after missing
his third official attempt, he cleared the height for the
first time in his career on his second "unofficial" attempt.

Invite
The UC Riverside men's track and field team posted a sixth
place finish and the women finished 14th at the Cal/Nevada
Invite at Fresno State University Saturday. The men had 37
points in the meet, while the women posted 16. Teams from
throughout the west, including UCLA, Cal State Northridge
and UCSB, are competing in the meet.
Top five finishers for the Highlanders were Jeff Midgett,
who was third in the high jump at 2.05m, Nate Irvine, who
was fourth in the 100 meter dash in 10.80, EJ Andrews who
was fourth in the 400 meter dash in 48.53, Jayson Swigart,
who was fifth in the steeplechase in 9:34.15, the men's 4x400
relay team, which was fifth in 3:17.15 and the women's 4x100
relay team, which was fifth in 47.15.
Midgett Wins High Jump at
LBSU
Freshman high jumper Jeff Midgett won his event at the Long
Beach Classic at Jack Rose Track in Long Beach, CA. Midgett
leaped 6'8" to earn first place honors, the only UCR athlete
to win on the afternoon.
Highlanders Compete at All-Cal Cup
The Highlanders' Nate Irvin won in the 100 in a time of 10.98
and was second in the long jump at 22'9.25". EJ Andrews won
the 400 in 48.89 and was second in the 200 in 22.24. Jonathan
Wade was second in the 800 in 1:54.56. Matt Gomez set a school
record in the discus with an effort of 160'4", good for third
place, and Doug Murr was second in the Javelin with an throw
of 172'11".
For the Women, Angie Lindsey was second in the 200 in 25.73
and thrid in the 100 in 12.49. Mary Timm was second in the
100 meter hurdles in 15.17 and third in the 400 low hurdles
at 67.99. Syreeta Waller was second in the hammer at 170'11",
second in the discus at 148'7", and third in the shot put
at 45'2.5". Evangela Dixon was second in the shot at 46'5.5".

Face the Best at MPSF Championships
(Feb. 23, 2002) - The UC Riverside men's and women's track
and field teams struggled against the top competition in the
country at the MPSF Championships at the University of Arizona.
Both Highlanders squads finished last in their fields while
facing the likes of Arizona, UCLA, ASU, Oregon, and Washington
State.
Men 1st, Women 6th at Holiday Classic in Nevada
(Feb. 16, 2002) - The UC Riverside men's team finished first
among 11 teams and the women sixth among 13 teams at the Holiday
Inn Classic in Reno, NV.
Highlights for the Highlanders included:
Syreeta Waller was second and Evangela Dixon fourth in the
"women's weight throw." Waller's effort was 55'10.25" and
Dixon 52' 9.50".
Jonathan Wade won the 800 meters in 1:56.45. The UCR 4x400
relay team won in 3:25.52. Jeff Midgett won the high jump
with a leap of 6'11". EJ Andrews was second in the 400 meters
in 49.98.

Indoor Scoring Meet in Idaho
(Feb. 9, 2002) - The UC Riverside men's team posted an 0-3
mark and the women's squad an 0-4 mark in dual meet scoring
at the McDonald's Scoring Meet in Idaho Saturday.
Evangela Dixon and Syreeta Waller finished first and second
in the shot put. Dixon's winning heave was 14.50m (47'07.00)
and Waller's second place effort was 13.45m (44'01.50).
UCR's Jonathan Wade won the 800 meters in a time of 1:54.44
and Jeff Midgett won the high jump with a leap of 6' 8.75".
Chris Ruckle won the triple jump with a 45'06.25" effort.

