UC Riverside Announces Pair of Women's Soccer Signings

(March 21, 2002) - The University of California Riverside women's soccer team has announced the signing of two players for the 2002 season.

Coach Veronica O'Brien announced that the Highlanders have signed Renee Scachetti and Amber Plumlee to national letters of intent.

Plumlee is a 5-7 forward/midfielder from Sonora High School in La Habra, CA who played for the Claremont Stars club team. She was a four-year starter on the varsity and earned all-league honors in her freshman, sophomore and junior years. She was the leading scorer for the Sonora HS squad and was named Offensive Player of the Year in 2000-01. Other honors included being an honor roll student and being named to the All-Area team.

"Amber will add an offensive threat to our team," O'Brien said. "She is a natural goal scorer, possesses explosive speed and incredible work rate."

Scachetti is a 5-8 midfielder from Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, CA who played for the Fram Splash club team. She was a four-year starter on the varsity and helped her team to the Del Rey League Championships in 1998-99 and 1999-00. She was named a member of the 1997 District 4 Olympic Development team and was also a scholar athlete.

"Renee will add another dominating, aggressive force in the center of the field," O'Brien said. "Technically and tactically she has a great ability to change the pace of a game."

Highlanders Fall in Opener at SDSU, 5-1

(Aug. 30, 2002) - The UC Riverside Highlanders opened the season on the wrong foot Friday with a 5-1 loss at San Diego State University.

Sophomore forward Jessica Armel scored her first goal of the season in the 14th minute to tie the match at 1-1, but the Aztecs answered with four unanswered goals over the next 76 minutes to pull away.

Highlander goaltender Katie Blank faced 15 shots, five on goal, and made three saves. The Highlanders had just three shots on the afternoon.

UCR returns to action on Monday at 1:00 PM against San Jose State at the UCR Lower Field.

Highlanders Lose to SJSU, 3-0

(Sept. 2, 2002) - Spartan junior Mariko Yoshihara scored two goals and senior Emily New added a goal and an assist as the San Jose State Spartans earned their first victory of the season defeating UC Riverside 3-0 at the UCR Lower Fields on Monday.

The Spartans (1-1) opened the scoring in the tenth minute when Jeane Sunseri wrestled the ball away from Highlander forward Tracy Schuster and passed ahead to Spartan forward Alaina Chandler. Chandler controlled the pass and centered to a streaking New, who beat UCR goalie Katie Blank to the left post and the Spartans opened up a 1-0 lead.

SJSU added to the lead in the 80th minute as Yoshihara scored the first of her two goals on a breakaway. New delivered a pass hitting Yoshihara in perfect stride whom sped past the Scot's defense line and easily beat Blank with a shot to the right post. Yoshihara added a goal with less then a minute remaining, stealing the ball from Blank and chipping it into the net.

UCR appeared to dictate play, having out-shot the Spartans 17-10, with most of the match taking place in Spartan territory. San Jose State goalie Erin Lavey recorded five saves.

With the loss, the Highlanders fell to 0-2 on the season, having been outscored 8-1 in the two losses.

The Highlanders return to action next Friday, September 6, against the University of San Diego Toreros at the UCR Lower Fields at 3:00 PM.

Highlanders Lose to San Diego, 3-0

(Sept. 6, 2002) - The University of San Diego Toreros scored two early goals and played tough defense to keep the lead in a 3-0 victory at the Lower Fields at UC Riverside on Friday.

The Toreros got on the board in the first eight minutes of the contest when midfielder Brooke Roby took a centering pass from Katie Allen and scored to put the Toreros on the board. Highlanders’ goal keeper Katie Blank came out to challenge Roby who made a move to beat her to the right post and chip it into the open net.

Twelve minutes later, the Toreros added to their lead when forward Michelle Rowe’s shot ricocheted out in front of the net and LeAnne Klopschinski pushed the ball past Blank for a 2-0 advantage.

USD added to the lead eight minutes into the second half when Brenna Mullen stole the ball from Blank and chipped the ball into the empty net. With the loss, UCR fell to 0-3 on the season, while the Toreros improved to 2-1.

The Highlanders return to action on Sunday, as they play host to the University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine at 3 PM at the Lower Fields.

Highlanders Comeback to Defeat Hawaii, 3-2

(Sept. 8, 2002) - Freshman Renee Scachetti scored her first collegiate goal with less than two minutes remaining to cap a UC Riverside comeback as the Highlanders used three second half goals to defeat the University of Hawaii 3-2 at the Lower Fields on Sunday.

With time winding down, Erika Bligh fed Scachetti who drilled a 20-foot line drive that hit the cross bar and fell into the net behind goalie Jennifer Churchill to break a 2-2 tie. The win was the first of the season for UCR (1-3). The Rainbow Wahine fall to 1-2-1.

