Highlanders Fall to #19 Cal Poly, 3-1

Box Score vs. Cal Poly

(Nov. 16, 2007) –UC Riverside dropped the match with #19 Cal Poly three games to one (15-30, 17-30, 32-30, 24-30) in San Luis Obispo Friday night. The Highlander’s fell to (6-20 Overall, 2-13 Big West) and the win gave the Mustangs (20-7 Overall, 14-1 Big West) the Big West Conference regular season crown.

Freshman Kelly Simpson led UCR with 11 kills and sophomore Kelley Quinn hit a team-high .400 while producing seven kills. Senior Angie Mitchell and junior Amy Read each added eight kills on the night for the Highlanders. Junior libero Kimberly McNeal had a team-high 17 digs and sophomore Brittney Murrey added 10 digs and lofted 33 sets in the match.

UCR took a very tightly contested game three, 32-30, as both teams exchanged leads 16 times throughout the game. The largest lead came at the 15-12 mark and was held by the Highlanders. UCR eventually went up 30-29, but Cal Poly took the next point to even it at 30. Simpson earned the kill on the following play to give the Highlanders a 31-30 advantage, which was then followed by Quinn producing the game-winner on the next point.

Game four was a battle as well, the Highlanders opened up a 10-3and later opened upan eight-point lead at 19-11. The Mustangs looking to clinch the title on their home floor and continued to pressure the Highlanders. Cal Poly did just that, turning up the intensity to close out the game on a 19-5 run to pick up the victory and clinch the Conference title.

The Highlanders hit .146 (47-27-137) on a night that the Mustangs were playing for something more than just another notch in the win column. Ali Waller finished with a game-high 21 kills as three Mustangs finished the match with double digits in kills. Kristin Jackson produced a game-high 22 digs for Cal Poly who hit .252 (68-28-159) in the four games.

UCR closes out their season tomorrow night against UC Santa Barbara at 7:00 p.m. up in Santa Barbara.
