(Dec. 20, 2004) - The UC
Riverside Highlanders announced the signing of three student-athletes
to National Letters of Intent Monday. Joining the program
in 2004-05 are outside hitters Laura Eck and Amy Read, and
setter Tarin Tartaglia.
“This recruiting class
is probably the best we have had in the Division I era,”
Head Coach Sue Gozansky said. “We have three high-level
club players with a lot of volleyball experience. It is very
exciting.”
Eck is a 6-1 outside hitter
from Torrey Pines HS in San Diego, CA. In 2003 she helped
her squad to a Palomar League Co-Championship and was named
to the 2003 Union-Tribune All Academic Team. In 2003 she participated
in the US Junior Olympic Invitational (16 Division), earning
All-Tournament team honors. Eck will play for the Laguna Beach
Volleyball Club this season.
“Laura is a very physical
player with great experience. We haven’t had too many
6-1 outside hitters over the years, so that is very exciting,”
Gozansky said. “She also has good back row skills, passing
and digging.”
Read will join UCR from
Clovis West HS in Fresno, CA. A 5-11 outside hitter, she plays
on the Central California Volleyball Club team out of Fresno.
Read comes from a “volleyball family” in which
parents Thomas and Brenda Read are both former players and
coaches. Thomas Read has a long history with Gozansky, dating
back to his coaching days at Chapman University and Santa
Ana College and his playing days with the US National Team.
“Amy has played a
long time because of her parents’ involvement in the
sport, and she has very good all-around skills,” Gozansky
said. “The strongest part of her game right now is her
block, and that is something that we need to improve to compete
in the Big West.”
Tartaglia is a 5-8 setter
from Immanuel High School Eagles in Reedley, CA, and is a
teammate of Read on the Central California Volleyball Club.
She will likely start out as the back-up to senior setter
Kym Murphy.
“Tarin brings all
the qualities we need in the setting position. She arrives
to the ball quickly to set and play defense. She’s got
a setter’s mentality to make good decisions and a personality
to inspire and lead her team. She’ll have a year to
learn the position in a back-up role and can “take the
reins” in 2006,” Gozansky said.
(April 27, 2005) -Moreau
Catholic High School middle blocker Raquel Salinas of Hayward,
CA has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend UC Riverside
in 2005, UCR Head Coach Sue Gozansky announced Monday.
Salinas, a 6'0", right-handed
middle with a block jump of 9'4", was a four-year letterwinner
for Coach Barbara Klews at MCHS and earned first team All-Hayward
Area Athletic League honors as a sophomore and was team MVP
in 2003 and 2004. She played club volleyball for the Cal Golden
Bears and has played with fellow UCR signee Brittney Murrey.
"Raquel will bring
us increased depth in the middle and will have the opportunity
to contribute right away," Gozansky said. "She has
great quickness and speed and had the ability to take over
matches at the high school and club level. She has a great
deal of potential."
(May 6, 2005) -Brittney
Murrey has signed a National Letter of Intent to play at UC
Riverside, Head Coach Sue Gozansky announced Friday.
Murrey is a 5-11 setter/opposite
hitter from St. Mary's College High School in Berkeley, CA.
"We are thrilled to
have discovered a talented young setter in Britt," Gozansky
said. "She has a natural touch on the ball that produces
a beautiful release and has the ability to set great distances
from anywhere on the court with ease. She is young to the
position but her potential is outstanding.
"She will add important
depth to the setting position for the next four or five years,"
Gozansky said of Murrey's role on the team. "Additionally,
she is an excellent blocker and back row defensive player.
She will be a force to deal with in the Big West."
As a senior, Murrey earned
league MVP honors as she led St. Mary's to a 29-11 overall
mark and a 13-0 regular season record in the Bay Shore Athletics
League, to the North Coast Section Division IV Championship
game, and the Nor-Cal Semi-final.
Murrey is the fourth signee
for UCR, joining outside hitters Laura Eck and Amy Read, and
setter Tarin Tartaglia, who signed in December.

five straight points to take a 22-20 lead. UCR pulled away

game.
The Highlanders opened the
fifth game on a 4-0 run and the Matadors quickly called a
time out and got on the board a moment later. UCR built a

For the Anteaters, Amanda Vazquez had 26 kills and hit .500
on the night (26-2-48), and Lauren Kellerman had 21 kills
(21-8-43) and hit .302. The Anteaters hit .314 on the night
(78-23-175), compared to UCR's .210 (78-36-200). The Anteaters
were plagued by errors, surrendering 11 aces to UCR.
DeKiewiet's 30 kills was
the first time a Highlander reached the that plateau since
Rosanna Parizek had 31 kills on August 29, 2003 against Rice
University.
The Highlanders led game
one 27-19, but the Anteaters rallied to score nine straight
points behind the serving of Kellerman to take the lead at
28-27. Halperin's kill broke the streak to tie the match at
28-28. Freshman Jessica Regner's first career service ace
gave UCR the lead, and UCI Coach Charlie Brande called time
out and UCI got the sideout to tie the match.
Bueno's kill gave the the
Highlanders the advantage at 31-30, and White's hitting error
gave UCR the game at 32-30. It was the second time this season
that the teams battled into overtime in the opening stanza
of the match. UCI hit .419 (17-4-31) in the match, compared
to the Highlanders .220 (20-11-41).
Game two was a good, old
fashioned, side-out war, featuring 12 ties and seven lead
changes. UCI took a three point advantage at 23-20, but the
Highlanders came back to tie at 24-24, but the Anteaters again
scored two straight to build back the two-point margin. Again
the Highlanders rallied behind an ace by Murphy and a block
of Kristen Kelly by DeKiewiet and Janiece Manuel for a 28-26
lead. An UCI hitting error and a kill by Bueno secured the
game for the Highlanders.
The Anteaters took the momentum
back in game three, leading by as many as seven points 21-14
and 27-20 before finishing with a 30-23 win. The Anteaters
had seven kills from Both Vazquez and Kellerman in the game,
hitting .471 (19-3-34), compared to UCR's .111 (11-7-36).
The fourth game was much
like game two for the first half, but the Highlanders took
the early momentum with four straight points, two coming on
kills by DeKiewiet and one on a block by Bueno and Manuel,
to make the score 18-14 and force the Anteaters into a timeout.
UCI cut the margin to one several times, then tied the match
at 27-27 on a kill by White. The Highlanders brought it to
match point a few moments later at 29-28 following a kill
by Angie Mitchell, but moments later the Anteaters tied it
again on a ball handling error by Mitchell. Conom followed
with an ace to give UCI a 30-29 lead, but UCR tied it on a
DeKiewiet kill. UCI's Kelly tooled a DeKiewiet block to give
UCI back the lead, then Halperin was called for a ball handling
error to give UCI the game at 32-30.
In the decider, UCR led
8-7 at the switch, then scored four straight points, two coming
on a DeKiewiet kill and a solo block, to take a 12-7 lead.
DeKiewiet hammered two more kills to bring the Highlanders
back to match point, and Murphy ended the nearly two-and-a-half
hour match with an ace.
Prior to the match the Highlanders
honored graduating seniors DeKiewiet, Murphy and Bueno.

Riverside 9-0 as a team.

and forth in game three with the Titans trailing most of the
way. The Titans caught up at 27-27 and continued to wrestle
