Daniel Lindstrom Checks In From Mammoth Mountain
(September 16, 2008) - "We’re finally here in Mammoth, ready for some intense altitude training. These next four weeks will be hard and strenuous, but worth it because the training and the stress free environment will ultimately help us for this upcoming season. We are now preparing for a championship run at the Big West Conference meet and for a chance to run in the NCAA National Championship race for the first time in school history. We have the talent and ability to do so, but it is going to take a whole team effort. It all starts here in Mammoth."

UCR Announces 2008-09 Track & Field Recruiting Class
(July 7, 2008) - UC Riverside Track & Field Coach Irv Ray announced today the signing of 18 track and field recruits that will make up the recruiting class for 2008-09. “This is our finest recruiting class in our 5 years of building this Division I program,” said Ray. “(Assistant coaches) Browne and Basler have done an outstanding job in recruiting an excellent class of student athletes who will represent UCR with excellence in both the class room and on the track.”

Missed It By THAT Much
(June 28, 2008) - UCR's Brenda Martinez (second from right) fell just short in her bid to advance to the Finals of the 800m at the U.S. Olympic Trials on Saturday finishing sixth in her heat and 10th overall with a time of 2:05.10. The top four runners from each heat advanced to the Finals.

Brenda was interviewed by www.runnerspace.com following her First Round race.

City of Riverside Honors Women's Track & Field Team
(June 18, 2008) - The City of Riverside honored the UCR Women's Track & Field team on Tuesday, June 17 at its weekly council meeting in recognition of the team's second place finish this season in the Big West Conference. The city also recognized Brenda Martinez for her appearance in the NCAA Finals last weekend and her upcoming appearance at the US Olympic Trials. Andy Melendrez, councilmember for Ward 2, presented Martinez and the team with certificates commemorating their achievements.

Martinez Comes Up Short In NCAA Bid
(June 14, 2008) - Brenda Martinez's bid to become the Highlanders' first NCAA Champion during the Division I era came up short Saturday afternoon at the Women's Track & Field Championship in Des Moines, Iowa. Through the first two laps, Martinez was as high as fourth and well within striking distance of the leaders. However, a handful of runners pulled away from the pack and Florida State's Hannah England passed Texas Tech's Sally Kipyego on the final lap to win the event with a meet record time of 4:06.19. Martinez finished in 14th place with a time of 4:24.99.

Martinez joins Jeff Midgett (high jump - 2002, 2003) and Evangela Dixon (shot put - 2005) as the only Highlanders athletes to compete in the NCAA Track & Field Championship since the university made the move to Division I.

Brenda Martinez In NCAA Finals On CBS Saturday (2:12pm PDT)
(June 12, 2008) - UC Riverside sophomore Brenda Martinez finished third in her preliminary heat in the 1500m Thursday afternoon with a time of 4:17.91, advancing to Saturday's NCAA Finals in the event which begin at 2:12 p.m. PDT. CBS will provide TV coverage of the NCAAs from 1 - 3 p.m.

Brenda Martinez Readies For NCAAs
(June 10, 2008) - UC Riverside sophomore Brenda Martinez traveled to Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa on Monday as she prepares for the NCAA Women's Division I Track & Field Championship (June 11-14) where she will compete in the 1500m. Martinez becomes just the third Highlanders athlete to compete in the NCAA Track & Field Championship since the team made the move to Division I joining Jeff Midgett (high jump - 2002, 2003) and Evangela Dixon (shot put - 2005).

Four Highlanders Named All-Region
(June 3, 2008) - The UC Riverside Women's Track & Field team placed four athletes on the All-Region team following last weekend's NCAA West Regional at Cal State Northridge - Brenda Martinez (1500m), Lisa Lopez (1500m), Melissa Genisauski (Discus) and Allison Wilder (Triple Jump). To be considered All-Region the student-athlete must place in the top eight of his/her respective event, and that student-athlete’s institution must be a current paid member of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Martinez Advances To NCAAs
(May 31, 2008) - Brenda Martinez broke the UC Riverside school record in the 1500m (4:17.09) at the NCAA Regional on Saturday, May 31, and in the process earned a trip to the NCAAs, June 11-14. She joins Jeff Midgett (high jump - 2002, 2003) and Evangela Dixon (shot put - 2005) as the only Highlanders to compete in the NCAAs since the university moved to Division I

Martinez Named UC Riverside Female Athlete of the Year
(May 28, 2008) - Sophomore cross country and track and field athlete Brenda Martinez was honored as the UCR Female Athlete of the Year Award after finishing fourth in the conference at the 2007 Big West Cross Country Championships and finishing first in the 800m and 1500m races at the Big West Track & Field Championships. Martinez qualified for this weekend's NCAA Regionals in the 800m, the 1500m and the 5000m, and is ranked 12th in the nation in the 800m.

UCR Names Evans Co-Harper Scholar Athlete of the Year
(May 28, 2008) - Co-winners were named for the 2007-08 Harper Scholar Athlete Award, given each year to a student-athlete whose athletic and scholarly achievements are deemed most outstanding, as Erynne Oki (women's tennis) and Danielle Evans (track and field) shared the honors. Oki, a junior business administration major from Valley Village, CA, was named to the All-Big West First Team in Singles and Second Team in doubles. Her 31 combined wins this season set a UCR school record. Evans, a junior economics major from Pomona, CA, finished third at the Big West Track & Field Championships in the 800m. She will represent UCR in the NCAA Regionals this weekend.

