Burmaster
Named To All-Freshman Team
(November 27, 2001) - The 2001 Big West Women's Volleyball
All-Freshman Team was announced on Monday, and freshman Shannon
Burmaster was named to the team. Burmaster was the only Highlander
to be recognized, as there was nobody named to the all-conference
team.
Burmaster was the only Highlander to play in every game. She
averaged 2.33 k/g on .179 hitting and 2.06 d/g.
UCR finished 10-17 in their first official year in Division
I and 3-15 in the Big West .
Highlanders Finish Season
With Win Over Fullerton, 3-1
(November 17, 2001) - The UC Riverside Highlanders finished
their season on a high note by defeating Cal State Fullerton
30-23, 34-32, 28-30, 30-22 at the Student Recreation Center
in Riverside, CA. With the win, the Highlanders improved to
10-17 overall and 3-15 in the Big West Conference while Fullerton
dropped to 8-18 overall and 4-14 in conference.
In game four, the Highlanders took a 13-11 lead but the Titans
scored seven straight points to go up 18-13. Katie DeRoos
ended the run with a kill and Riverside carried the momentum,
winning 14 straight points to go up 27-18, including three
service aces by DeRoos. Riverside and Fullerton traded points
the rest of the way until the Highlanders finished off the
match 30-22, on block assists by Pam Hartman and Amy Sperry
on an attempt by Katie Crawford.
The first three games were a tale of opening leads and comeback
victories. Fullerton turned the tide on the Highlanders in
game three as UCR came out with a big 11-3 lead but the Titans
came storming back to tie the game at 28-28. Fullerton scored
the final two points on an error by Shannon Burmaster and
block assists by Roxanne Barlow and Katie Crawford on an attack
by Rosanna Parizek.
Games one and two saw the Titans take leads with the Highlanders
coming back to win both games. In game two, the Titans took
the early lead at 4-1 but the Highlanders made a run to go
up 17-11. Fullerton would not give up at evened the games
at 26 all. The teams traded points back and forth and the
score was still tied at 32, until Riverside scored the final
two points on kills by Burmaster and DeRoos to win 34-32.
The opening game was a sign of things to come as the Titans
jumped out to a 5-0 lead but the Highlanders eventually caught
them and took their first lead at 17-16. UCR took their biggest
lead at 27-20 and traded points with Fullerton until DeRoos
ended the game with a kill for a 30-23 win.
DeRoos led the Highlanders with 14 kills, seven digs, and
a career-high six service aces. Burmaster added 15 kills and
15 digs while Pam Hartman had 12 kills and 20 digs.
Roxanne Barlow led the Titans with 16 kills and six digs.
Kim Levey had 40 assists and 20 digs.
Highlanders Win Thriller Over
Cal Poly, 3-2
(November 10, 2001) - The UC Riverside Highlanders ended their
12 match-losing streak in dramatic fashion by pulling the
upset over Cal Poly in five games, 30-26, 20-30, 25-30, 30-28,
21-19 at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside, CA. With
the win, the Highlanders improved to 9-17 overall and 2-15
in the Big West Conference while Cal Poly dropped to 15-8
overall and 9-7 in conference.
UCR jumped out to a 7-4 lead in game five and held on to the
lead until Cal Poly caught them at 12-12. The Highlanders
took the lead back at 13-12 but the Mustangs scored two straight
points to take their first lead of the fifth game. Riverside
and Cal Poly traded the next several points until the score
was 19-18 in favor of Cal Poly. The Highlanders would not
give up and won the last three points, finishing with two
kills by Pam Hartman for the win 21-19.
In game four, the Highlanders took a 7-3 lead but the Mustangs
fought back to 17-17. Riverside followed with a run of 7-0
but Cal Poly came back again to get within one at 29-28 but
the Highlanders won the game on a kill by Tiffany Brooks.
Cal Poly took early control of games two and three and looked
as though game one was a hiccup. The Mustangs started with
quick leads and coasted to take a 2-1 lead, winning 30-20
and 30-25.
UCR gained control of game one with a 5-0 lead but Cal Poly
kept chipping away at the lead to get within two at 27-25.
