UCR Falls to #25 San Diego

(Sept. 23, 2007) – The UC Riverside Highlanders (5-3) failed in their second attempt to defeat a ranked team as they fell 3-1 to the 25th-ranked University of San Diego Toreros, Sunday afternoon at the UCR Soccer Stadium. Earlier in the season the Highlanders fell to #22 Oregon.

UC Riverside played well in the first half as they held the Toreros to one goal. Amy Epsten’s shot beat UCR’s Deanna Borgelt in the seventh minute on an assist from Vanessa Vella. Even in giving up that goal Borgelt played big as she ended the first half with four quality saves.

At 26:52 the Highlanders’ Tessa Lennala stayed hot with her third goal in two matches. Lennala took a pass from Pat Brady at the right corner of the 18-yard box and lobbed a shot over the charging keeper, tying the match at one.

UCR played also played well in the second half, but the Toreros applied consistant offensive pressure that led to two more goals. Jen Mello (57:20) and Ashleigh Shoughro (82:36) were assisted by Natalie Vinti and Leigh Ann Robinson, respectively, giving San Diego the 3-1 advantage.

The Highlanders return to action Friday as they host Wyoming at 3:00 pm at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
