8, 2007) - UC Riverside’s Angie Mitchell and UC Irvine’s
Kari Pestolesi earned Big West Co-Player of the Week accolades
after leading their respective teams to impressive victories
last week. This is the first weekly honor for both student-athletes.
Mitchell guided the Highlanders to a 1-1 week as UC Riverside
won its first Big West Conference match since Nov. 12, 2005.
Guided by Mitchell’s .429 hitting percentage and nine
total blocks, UCR downed UC Davis, 3-1, Friday evening. The
following night the Highlanders fell to Pacific 3-0, but the
middle still managed to put up impressive numbers, firing
a .357 clip and collecting five more blocks. For the week,
the Palmdale, Calif., native recorded a .397 hitting percentage
and averaged 4.4 kills and 1.71 blocks per game.
Mitchell is hitting a team-best
.333 (183-50-399), fifth best in the conference, and is averaging
1.28 blocks per game, fourth best in the conference, with
a team-high 78. She is averaging 3.98 points per game. Overall,
Mitchell leads the team in kills with 183, total attacks with
399, aces with 14, solo blocks with 13, block assists with
65 and total blocks with 78.
