Highlanders Lose Season Opening Matches to Iowa and Northern Colorado

(Aug. 31, 2007) - The UC Riverside Highlanders women's volleyball team lost both ends of their season-opening doubleheader at the University of Northern Colorado Tournament in Greeley, Colorado, Friday. UCR fell to the University of Iowa, 3-1 (26-30, 30-20, 30-28, 30-24), then lost to the hosts 3-0 (30-28, 30-25, 30-27).

In the opener, senior middle blocker Angie Mitchell had 11 kills to lead the squad. UCR won the first game, 30-26, but Iowa came back to win games two, three and four. In the second game, the Highlanders trailed just 15-14, but the Hawkeyes finished on a 15-6 run to win the game. Game three was a similar result, as the teams were tied at 18-18 before the Hawkeyes scored six straight to make it 24-18. UCR clawed back into the match and rallied to tie the game at 28-28, but Iowa finished with the final two points to take the game. The Hawkeyes cruised in game four, leading at one point 20-10 before settling for the 30-24 win.

Sophomore setter Brittney Murrey had 26 assists for UCR, which hit .054 (41-33-148) in the match. The Hawkeyes hit .188 (62-31-165).

In the second match, the Highlanders got 14 kills by sophomore Dominique Cowling and eight from Mitchell, but fell in three games. The Highlanders were in each game right to the wire, but could not get the points they needed to take the victory.

The tournament continues Saturday.
