Score vs. Idaho State
Box Score vs. Army
(Sept. 8, 2007) - The host
UC Riverside Highlanders lost a pair of five-game matches
Saturday at the UC Riverside Tournament at the Physical Education
Gym in Riverside. The Highlanders fell to Idaho State in the
morning game, 3-2 (26-30, 23-30, 30-26, 30-18, 15-12), then
lost to Army in the finale, 3-2 (18-30, 31-29, 30-24, 22-30,
15-11).
The Black Knights' Jamie
Clark, Elizabeth Lazzari and Briana Stremick each had 15 kills
as Army beat the Highlanders in a see-saw battle. UCR sophomore
hitter Dominique Cowling had a career-high 21 kills and freshman
hitter Kelly Simpson added 16 in a losing effort.
The Highlanders took game
one, 30-18, outscoring the Black Knights 10-2 down the stretch.
But Army came back in game two, leading by as many as seven
at 18-11 before the the Highlanders rallied back to shave
the margin to one at 25-24, then tying the match at 26-26.
The teams traded points until 29-29, but the Black Knights
closed out the game with kills by Jamie Clark to win 31-29
and tie the match.
Game three saw the Black
Knights come back from an early 10-7 deficit as they outscored
UCR 7-1 to take the lead at 14-11. The Highlanders would tie
the match at 15-15, but Army got another mini-rally to build
the lead to back to five at 23-18. Army rolled off six straight
behind the serve of Lazzari to make it 29-21, but the Highlanders
got three straight aces by junior Kelly Fink to cut the margin
to 29-24. However, her next serve was long, giving Army the
2-1 lead.
UCR bounced back in game
four to post a 30-22 win, using a mid-game 12-4 run to lead
them to the match-tying win. Game five saw Army take an early
lead, then hold off a late Highlander run to pull out a 15-11
win and take the match.
In the opener against Idaho
State, junior outside hitter Amy Read had 17 kills and 21
digs, freshman hitter Simpson had 13 kills and senior middle
Angie Mitchell added 12, but the Highlanders could not overcome
a plethora of errors in games three, four and five and the
Bengals roared back to post the come-from-behind win.
ISU's Charlie Kinghorn had
a match-high 18 kills.
In game one, UCR used a
strong block - five total - to post a 30-26 win. The Highlanders
had six blocks in game two as they recorded a 30-23 win. The
Highlanders held the Bengals to .038 hitting in the first
game and .017 hitting in game two.
But the momentum switched
in game three as the Bengals adjusted their attack. The Highlanders
recorded just two blocks, had five receiving errors, two ball
handling errors and two service errors, losing the game 30-26
despite outhitting ISU, .333 to .211. ISU continued the run
in game four, cruising to an easy 30-18 win as the Highlanders
continued to struggle with five receiving errors and four
ball handling errors.
UCR trailed 8-3, 10-4 and
13-7 in the finale, but rallied back to cut the score to 14-12,
but the Bengals took it.
UCR hit .218 (68-26-193)
in the match, compared to ISU's .109 (56-34-201). But the
errors added up for UCR, which had 11 service errors, 14 receiving
errors and eight ball handling errors in the match.
In the other match, Robert
Morris posted a 3-2 (24-30, 31-29, 22-30, 30-21, 15-11) come-from-behind
win over Idaho State. Robert Morris' Amanda Graham had a match-high
17 kills and hit .351 in the match.
Robert Morris finished the
tournament at 2-1 and was declared champion over Army (2-1)
by virtue of their winning the head-to-head meeting Friday.
Following the tournament, the All-Tournament team as selected
by the coaches was announced. The team was:

The Highlanders return to
action next week at the Lamar Tournament, facing Texas Southern,
Jackson State, Chattanooga and host Lamar on September 14