The Highlanders and Mustangs traded points with UCR holding
on for the 30-26 win.
Pam Hartman led the Highlanders with a double-double of 20
kills and 13 digs. Katie DeRoos added 20 kills and eight digs.
Shannon Burmaster also had a double-double with 19 kills and
15 digs. Tiffany Brooks had 67 assists and 15 digs.
Lien Worthy led the Mustangs with 25 kills and 12 total blocks
and Jessica Diepersloot added 15 kills and 15 digs.
Highlanders
Swept By UCSB
(November 9, 2001) - The UC Riverside Highlanders lost to
UC Santa Barbara 30-18, 30-18, 30-23, on Friday night at the
Student Recreation Center in Riverside, CA. With the loss,
UC Riverside dropped to 8-17 overall and 1-15 in the Big West
and Santa Barbara improved to 14-11 overall and 12-3 in the
Big West.
In game three, the score was tied at 7-7 but the Gauchos scored
three straight points to gain control of the game. The Highlanders
made a run to get back to 15-14 by scoring three points of
their own. Riverside could not get any closer and Santa Barbara
pulled away to clinch the victory 30-23.
The Gauchos made an early run in game two, jumping out to
a 16-5 lead. The Highlanders tried to make a run by scoring
four straight points to go from 28-14 to 28-18 but it was
not enough as UCSB took the final two points to take the game
30-18.
In game one, UCR was up 4-3 early but UCSB scored four straight
to go up 7-4. The Highlanders tried to make a run by scoring
four consecutive points, three kills by Katie DeRoos, to get
within four points at 19-15. However, the Gauchos never lost
control and they scored the final four points of the game,
making it 30-18.
Katie DeRoos led the Highlanders with a game-high 14 kills.
Shannon Burmaster added eight kills and four digs.
Niki Carroll led the Gauchos with 13 kills. Courtney Guerra
and Brie Lampe added nine kills each. Danielle Bauer had seven
block assists.
Utah State Defeats UCR, 3-0
(November 3, 2001) - The UC Riverside Highlanders lost to
Utah State 30-13, 30-13, 30-21, on Saturday night at the Spectrum
in Logan, Utah. With the loss, UC Riverside dropped to 8-16
overall and 1-14 in the Big West Conference and Utah State
improved to 13-7 overall and 9-3 in the Big West.
The Highlanders were up 11-7 in game one, but the Aggies scored
15 straight points and 23 of 25 to win 30-13. Utah State held
UCR to -.067 hitting.
Momentum carried over into the final two games as the Aggies
raced out to early leads and coasted to the win. Utah State
hit .279 overall to .000 for UCR. The Aggies also led in blocks
12-3.
Junior Pam Hartman led the Highlanders with seven kills and
seven digs. Shannon Burmaster added six kills and 10 digs.
Erin Cartwright led the Aggies with 13 kills on .600 hitting
and seven digs. Lisa Borom added 12 kills on .414 hitting.
Highlanders Fall To Idaho, 3-0
(November 1, 2001) - The UC Riverside Highlanders lost to
the University of Idaho 30-22, 30-17, 30-28, on Thursday night
at Memorial Gym in Moscow, Idaho. With the loss, UC Riverside
dropped to 8-15 overall and 1-13 in the Big West Conference
and Idaho improved to 8-13 overall and 3-8 in the Big West.
In game three, the Highlanders played the Vandals tough. UCR
was up 28-27 but UI won the last three points.
The score was tied 12-12 in game two but the Vandals went
on a big run to take a 29-16 lead. UI ended the game two plays
later after exchanging sideouts with the Highlanders.
In game one, the Vandals rattled off a 15-5 run, breaking
an early 4-4 tie. UI took the game 30-22.
Junior Pam Hartman led the Highlanders with 13 kills and 10
digs. Sophomore Katie DeRoos added nine kills and six digs
while Amy Sperry had six blocks.
Heather Kniss led the Vandals with 17 kills and nine digs.
Laura McCaffrey added 11 kills and 11 digs.
