Score vs. CS Fullerton
(Oct.
12, 2007) - The UC Riverside Highlanders took the host Cal
State Fullerton Titans to five games, but fell short as the
Titans prevailed 3-2 (30-22, 28-30, 27-30, 30-21, 15-11) in
a Big West Conference game at Titan Gym Friday.
The Highlanders fell to 5-12
overall and 1-5 in the Big West. The Titans are now 9-9, 4-3.
Four Highlanders recorded
double-figure kills, led by sophomore outside hitter Dominique
Cowling's 16 kills. Junior hitter Kelly Fink had 14, while
senior middle Angie Mitchell had 12 and junior hitter Amy
Read had 10. Mitchell also had 11 blocks for UCR, including
three solos. The Highlanders hit .101 (58-36-217) on the match.
Sophomore setter Brittany Murrey had 49 assists and junior
libero Kim McNeal added 20 digs.
Titan hitter Brittany Moore
had 30 kills in the win, hitting .321 (30-4-81). As a team,
they hit .226 (78-29-217).
In game one, the Titans
broke open a 15-15 game to outscore UCR 15-7 down the stretch
for a 30-22 win. The Highlanders posted a late rally in game
two, coming back from a four-point deficit at 23-19 to tie
the game at 24-24. Trailing 28-27, the Highlanders tied it
on a service error, then got kills by Fink and Read to post
a 30-28 win and tie the match.
Game three saw the Highlanders
lead early, but the Titans bounce back to take a narrow 22-20
lead late. But UCR again rallied to tie. With the score tied
26-26, UCR scored four of the final five points for a 30-27
win. With their backs against the wall, the Titans posted
a solid 30-21 win in game four, sending it to a fifth game.
In the fifth, the Highlanders
led 11-10, but Moore took over, recording four kills to account
for four of the Titans five points in a 5-0 run to give Fullerton
the game at 15-11 and the match.
The Highlanders host UC
Santa Barbara on October 13 at 7:00 p.m. at the Student Recreation
Center.