Track & Field Prepares For NCAA Regionals
(May 26, 2008) - Following the Big West Championships on May 16 and 17, 13 Highlanders track and field athletes boasted marks that qualified them to participate in NCAA Regionals scheduled for May 30, 31 at Cal State Northridge. It is by far the largest contingent of athletes that UCR has ever sent to Regionals and comes on the heels of the women's team's second place finish in the Big West - the highest track and field conference finish ever for the Highlanders.

Women Take Second at Big West Championships
(May 17, 2008) - The UC Riverside Women's Track & Field team finished in second place at the big West Championships this weekend – the highest finish in UCR's history with the conference. As she has done all year long, Brenda Martinez paved the way with a win in the 1500m, and she led a quintet of Highlanders who took the one through five slots in the 800m.

Elvin Tabah Qualifies For Regionals In High Jump
(May 10, 2008) - Junior high jumper Elvin Tabah qualified for Regionals in the event on Saturday with a personal best jump of 6' 10 3/4" (2.10m) at the OXY Invitational. That mark is the third highest jump in the Big West this season.

Melissa Genisauski Qualifies For Regionals With Hammer Throw Of 178' 2"
(May 4, 2008) - UCR senior Melissa Genisauski qualified for Regionals in the hammer throw over the weekend at the UC Irvine Asics/Steve Scot Invitational with a throw of 178' 2" – a full nine feet better than her previous best. The Big West Championships are scheduled for May 16 and 17 in Northridge, CA.

Leachman Breaks Women's 200m Record at UC San Diego
(April 28, 2008) - Whitney Leachman ran the 200m in 24.24 at UC San Diego's Triton Invitational on Saturday, April 26, breaking the school record in the event. She also finished seventh out of 36 runners in the women's 100m with a time of 11.92.

Women's 1600 Sprint Medley Team Breaks School Record At Drake Relays
(April 26, 2008) - The UC Riverside Women's 1600 Sprint Medley Team of Molly Russell, Jackie Lewis, TreAna Hundley and Danielle Evens broke the school record in the event Saturday morning at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa with a time of 3:58.76, finishing fifth overall.

Women's Distance Medley Finishes Second At Drake Relays
(April 25, 2008) - The UC Riverside Women's Distance Medley Relay Team of Lisa Lopez, Tajma Stephenson, Ashley Williams and Brenda Martinez finished in second place Friday afternoon at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa with a time of 11:32.29. Baylor University grabbed the top spot, with the Highlanders besting 11 other teams including those from Minnesota and Kansas State, which finished first and third in last year's event.

Track and Field Athletes Flourish At Mt. SAC Relays
(April 20, 2008) - The UC Riverside Men's and Women's Track and Field teams competed in the Mt. SAC Relays from April 17-20, with several athletes breaking school records and qualifying for NCAA Regionals in the process. Sophomore Brenda Martinez won the 800m (2:05.71) on Friday and on Sunday finished sixth in the 1500m while breaking the school record and bettering her NCAA Regional Qualifying Mark with a time of 4:19.53.

Women Take Top Three 800m Spots at Mt. SAC Relays
(April 18, 2008) - UC Riverside took the top three spots in the women's 800m at the 50th running of the Mt. SAC Relays on Friday as sophomore Brenda Martinez (2:05.71), volunteer assistant coach Sara Hall (2:05.86) and senior Lisa Lopez (2:08.01) beat out 23 other competitors from UCLA, Notre Dame, BYU and other top schools.

(April 13, 2008) - UC Riverside's Allison Wilder's triple jump of 39', 7.75" gave her a second place finish over the weekend as athletes from around the country descended on Los Angeles to compete in the UCLA Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational.

Women's Track and Field Ranked No. 42 In The Nation
(April 10, 2008) - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) released its first Division I Outdoor Rankings for the 2008 Track & Field Season, and the Highlanders Women's Track & Field team currently ranks No. 42 in the nation.

Andrew Basler Named Assistant Track Coach at UCR
(August 21, 2007) -Former Central Michigan University assistant woman's track coach Andrew Basler has been named assistant track coach at the University of California Riverside, Head Coach Irv Ray announced. Basler will coach the sprints, hurdles and multi-events for the Highlanders.

Freshman Allison Wilder Places Eighth in Triple Jump
(June 22, 2007) - Freshman Allison Wilder's 39' 8" effort in the triple jump was good enough for an eighth place finish at the Finish Line USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships Friday. On Thursday, freshmen Brenda Martinez and Jackie Lewis each failed to meet the qualifying standard and move on in their events, as Martinez finished 23rd in the AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships 800 meters and Lewis placed15th in the long jump at the Junior Outdoor Championships, held concurrently at the IU Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium in Indianapolis, IN.

(June 19, 2007) - Three members of the UC Riverside women's track and field team, redshirt freshman Brenda Martinez and true freshmen Allison Wilder and Jackie Lewis, will be traveling to Indianapolis, IN this weekend to compete at the Finish Line USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships and the AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the IU Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium.
