(Sept. 21, 2007) –
For the third consecutive time, the UC Riverside (4-2-0) women’s
soccer team won convincingly over their visiting opponent.
This time the Highlanders defeated the Fresno State Bulldogs
(3-3-0) by the score of 5-1.
Just seven minutes into
the match Jill Del Rosario led Tessa Lannala with a pass that
Lannala made a sliding kick over the charging keeper, scoring
the first goal of the match.
Lennala assisted on a goal
in the 15th minute as she took a corner kick from the left
side of the goal. She lofted the ball perfectly to the far
post where the 5-10 Ashley Parks put a perfect header on for
a two-goal lead.
The third Highlander goal
was set up by Pat Brady who charged through the Bulldogs’
defense before passing to her left to the sprinting Lannala
who scored her second goal of the match on a strike from the
top of the 18-yard box. Lennala’s two goals were good
for her career high and with her assist she also set a new
career high with five points in a match.
With less than three minutes
left in the first half, Fresno State tallied their first and
last goal of the match. In a battle for the ball at midfield
the Bulldogs’ Amanda Reyes drove the ball to the far
right corner of UCR’s territory where Ali Sill tracked
it down and delivered a cross to Andrea Salvador who beat
Deanna Borgelt for the goal.
Natalie Ducatenzeiler scored
her first goal (49:09) in front of the home crowd on a feed
from Brady 25 yards out, over the outstrectched arms of the
keeper. The assist was Brady’s second of the match and
the goal was Ducatenzeiler’s third of the seaon, tying
her for the team-lead with Lennala.
The last goal of the match
came off the foot of redshirt freshman Nicole Yumori, who
took the corner kick from Lauren Leonard and placed a perfect
shot into the left side of the goal.
The five goals in a match were the most the Highlanders have
scored since a similar 5-1 score in a victory over Columbia
on 9/11/05
UC Riverside returns to
action at the UCR Soccer Stadium Sunday as they face #25 San
Diego at 1:00 pm. The Toreros will be the second ranked team