#1 Long Beach State Defeats UCR
(October 27, 2001) - The UC Riverside Highlanders lost to
Long Beach State 30-19, 30-13, 30-22, on Saturday night at
the Student Recreation Center in Riverside, CA. With the loss,
UC Riverside dropped to 8-14 overall and 1-12 in the Big West
Conference and Long Beach improved to 18-0 overall and 11-0
in the Big West.
In game three, the Highlanders played the 49ers tough after
being down 23-14. Riverside scored five straight points to
make it 23-19, however Long Beach took the final game 30-22.
The Highlanders could not muster a run as the 49ers defeated
UCR 30-13. Cheryl Weaver led the way in game two with nine
kills.
In game one, the 49ers jumped out to a 25-9 lead before the
Highlanders made a game of it. UCR fought to 27-16 but Long
Beach finished them off, 30-19.
Weaver led the 49ers with 17 kills and two block assists.
Tayyiba Haneef added 12 kills and three block assists.
Sophomore Katie DeRoos led the Highlanders with eight kills
and seven digs. Pam Hartman added seven kills and three digs.
Highlanders Lose Tough Match To UCI, 3-2
(October 26, 2001) - The UC Riverside Highlanders lost to
UC Irvine 25-30, 30-26, 30-28, 27-30, 15-11 on Friday night
at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside, CA. With the
loss, UC Riverside dropped to 8-13 overall and 1-11 in the
Big West and Irvine improved to 3-15 overall and 1-9 in the
Big West.
The Highlanders and Anteaters battled back and forth all night
but in the end UCI had one more run than UCR. In game five,
the teams fought back and forth with neither team getting
more than a two-point lead until Irvine took a three point
advantage at 13-10. UCR scored the next point on a kill by
Shannon Burmaster but the Anteaters responded with the final
two points, making it 15-11.
The Highlanders forced a game five after being tied 26-26
in game four. UCR scored three straight before UCI answered
with a kill by Ashley Hain. Riverside scored the final point
on a kill by Burmaster, taking game four 30-27.
The Anteaters took games two and three by scores of 30-26
and 30-28. Game three was tied 27-27 before UCI scored three
of the last four points. In game two, the score was 26-25
but once again Irvine went on a 4-1 run to take the game.
UC Riverside opened game one in strong fashion, jumping out
to a 4-0 lead. UC Irvine caught them at 8-8 but the Highlanders
pulled out to a 27-19 lead. The Anteaters fought back to 27-23,
however UCR hung on to win 30-25 to take game one.
The Highlanders had five players with double digit kills.
Junior Pam Hartman led the way with 20 kills and 15 digs.
Katie DeRoos added 17 kills and 15 digs. Setter Tiffany Brooks
had 60 assists and 19 digs.
Chanda McLeod led the way for the Anteaters with 24 kills
and 20 digs. Kelly Wing added 19 kills and 14 assists. Ashley
Hain had 55 assists and 17 digs.
UCI hit .254 while UCR hit .199. The Anteaters also out-blocked
the Highlanders 14-8.
Highlanders Swept By Northridge
(October 20, 2001) - Cal State Northridge swept the season
series UC Riverside Highlanders with a 30-27, 30-22, 30-28
win on Saturday at The Matadome. With the loss, UC Riverside
dropped to 8-12 overall and 1-10 in the Big West and Cal State
Northridge improved to 11-9 overall and 5-6 in the Big West.
The match started out with both teams siding out until Northridge
led 10-9 in the opening game. Northridge engineered an 8-to-1
run but the Highlanders battled back to tie the opening set
at 27-27 on a kill by Hartman. Walter gave Northridge a 28-27
lead on a kill for the side out. Then Matador setter Nadine
Nickel served up an ace on Deroos to give the Matadors game
point. Walter got a transition kill from a dig by Hammerich,
giving Northridge the first game 30-27.
The Highlanders jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the second game
due to three Northridge miscues and two kills by UCR's Shannon
Burmaster. UCR still led at 12-9, but Northridge would score
the next five points to take a 14-12 lead on another kill
by Walter. The Matadors only led 21-20 before going on a 9-2
run to close out the second game 30-22.
