Highlanders Fall to CS Northridge

(Oct. 26, 2007) - The Cal State Northridge Matadors posted a 3-0 (30-20, 30-27, 30-28) win over the host UC Riverside Highlanders in a Big West match in front of 167 fans at the Physical Education Gymnasium in Riverside Friday.

UCR fell to 5-15 overall and 1-8 in the Big West, while the Matadors improved to 9-14, 6-5.

Senior middle Angie Mitchell led the Highlanders with 11 kills, hitting .304 on the night. Junior right side Raquel Salinas had a perfect night with six kills in 11 attempts for a .545 clip, while junior hitter Kelly Quinn also had a perfect night with seven kills in 10 attempts. Sophomore setter Brittney Murrey had 33 assists. UCR hit .176 as a team (41-20-119). Three Matadors led the way with 10 kills each, Alex Johnson, Val Kepler and Brittany Williams.

The Highlanders struggled in game one, amassing just seven kills and hitting .000 as CSN pulled out a 30-20 win. The Matadors hit just .186 in the game, but it was enough. The Highlanders trailed by one at 13-12. but the Matadors built the margin to five at 18-13. UCR cot back to within three at 23-20, but the Matadors scored the last seven points of the game.

In game two, the teams were tied at 25-25, but the Matadors took advantage of three Highlander hitting errors to post a 30-27 win. UCR improved its hitting with a .333 clip in the game.

In game three, the Highlanders roared back from a late 28-24 deficit to cut the lead to 28-27. But the Matadors held on for the 30-28 win.

UCR returns to action on Saturday, October 27th as they host Long Beach State at the Physical Education Gym at 7:00 p.m.
