(Oct. 12, 2007) –
The UC Riverside Highlanders (7-5-1, 1-1-1) fell behind early,
but scored the equalizer against the Pacific Tigers (6-4-3,
1-1-1) in a hard-played 1-1 tie at UCR Soccer Stadium.
The game was played at a
frenzied pace as there was a total of 33 shots and 27 fouls.
The match also featured three yellow cards with two drawn
against UCR.
Pacific’s Carla Vellutini
headed in the first goal of the match at 23:13 after a deflection
of a long free kick volley off the foot of Montez Harrison.
The Highlanders kept constant
pressure on the Tigers, leading to a miscue in the 36th minute.
Sarah Mohammadi tried to play a ball to Tessa Lennala, but
a UP defender jumped up to clear it, but placed it right to
the foot of Lennala, who blasted it into the back of the net,
just to the left of the keeper. Lennala’s seventh goal
of the season ties her for fourth place on the schools all-time
record for goals in a season.
The rest of the match was
played with both teams unable to capitalize on the few scoring
chances they had. The tie fails to separate these two teams
as both were in a four-way tie for third place in the Big
West Conference standings.
The Highlanders host UC
Davis this Sunday at the UCR Soccer Stadium, with the match
set to start at 1:00 p.m.
