(Oct. 5, 2007) – The
UC Riverside Highlanders (7-4-0, 1-0-0) needed two overtime
periods to win their Big West opener, 2-1, over the Cal Poly
Mustangs (1-8-1, 0-1) in San Luis Obispo.
Tessa Lennala opened the scoring in the match with an unassisted
goal in the 16th minute, her team-leadingsixth of the season.
The Mustangs fired 11 shots
in each of the halves, with Sharon Day’s shot at 61:19
reaching the back of the net, tying the contest at one.
For the match, CP outshot
the Highlanders by a total of 25-8, but it was the last shot
of the night that made the difference. Last season’s
goal-scoring leader for the Highlanders, Jenna Leonti, wound
up with a golden opportunity late in the second overtime period,
taking a loose ball on the right side of the box with Cal
Poly goalkeeper Alli Tramel off her line. Leonti booted the
ball past Tramel and gave the Highlanders a dramatic victory.
UCR’s Deanna Borgelt
was great in net for the Highlanders as she made a career
high nine saves in her Big West debut.
The Highlanders remain on
the road for their next match against UC Santa Barbara, Sunday
at 1:00 pm.
