Score vs. UC Davis
(Oct.
5, 2007) - The UC Riverside Highlanders earned their first
Big West Conference win since the 2005 season, posting a come-from-behind
3-1 (28-30, 30-21, 31-29, 30-24) win over the visiting UC
Davis Aggies in a Big West match at the Student Recreation
Center in Riverside Friday.
The
Highlanders improved to 5-10 overall and 1-3 in the Big West.
The Aggies are now 3-13, 0-5.
Senior
middle hitter Angie Mitchell led all players with a career-high-tying
18 kills, hitting a robust .429 (18-3-35) in the match. She
was the only Highlander to record double-figure kills, as
the Highlanders hit .126 (53-32-167) as a team. Sophomore
middle Angela Pizzella had a match- and season-high 11 blocks
- all assists -, as the Highlanders combined for a season-high
23.5 blocks. The Aggies hit .025 (54-49-198) as a team, led
by Kayla Varney's 13 kills. While four Aggies had double-figure
kills, three of them also had double-figure errors.
Pizzella's 11 blocks tied
for the second-highest single match total in the history of
the program and is also tied for fifth in total blocks.
UCR's 23.5 blocks set a
new Division I mark for total blocks in four games. Their
37 assisted blocks set an all-time school record for blocks
in a four-game match.
Game one was a neck-and-neck
battle with 13 ties and five lead changes, with the last tie
coming at 28-28. Davis earned the final two points of the
game on a Highlander error and a kill by Varney for a 30-28
win.
The Highlanders came back
in game two to post a solid 30-21 win. The Highlanders led
by two at the halfway point, 15-13, then outscored the Aggies
15-8 down the stretch to take the game. The Highlanders hit
.300 in the game, making just three errors (12-3-30). Mitchell
accounted for nine of the Highlanders' kills.
In game three, the Highlanders
trailed for the bulk of the match, but rallied back to turn
a 27-24 deficit into a 28-27 lead. The teams traded points
to 29-29, the Highlanders took a 30-29 lead on an error by
Varney. UCR took the game, 31-29, following another attack
error by the Aggies. The Aggies had 11 attack errors in the
game, with seven errors accounting for the Highlanders' final
seven points of the game.
Game four was again close
at the mid-point, with UCR taking a 15-14 lead at the halfway
point. UCR led 22-20, then used a 5-2 run to put the game
away. The Highlanders finished the match with kills by junior
hitter Amy Read and a final match-ender by Mitchell.
The win was the first conference
victory for UCR since November 11, 2005, when they defeated
UC Irvine.
The Highlanders host Pacific
on Saturday, Oct. 6th at the Student Recreation Center at
7:00 p.m.
