(Oct. 19, 2007) –
The UC Riverside Highlanders (8-6-1, 2-2-1) fell to the Matadors
of Cal State Northridge (3-9-1, 1-3-1), 2-0 on a very hot
afternoon in Riverside at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
Northridge’s Susie
Mischenko scored her team leading fourth goal of the season
at the 16:29 mark. She was able to dribble through Highlander
defenders into the box and beat the keeper with a blast to
the right side of the goal from only 10 yards away.
The Matadors added another
goal at 48:35 on a penalty kick off the foot Kristy Krohn.
Krohn was charging after a ball when she hit the ground inside
the penalty box, Sarah Mohammadi was given a yellow card for
the foul.
The pace of the game was
sluggish due to the heat. A total of 11 fouls were called
in a match that featured 22 shots.
An unfortunate incident
occurred in the 87th minute when a cross was played in front
of the CSUN keeper Ivette Esqueda. UCR senior defender Jill
Del Rosario was trying to put a head on the ball when she
violently collided with Esqueda. After a half hour, both players
left the game, Esqueda under her own power and Rosario on
a stretcher as she was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
The Highlanders played aggressively
to end the match but were unable to gain any scoring opportunities.
UCR will travel to Long
Beach as they take on the top team in the Big West Conference,
Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