Cal State Northridge scored the first three points of the
third game off of two UCR mistakes and a kill by Walter. But
the Highlanders would fight back and take their biggest lead
of the match with a 19-14 advantage in game three. UC Riverside
still held the lead at 24-22, until Northridge scored four
straight points, ending with a service ace by Hammerich to
give the Matadors a 26-24 lead. Both teams exchanged side
outs for the rest of the game, which ended 30-28 on a block
by Liz Naegle and Aere .
Freshman Jessika Hammerich led the Matadors with 12 digs,
10 kills and three blocks. Junior outside hitter Erica Aere
recorded a match-high 14 kills and added four digs and a season-high
six total blocks. UC Riverside was led by Pam Hartman, who
was the only Highlander to reach double figures in kills with
10 on the night. Hartman also added eight digs and two blocks.
UCR setter Tiffany Brooks was the lone Highlander to record
a double-double with 36 assists and 10 digs.
Highlanders Lose to UOP in Three
(October 18, 2001) - UC Riverside (8-11, 1-9) dropped a 3-0
decision to the University of the Pacific (16-5, 7-2) in Stockton
Thursday.
Pacific started strong, jumping out to an 18-9 lead in the
first game and never looked back as it won 30-23 to go up
1-0. In the second game, the Tigers jumped out to a 21-14
lead and then closed it off by scoring nine of the final 11
points. Pacific ran out to a 19-7 lead in the third game and
went on to capture the third and final game 30-15.
Pacific out hit UC Riverside .351 to .076 on the night, including
holding the Highlanders to .000 hitting percentage over the
last two games. The Tigers also out aced UC Riverside 11 to
2 on the night.
Katie DeRoos led the way for UC Riverside with 10 kills, eight
digs and three block solos. Setter Tiffany Brooks had 20 assists
and 10 digs on the night for the Highlanders.
Highlanders Fall To #24 Santa Barbara In Three
(October 13, 2001) - The UC Riverside Highlanders dropped
a Big West Conference match to UC Santa Barbara 30-14, 30-10,
30-15 on Saturday night at the Thunderdome in Santa Barbara,
CA.
The Highlanders (8-10,1-8) got as close as 8-6 in game one
but the Gauchos (8-7, 6-1) went on a 14-2 streak to break
things open. Santa Barbara hit .398, the best against the
Highlanders all season. UCR hit -.037, their worst hitting
percentage of the year.
Sophomore Katie DeRoos led the Highlanders with eight kills,
five digs and two block solos.
Erica Menzel led the Gauchos with 11 kills and nine digs.
Danielle Bauer added nine kills and nine digs.
Mustangs Defeat Highlanders, 3-0
(October 12, 2001) - The UC Riverside Highlanders dropped
a Big West Conference match to Cal Poly 35-33, 30-20, 30-12
on Friday night at the Mott Gymnasium in San Luis Obispo,
CA.
The Highlanders (8-9,1-7) hit .000 for the match while the
Mustangs (10-5,4-4) hit .325. UCR had 34 kills and 34 errors
on the night.
Sophomore Katie DeRoos led the Highlanders with nine kills
and seven digs. Junior Pam Hartman added seven kills and seven
digs.
Lien Worthy led the hitting attack with a .611 hitting percentage
and 13 kills. Kristen O'Halloran added 14 kills and eight
digs.
Vandals Defeat Highlanders
in Three
(October 6, 2001) - The UC Riverside Highlanders dropped a
Big West Conference match to the University of Idaho 30-25,
31-29, 30-22 on Saturday night at the Student Recreation Center
in Riverside, CA.
The Highlanders (8-8, 1-6) and Vandals (5-8, 1-4) went back
and forth all evening but in the end the Vandals were too
much for the Highlanders. Idaho took a close game three at
25-22 and scored the last five points to end the match on
a kill by sophomore Ann Hammond.
In game two, UCR held a 21-14 advantage but the Vandals stormed
back to take a 26-22 lead. The Highlanders would not quit,
tying the game at 29-29. However, Idaho closed out the game
scoring the last two points on kills by Jenny Neville and
Brooke Haeberle.
