Game three saw the Black Knights come back from an early 10-7 deficit as they outscored UCR 7-1 to take the lead at 14-11. The Highlanders would tie the match at 15-15, but Army got another mini-rally to build the lead to back to five at 23-18. Army rolled off six straight behind the serve of Lazzari to make it 29-21, but the Highlanders got three straight aces by junior Kelly Fink to cut the margin to 29-24. However, her next serve was long, giving Army the 2-1 lead.

UCR bounced back in game four to post a 30-22 win, using a mid-game 12-4 run to lead them to the match-tying win. Game five saw Army take an early lead, then hold off a late Highlander run to pull out a 15-11 win and take the match.

In the opener against Idaho State, junior outside hitter Amy Read had 17 kills and 21 digs, freshman hitter Simpson had 13 kills and senior middle Angie Mitchell added 12, but the Highlanders could not overcome a plethora of errors in games three, four and five and the Bengals roared back to post the come-from-behind win.
