Score vs. UC Irvine
(Sept.
20, 2007) - The host UC Irvine Anteaters posted a 30-21, 30-21,
25-30, 30-27 win over the visiting UC Riverside Highlanders
in the Big West opener for both teams at Crawford Hall in
Irvine Thursday.
The Anteaters improved to
11-3 overall and 1-0 in the Big West, while the Highlanders
fell to 4-8. 0-1.
Sophomore hitter Dominque
Cowling led the Highlanders with 11 kills, but hit -.045 with
13 errors in 44 attempts. Junior Kelly Fink had eight kills
off of the bench for UCR. The Highlanders hit .132 (48-26-167)
on the match. Setter Brittney Murrey totaled 31 assists and
11 digs.
For UC Irvine, freshman
Kari Pestolesi had a match high 18 kills, hitting .326 (18-4-43).
Outside hitter Lauren Kellerman totaled her fifth double-double
of the season with 17 kills and 12 digs. The Anteaters hit
.282 (72-24-170).
UCR trailed 22-20 in game
one before the Anteaters finished on a 8-1 run for the win.
In game two, the Anteaters jumped out to a big lead early
before cruising to a 30-21 win. In game three, the Highlanders
jumped out to an early lead before the Anteaters cut the margin
to one at 21-20. But the Highlanders never surrendered the
lead and outscored UCI the rest o f the way, 9-5 for a 30-25
win. Game four was nip and tuck as the teams were tied at
14-14, but a 6-1 run gave them a 20-15 advantage. UCR got
back to within two at 28-26, but the Anteaters prevailed,
30-27.
The Highlanders will face
Long Beach State on September 28 at the Pyramid.