In game one, UCR pulled in front by scoring five straight
points to go up 12-6, but Idaho came back with a run of five
straight to make it 12-11. The score was tied 25-25 until
the Vandals scored the final five points of the game.
Sophomore Allison Donald led the Highlanders with nine kills
and six total blocks. Sophomore Rosanna Parizek added eight
kills.
Hammond led the way for the Vandals with 14 kills and five
block assists. Sarah Meek had 10 kills and six block assists.
Highlanders Swept By Utah
State
(October 5, 2001) - The UC Riverside Highlanders lost to Utah
State University 30-18, 30-19, 32-30 on Friday night in a
Big West Conference match at the Student Recreation Center
in Riverside, CA.
In game three, the Highlanders (8-7, 1-5) jumped out to a
7-3 lead, however the Aggies (6-4, 3-1) battled back to take
a 21-16 lead on a kill by Michelle Matheson. UCR battled back
to tie the game at 22 apiece on a kill by Allison Donald.
The score was tied at 30-30 until the Aggies scored the final
two points on kills by Lisa Borom and Matheson.
In game two, the Aggies scored four straight points to take
the lead from 9-7 to 13-7. The Highlanders fought back to
17-13 but were unable to get any closer as Utah State scored
the final four points to take the game, 30-19.
The Aggies used another run in game one to take control by
scoring six straight points to bring their lead to 23-12.
They finished off the game on a receiving error by Katie DeRoos.
Donald led the Highlanders with 11 kills and two block assists.
DeRoos added seven kills and nine digs.
Highlanders Fall To CSF in Four Games
(October 2, 2001) - The UC Riverside Highlanders fell to Cal
State Fullerton 30-28, 30-27, 28-30, 30-15 on Tuesday night
in a Big West Conference match at Titan Gym in Fullerton,
CA.
The match was evenly played until game four when the Titans
(6-5, 2-2) had .485 hitting percentage to .107 for the Highlanders.
Sophomore Rosanna Parizek led the Highlanders (8-6, 1-4) with
15 kills and five blocks. Freshman Shannon Burmaster added
14 kills and 10 digs for her first double-double of the season.
Freshman Tiffany Brooks had 49 assists and seven digs.
UCR Notches First Big West
Win Over UCI
(September 29, 2001) The UC Riverside Highlanders won their
first Big West match over UC Irvine 30-27, 30-23, 20-30, 30-25
on Saturday night at Crawford Hall in Irvine, CA.
Sophomore Katie DeRoos led the Highlanders with 14 kills and
seven digs. Junior Pam Hartman and sophomore Rosanna Parizek
added 13 kills apiece. Freshman Tiffany Brooks had career-highs
with 52 assists and 20 digs.
UCR improves to 8-5 overall and 1-3 in the Big West, while
UCI drops to 1-9 and 0-4 in conference.
Highlanders Swept By #2 Long Beach State
(September 28, 2001) - The UC Riverside Highlanders lost to
Long Beach State, the number two ranked team in the nation
by USA Today, 30-14, 30-5, 30-23 on Friday night at the Pyramid
in Long Beach, CA.
The Highlanders (7-5, 0-3 BWC) hit a negative .030 while the
49ers (9-0, 3-0 BWC) hit .433. Elisha Thomas and Brittany
Hochevar led the 49ers with 10 kills each.
Sophomore Katie DeRoos led the Highlanders with 10 kills.
Freshman Tiffany Brooks added 13 assists.
UCR Falls To Pacific in Three Games
(September 22, 2001) - The UC Riverside Highlanders dropped
their third consecutive match in a Big West contest against
University of the Pacific 30-23, 30-24, 30-25 on Saturday
night at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside, CA.
The Highlanders (7-4, 0-2) played the #7 Tigers (10-2, 2-0)
close, making them work hard for a three game win. In game
three, Pacific had a 29-21 advantage, but the Highlanders
closed the gap by scoring four consecutive points. The Tigers
won the match on a kill by Jamie Hamm.
