(Sept. 1, 2007) - The UC Riverside Highlanders split their two matches at the University of Northern Colorado tournament on Saturday. The Highlanders lost to Florida Gulf Coast University, 3-1 (30-28, 30-17, 18-30, 30-16), but bounced back to take their final match with a convincing win over St. Francis University, 3-0 (30-19, 30-23, 30-25).

UCR improved to 1-3 on the season.

In the nightcap, sophomore outside hitter Dominique Cowling had a match-high 13 kills, hitting .440 on the match. Sophomore middle Kelley Quinn added 11 kills and hit .526 overall. The Highlanders hit .421 in the match and had just nine errors total (49-9-95). They also had 12 block assists. Freshman Kelly Simpson had an outstanding match with six kills and no errors in 11 attacks.

The Highlanders had a tough challenge in the morning, playing the morning game after having played the final game of the day Friday. Doubling the challenge was the fact that the Highlanders were going up against one of the top teams from the southeast in Florida Gulf Coast University, which had a 29-3 record in 2006.

UCR led early in game one, at one point going up 20-10. However, FGCU went on an 11-1 run to tie the match at 21-21. The teams battled tooth and nail and UCR led 29-28, but FGCU scored the final three points of the game to rally to a 31-29 win.

FGCU won game two, but the Highlanders roared back in game three for a 30-18 win. However, the pendulum swung back the other direction as FGCU took the match with a 30-16 win.

Cowling led all players with 20 kills, hitting .293 in the match, but she was the only Highlander in double figures. FGCU hit .430 overall. Murrey had 21 assists for the Highlanders.

Following the tournament, Murrey was named to the all-tournament team.
