(August 23, 2002) - 5 wins…10
wins…next up: 20 wins.
“We believe we are
capable of winning. It’s a huge challenge but one that
we look forward to,” Head Coach Sue Gozansky said. “I
have a lot of confidence in this team and a lot of respect
for what they have accomplished so far.”
“The team is developing
the mental and physical tools that it takes to be competitive
in this arena. We have a solid group of athletes returning
who finished strong in the league,” she said. “The
new recruits will have a positive impact and give us more
depth at setter and outside hitting.”
“The only philosophy
I know is to go after the win and to have a good experience,”
Gozansky said. “But we have no illusions. The reality
is that it is tough but not impossible to win in the Big West.
We have learned a lot of lessons the last few years and taken
our lumps but we have grown.”
“We improved in every
facet of the game but we’re still in a game of catch
up,” she said. “We are competing against experienced
Division I teams and we are still in the early stages of developing
a competitive program at this level.”
The schedule includes non-conference
games against St. Mary’s, UNLV, Army, Nevada, Denver,
Portland, Weber State, Alabama-Birmingham, Iowa, University
of San Diego, San Diego State and a full slate of Big West
teams.
Last season’s schedule allowed the team to get some
wins and gain confidence, an important factor when dealing
with a young squad and their first time in the Big West. “In
order to get better, we need to play against tougher competition.
We need to be prepared for the level of play during conference,”
she said. “I am not sure that we were prepared for the
level of competition in the past but now we are. We are not
going into matches scared. We have finally found confidence
in our ability to compete.”
“We spent the last
two years learning how good the volleyball is and how much
we need to elevate our game in order to be competitive. The
mentality has to be there with the level of toughness and
the ability to make good choices,” Gozansky said. “We
were finally able to find some success. We beat some good
teams at the end of last season and showed improvement.”
The Highlanders return a
pair of familiar faces at outside hitter. Pam Hartman (5-10,
Lakewood, CA) is a senior who appeared in all 27 matches last
season and led the team in digs with 3.07 digs per game and
was second in kills at 3.01 per game. Hartman will return
to a starting outside hitting position after spending the
beginning of last year in a combination role as a setter/hitter,
thus compiling six triple-doubles and 11 double-doubles. “Pam
will play a major role as a team captain, with experience
and confidence of being a four-year starter.”
Katie DeRoos (6-1, Manteca,
CA), a junior, played in all 27 matches and led the team with
3.12 kills per game, third in digs at 2.79 per game and had
six double-doubles. “She has the best natural talent
of anyone who has played at UCR. She has made steady improvements
in her front and backrow skills and plays with poise and confidence
beyond her years,” Gozansky said.
“Both players gained
a lot of confidence last season by learning how to play at
a high level when the going gets tough. They have elevated
their game to where we know we can go to them at crucial points,”
Gozansky said.
Joining DeRoos and Hartman on the front line are sophomore
Lisa LeBaron (5-11, Brawley, CA), freshman Jamie DeKiewiet
(5-11, Hemet, CA) and freshman Valerie Bueno (5-8, Culver
City, CA). Each brings a different facet to the game and will
elevate the team’s level of play.
LeBaron found most of her
time as a defensive specialist last season, recording 101
digs for a 1.66 average while also compiling 13 service aces.
“Lisa had some freshman struggles but has made great
strides in practice. She is a great athlete with a good vertical,”
Gozansky said. “She is very versatile and will compete
for time as an outside hitter, libero and/or defensive specialist.”
“Jamie is very impressive.
She hits hard with good angles and is the consistent passer
that we need. She has an all-around game and attacks the ball
with a lot of heat. If she can make a quick transition to
the college game, she can be a real force for us.”
Valerie is described by
Gozansky as small but very athletic. “She plays high
above the net, is quick in the back row and has a great jump
serve. As a lefty, she is deceptive, owns lots of shots besides
hitting with power,” she said.
The Highlanders have two returnees in the middle, junior Rosanna
Parizek (6-0, Sebastopol, CA) and senior Amy Sperry (6-0,
Twain Harte, CA). Parizek led the team in hitting percentage
at .206 and blocking with 1.25 blocks per game. Sperry suffered
injuries early in the season, but still played in 51 games
and finished with 38 blocks.
“Rosanna has worked
hard to improve her blocking and hitting. She is playing with
more confidence and intensity. She knows the game well and
has the size, strength and skill to be a big weapon for us
this year,” she said. “Amy is a good blocker and
hitter and might be the quickest middle in the conference.
She is working hard to be a consistent threat at the net.”
Sophomore Tiffany Brooks
(5-9, Anaheim, CA) returns at the setter spot where she played
in 26 matches and led the team with 755 assists. She was second
on the team in digs with 2.88 per game. “Tiffany has
an incredible ability to maintain her composure in the heat
of a match despite her youth,” Gozansky said.
Kymberly Murphy (5-9, San
Diego, CA) also looks to get some time at the setter position.
“Kym provides a taller block while Tiffany has stronger
backrow defensive skills,” she said. “Both bring
strengths to the team that we will tactically take advantage
of.”
The Highlanders remaining
six players will be vying for the defensive specialist and
libero spots. The libero, which can replace any back row player,
is being instituted with 12 substitutions. The group of five
includes juniors Kristen Thompson (5-10, Yorba Linda, CA)
and Reylynn Wright (5-7, La Mirada, CA), senior Cari Taylor
(5-7, Peoria, AZ), sophomore Lindsay Drennen (5-7, Hermosa
Beach, CA), redshirt freshman Miranda Rivas (5-2, Riverside,
CA) and freshman Ashley Halperin.
“The key to winning
these spots is great passing and defensive skills along with
the ‘spirit’ to lift the team,” Gozansky
said.
Thompson played in 27 matches
and had 158 digs for a 1.86 average while also delivering
12 service aces. Wright saw action at the end of the season,
playing in 18 games and recording 15 digs. Also in limited
time, Drennen had 32 digs in 20 games and Taylor recorded
40 assists and 45 digs.
“Kristen has the advantage
since she has the most court experience and has been the most
consistent player in the passing and defense categories but
right on her heels are Reylynn, Miranda and Lindsay who are
very solid and experienced players,” she said.
“Cari was our back-up
setter last season but will probably move over to the DS.
She is not a likely candidate for the libero because she has
a great serve, but the libero can’t serve,” Gozansky
said.
Halperin provides more competition
at the defensive specialist spot. She was previously a starter
on the outside for er club team.
Gozansky is keeping her
fingers crossed that there are no major injuries. There is
solid talent returning and skilled freshmen coming into the
program. “We are now ready for the challenges. We have
to continue do extra in order to catch up to the best. We
have to out work everyone else.”

expertise, contributions to the school and community and special
achievements throughout their careers.
Trainer has been an assistant

for Monica, because it recognizes her efforts in a position

Gozansky said. “We have had a lot of success with this
program over the years, but we wouldn’t have gotten
as far as we have without Monica.”