Game two was also close as the Highlanders kept hanging around
until the Tigers won the last three points to make it 30-24.
In game one, Pacific led 7-2 before the UCR got within one
at 14-13 on a kill by sophomore Rosanna Parizek. The Highlanders
could not get any closer as the Tigers closed out the game
30-25 on a kill by Courtney Miller.
Sophomore Katie DeRoos led the Highlanders with 12 kills ad
six digs. Junior Pam Hartman added nine kills and nine digs.
Freshman Shannon Burmaster had nine kills and hit .444.
The Tigers were led by Hamm with 15 kills and seven digs while
Jennifer Joines added 14 kills.
Northridge Sweeps Highlanders
(September 21, 2001) - The UC Riverside Highlanders lost their
first ever Big West match to Cal State Northridge 30-23,30-28,30-16
on Friday night at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside,
CA.
The Matadors (7-3, 2-0) had a hitting percentage of .248 while
the Highlanders(7-3, 0-1) hit .091. Laura Walter had a .400
hitting percentage and 14 kills.
Sophomore Pam Hartman led the Highlanders with 14 kills, 16
assists and 16 digs. Freshman Shannon Burmaster added eight
kills and 11 digs.
UCR Falls To San Diego in
Five Games
(September 18, 2001) - The UC Riverside Highlanders had their
seven match winning streak snapped by the University of San
Diego 18-30, 30-17, 30-25, 24-30, 15-13 on Tuesday at the
Student Recreation Center.
In the fifth game, the Highlanders (7-2) were down 13-6 before
storming back to get within 14-13 but lost on a service error
to end the match. San Diego improves their record to 6-2.
Junior Pam Hartman led the Highlanders with 22 kills, 22 assists
and 16 digs. Sophomore Katie Deroos added a double-double
with 14 kills and 19 digs.
Highlanders Win Rose Hill Classic Finishing Tourney 3-0
(September 8, 2001) - The UC Riverside Highlanders won the
Rose Hill Classic by defeating Manhattan College 30-21, 30-26,
30-28 and Howard University 30-13, 30-24, 30-18 on Saturday
in Bronx, NY. The Highlanders have won seven straight matches
on their New York trip.
In the opener, sophomore Allison Donald led the Highlanders
(7-1) with 10 kills and .375 hitting percentage. Junior Pam
Hartman added nine kills, 13 assists, and 11 digs.
Against Howard, Hartman had a triple-double with 10 kills,
21 assists, and 10 digs. Donald had 11 kills and freshman
Shannon Burmaster added 10 kills. UCR hit .278 to only .020
for the Lady Bison.
UCR Matches Win Total of Last Year with 5th Straight Win
(September 7, 2001) - The UC Riverside Highlanders swept host
Fordham University 30-21, 30-24, 30-20 in their first match
of the Fordham tournament for their fifth consecutive win
on Friday in Bronx, New York.
The Highlanders matched last season's win total in only their
sixth match of the year, after finishing 5-24 last season.
The Highlanders hit .286 for the match to only .111 for the
Rams.
Katie Deroos led the Highlanders with 15 kills and a career-high
.520 hitting percentage. Junior Pam Hartman added eight kills
and eight assists.
Highlanders Continue Winning Streak by Defeating Army
(September 5, 2001) - The UC Riverside Highlanders defeated
Army 30-22, 30-28, 27-30, 30-7 for their fourth consecutive
victory on Wednesday in West Point, New York.
UCR (4-1) out played Army on defense, collecting 102 digs
to only 67 for the Black Knights. Sophomore Katie Deroos led
the Highlanders with 22 digs while also contributing 14 kills.
Junior Pam Hartman had a triple-double with 12 kills, 12 assists
and 19 digs and freshman Shannon Burmaster added nine kills
and 15 digs. Sophomores Rosanna Parizek and Allison Donald
combined for four block solos and 11 block assists.
UCR Defeats Binghamton for Third Straight Win
(September 3, 2001) - The UC Riverside Highlanders picked
up their third consecutive victory by defeating Binghamton
University 30-27, 30-19, 28-30, 30-26 on Monday in Vestal,
New York.