Signs La Sierra HS High Jumper Jeff Midgett
(June 20, 2001) -The UC Riverside men's track and field team
moved to improve in the high jump with the signing of La Sierra
High School senior jumper Jeff Midgett to a National Letter
of Intent.
Midgett, a 6-4, 175 pound Riverside native, has jumped 6'8"
and was the Mountain View League Champion as a junior and
a senior. He finished second at the CIF Master's Meet as a
junior in 2000 and advanced to the CIF Southern Section Finals
as a senior.
"Jeff is one of the top high jump prospects in the state,"
UCR Head Coach Chris Rinne said. "He will have an immediate
impact in the Big West Conference and we anticipate that he
will be the next school record holder."
The current UCR record in the high jump is 7' 1/4".
UC Riverside Track and Field Signs Two Canyon Springs HS Teammates
to National Letters of Intent
(June 1, 2001) -The UC Riverside women's track and field team
announced the signings of Canyon Springs High School teammates
Angela Lindsey and Denisha Shaw to National Letters of Intent.
Lindsey is a specialist in the 100 and 200 sprints, while
Shaw has excelled in the 400 at the Moreno Valley area high
school.
"They have both been key figures for Canyon Springs' very
successful relay teams," UCR Assistant Coach Mark Moyer said.
"We are very excited about these two young ladies being in
our program. They will have an immediate impact on the success
of our women's sprint corps and relay teams."

Signs Three Women to National Letters of Intent
(May 18, 2001) - The UC Riverside women's track and field
team announced that three premier runners had signed National
Letters of Intent to join the Highlanders. Coming to UCR in
the fall are sprinter Zikarra Beverly from University of San
Diego HS, sprinter/hurdler Brandi Gates of El Cerrito HS,
and hurdler Mary Timm of Sultana High School.
Beverly has a career best time of 12.21 in the 100 meters
and 24.70 in the 200. She is considered one of the top sprinters
in the San Diego area and in all of California.
"Zikarra gives our women's sprint corps the type of talent
that is necessary to compete at the Division I level," UCR
Sprint/Hurdle Coach Mark Moyer said. "She will help raise
the performance of all our other sprinters. I am very pleased
and excited about having Zikarra in our program."
Beverly has been competing in track and field for just two
years, coming to the sport in her junior year of high school
after having played softball.
Gates, from El Cerrito, in Northern California, recorded a
12.10 in the 100 meters and will run both sprints and hurdles
for UCR.
"Brandi will make her presence felt immediately with her speed
in the short sprints and relays," Moyer said. "She also has
a background in hurdles, which with her speed could become
a super event for her and our program." Timm, of Sultana High
School in Hesperia, CA, has run a 14.84 in the high hurdles
and a 45.43 in the intermediate hurdles.
"Mary is going to have a major impact on our team," Moyer
said. "She would be competitive in the Big West Conference
right now as a senior in high school."
Highlanders Finish Season
at Occidental with Three Wins
The UC Riverside Track and Field teams wrapped up the 2001
campaign Saturday with a strong showing at the Occidental
Invitational in Los Angeles, winning a trio of events at the
meet which featured outstanding collegiate and club athletes.
For the women, Maribel Campos won the 1,500 meters in 4:45.65.
Aqueelah Tillman was sixth in the 200 meters in 25.96. Amy
Kedzior won the 400 hurdles in 1:05.08, Kristin Thompson was
fifth in the women's discus with a throw of 111'11". Evangela
Dixon was second in the shot at 41'9.75", followed by Syreeta
Waller in fifth at 40'7.50" and Kristin Thompson at 40'0.5".
Waller was 10th in the hammer at 141'10" and seventh in the
discus at 128'7". Dixon was fourth in the discus at 140'9".
Derek Kurkowski won the shot put with a throw of 52' 7.5"
and was fourth in the men's discus with a 149'02" effort.
E.J. Andrews was fifth in the 400 meters in 48.27, a strong
showing in a field that featured acclaimed sprinter Tyree
Washington. Nate Irvin was ninth in the long jump with a leap
of 21'5.5". Chris Ruckel was sixth in the triple jump at 46'8".
Highlanders Compete at Cal/Nevada Championships
UC Riverside found itself going up against the top track and
field athletes in the West on Saturday and Sunday at the Cal/Nevada
Championships iat UC Irvine.
In the final day of the two-day meet, the Highlander men finished
15th overall, while the women were 25th.
EJ Andrews was the top male finisher for UCR, placing fourth
in the 400 meter dash in a career-best time of 47.86.
