Highlanders Fall to Santa Barbara, 3-1

(Oct. 13, 2007) -The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos handed the host UC Riverside Highlanders a 3-1 loss (30-24, 30-25, 25-30, 30-19 ) in a Big West contest in front of 238 fans at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside Saturday.

The Highlanders fell to 5-13 overall and 1-6 in the Big West. The Gauchos are 7-12, 2-5.

UCR had four players in double figures in kills, led by junior hitter Kelly Fink's 15. Senior middle Angie Mitchell had 13 kills and junior hitter Amy Read added 12 while sophomore hitter Amy read had 11. Sophomore setter Brittney Murrey had 56 assists. UCR hit .217 (67-26-189) on the match.

The Gauchos' Lauren McLaughlin led all players with 22 kills. The Gauchos hit .293 (71-18-181) in the match.

In game one, the Highlanders overcame an early 13-9 Gaucho lead to tie the match at 17-17. UCR took a 23-20 lead, but the Gauchos outscored the Highlanders 10-1 down the stretch to post a 30-24 lead.

The Gauchos kept the momentum going in game two, jumping out to a 10-1 lead. The Highlanders battled back to cut the margin to four at 27-23, but could get no closer, succumbing 30-25 to give the Gauchos a 2-0 lead.

UCR and the Gauchos battled to a 19-19 tie before the Highlanders scored three straight, keyed by a huge block by Mitchell and Murrey. The block made it 21-19 and seemed to spur the Highlanders on as they built the margin to five at 28-23. The teams traded points before Amy Read wrapped up the 30-25 win with a kill.

But the Gauchos collected themselves in game four and built up a big lead, pulling away for a 30-19 win.

UCR returns to action on Saturday, October 20th as they host UC Irvine at the Student Recreation Center at 7:00 p.m.