The Highlanders (3-1) continued their dominant blocking with
18 total blocks. They led in the blocking department by a
margin of 18-5.
Leading the way was sophomore Allison Donald with four block
solos and four block assists. Junior Pam Hartman added two
block solos and two block assists. Hartman also led the Highlanders
in kills with 12. Sophomore Katie Deroos added 10 kills and
12 digs.
Highlanders Notch First Official DI Victories by Taking Two
at Colgate Tourney
(September 1, 2001) - The UC Riverside Highlanders picked
up two victories by defeating host Colgate University 30-24,
30-24, 30-22 and UNC-Greensboro 30-24, 29-31, 30-14, 30-27
at the Colgate White Eagle Invitational Saturday in Hamilton,
New York.
In the opener, UCR hit .351, higher than all but one of their
matches from the 2000 season. Leading the way for the Highlanders
(2-1) was sophomore Pam Hartman with 12 kills and 14 assists.
Freshman Shannon Burmaster added eight kills and six digs
while Allison Donald had one block solo and six block assists.
Against UNCG, the Highlanders had their best blocking match
since the 1999 campaign with 12 block solos and 22.5 total
blocks. Sophomore Katie Deroos led UCR with 19 kills and 24
digs, both career highs. Hartman chipped in with a triple
double, producing 14 kills, 22 assists, and 10 digs.
Highlanders Fall To Saints in First Volleyball Match of the
Season
(August 31, 2001) - The UC Riverside Highlanders dropped their
opening match of the 2001 season Friday, 14-30, 31-29, 30-23,
30-24 to Siena University.
The match marked the opening of the 2001-2002 season in which
UCR is officially Division I.
Sophomore Allison Donald led the Highlanders (0-1) with 12
kills and .571 hitting percentage while sophomore Katie Deroos
added 11 kills and 10 digs. Junior Pam Hartman had 10 kills
and 15 digs for the Highlanders.
In Game one, the Highlanders came out firing, hitting at a
.405 clip with only three hitting errors to capture the first
game. However, UCR only hit .156 the rest of the way and had
20 hitting errors.
UC Riverside Volleyball Signs
Lisa LaBaron to National Letter of Intent
(April 20, 2001) - The UC Riverside women's volleyball team
announced that Lisa LaBaron, a 5-11 outside hitter from Brawley
Union HS in Brawley, CA, had signed a National Letter of Intent.
"Lisa is a great athlete with outstanding jumping ability.
Although she hasn't played a lot of club ball, we are excited
because her potential as an outside hitter is unlimited,"
Coach Sue Gozansky said. "We were impressed by her improvement
in a short period of time during club play."
A four-year varsity letter winner for the Wildcats, she was
named team MVP in 1998, 2000 and 2001. She also earned four
varsity letters in basketball and two in track and field.
The Highlanders finished at 5-24 last season, their first
playing against Division I competition. The Highlanders will
join the Big West Conference in Fall, 2001.
UC Riverside Volleyball Signs JC Transfer Amy Sperry to National
Letter of Intent
(April 16, 2001) - The UC Riverside women's volleyball team
announced that Amy Sperry, a 6-0 middle blocker from Cuesta
Junior College in San Luis Obispo, had signed a National Letter
of Intent Monday.
"We are really exited to add Amy to our team," Coach
Sue Gozansky said. "We have a young team and Amy will
add maturity and experience. She is also extremely versatile.
She can play both the middle and outside positions as well
as both the front and back row."
"She is very fun, very easy to get along with,"
Gozansky added. "I think she will add a lot of personality
to our team."
A team captain, Sperry was named First Team All-League in
her sophomore campaign at Cuesta and earned All Tournament
honors at the Gridley Tournament. In 1999 she earned Second
Team All-League honors. She played in high school at Summerville
H.S. in Tuolume, CA where she helped the Bears to second place
finishes in the Mother Lode League. As a senior she led her
team to a second place finish in Nor-Cals.
The Highlanders finished at 5-24 last season, their first
playing against Division I competition. The Highlanders will
join the Big West Conference in Fall 2001.
