Score vs. Cal Poly
(Nov.
10, 2007) – The UC Riverside Highlanders closed out
their 2007 home season with a strong effort, but came up short
against No. 22 Cal Poly, 22-30, 30-22, 30-23, 30-23 in a Big
West match in front of 143 fans at the Student Recreation
Center in Riverside Saturday.
The Highlanders fell to
6-19, 2-12, while the conference leading Mustangs improved
to 19-7, 13-1.
Sophomore hitter Dominique
Cowling had a team-high 16 kills and hit .191 on the match.
Junior right side Raquel Salinas had 11 kills and the Highlanders
had mine kills. Junior libero Kim McNeal had 22 digs for the
Highlanders while sophomore setter Brittney Murrey had 45
assists. Overall the Highlanders hit .126 (54-33-167), but
played one of their best matches of the season.
Kylie Atherstone had a match-high
23 kills and hit .326 and Ali Waller had 16 kills. The Mustangs
hit .181 (63-30-182). The Mustangs had 12.5 blocks.
The Highlanders took game
one 30-22 behind seven kills by Cowling and a dozen hitting
errors by the Mustangs, who hit just .039 (14-12-51) in the
match to the Highlanders' .184 (14-7-38).
Game two saw the Mustangs
break open a 14-14 game with a 5-1 run to make it 19-15. Cal
Poly gradually pulled away from there, posting a 30-22 win.
Game three started off similarly as the teams were tied at
14-14. This time the Mustangs used a 4-1 rally to open up
a 17-16 lead into a 21-17 advantage. The Highlanders got back
to within three at 23-20, but the Mustangs closed out the
game on a 7-3 run for a 30-23 final.
Game four was tighter down
the stretch, but the Mustangs were able to curtail the errors
that had hurt them earlier in the match and used some big
swings to take the match with a 30-23 win.
The Highlanders will face
Cal Poly again on Friday, Nov. 16 in San Luis Obispo before
concluding the regular season on Nov. 17 at UC Santa Barbara.