Hawaii jumped out to an early lead when Natalie Groenewoud hit a 25-foot shot that was just out of the reach of Highlander goalie Kristen Cocks for a 1-0 Hawaii advantage.

At the 70 minute mark, UCR knotted the game when freshman Lisa Jensen took a cross pass from Kelly Hurley and beat Churchill to the right post. The goal was Jensen's first of her career, and ended a 326 minute scoreless drought for UC Riverside.

Six minutes later, Hawaii regained the advantage when Krystalynn Ontai's corner kick deflected off of a UCR defenseman and into the Highlander net, and Hawaii led 2-1.

UCR tied the game six minutes later when Jessica Armel took a pass from Kristi Tanaka and found herself all alone against Churchill and beat her to the right post to tie the game at two apiece, setting up Scachetti's heroics. UCR out-shot Hawaii 23-18.

"I am extremely proud of the efforts of my girls today, " commented Head Coach Veronica O'Brien, "We made an adjustment to attack on offense. I am glad to see that we took that aggressive mentality."

The Highlanders return to action on Friday, as they travel to Nevada for the Nevada Tournament. Game time is at 5:30 PM.

UCR Defeats Nevada, 3-0

(Sept. 13, 2002) - The UC Riverside Highlanders defeated the University of Nevada Wolfpack 3-0 in the opening game of the Wolf Pack Classic at Mackay Stadium on Friday.

Junior Kelli Fahres scored with 27:50 minutes left in the half off an assist from senior Colleen Sweeney. The match then went scoreless until the final four mintues when freshman Renee Scachetti slipped one past Wolfpack goalkeeper Megan Tarpenning on a pass from freshman Tanya Decman. Freshmen Ashlee Stephens finished the scoring with an unassisted goal with two minutes left in the game.

Senior Kristin Cocks recorded the shutout with four saves while Tarpenning had seven saves. The Highlanders (2-3) outshot the Wolfpack (1-4), 15-7.

The Highlanders return to action on Sunday against Eastern Washington University at 1:00 PM.

UCR 'Keeper Leads Team To Second Shutout

(Sept. 15, 2002) - Senior goalkeeper Kristin Cocks registered her second straight shutout to lead the UC Riverside Highlanders to a 2-0 win over Eastern Washington at the Wolf Pack Classic at Mackay Stadium on Sunday.

The Highlanders struck in the 40th minute on an unassisted goal for Jessica Armel, her third of the year, from the top of the box. Tracy Shuster's first goal of the season added insurance in the 51st minute off an assist by Tanya Noonan. UCR outshot the Eagles, 10-7 in the game.

Cocks had three saves while Eastern Washington 'keeper Katie Grothkopp had five saves.

The Highlanders return to action on Friday against Prarie View A&M in a tournament in El Paso, Texas with a game time of 3:00 PM.

Highlanders Cruise to Win Over Prairie View A&M

(Sept. 20, 2002) - The UC Riverside Highlanders (4-3) set several school records in an 11-0 win over Prairie View A&M at the University of Texas, El Paso Friday.

Among the records set by the Highlanders were goals (11), shots, (66), and assists (6). PVAM (0-4) had 23 saves.

The Highlanders opened the scoring in the seventh minute on a header by Renee Scachetti, the first of seven first period goals. The Highlanders added four in the second half.

Allison Stone led the Highlanders with five points, scoring two goals and adding an assist. Vanessa Chanez, Tracy Schuster and Erin Fahres also scored twice each. Kelly Hurley and Jessica Armel also scored goals for UCR, with Hurley adding two assists.

Fahres also set an individual school record with 12 shots in the contest, seven on goal.

The Highlanders posted their third straight shutout, a combined effort of Kristin Cocks and Katie Blank, who split time in net.

The Highlanders play Stephan F. Austin on Sunday.

Highlanders Pitch Fourth Straight Shutout With 6-0 Win Over Stephen F. Austin

(Sept. 22, 2002) - The UC Riverside Highlanders shutout, 6-0, Stephen F. Austin at the University of Texas, El Paso Tournament. The win was the Highlanders' (5-3) fifth in a row and their fourth straight shutout.

The Highlanders opened the scoring in the second minute on a goal by Lisa Jensen but were held scoreless the rest of the first half.

The Highlanders blew the game open with five goals in the second half, as Renee Scachetti opened the scoring in the 49th minute. Jensen scored her second goal of the game in 62nd minute, starting a flood that saw the Highlanders tally three more goals in the next 14 minutes, two by Erin Fahres and one by Kelly Hurley.

The Highlanders allowed just six shots on the game. Kristin Cocks started in goal, playing 67 minutes and making one save. She was relieved by Katie Blank, who recorded two saves in the match. Lindsay Hellman had a pair of assists for the Highlanders.

Highlanders Sting Hornets, Post Fifth Straight Shutout

(Sept. 27, 2002) - Kerri Fahres’ second half goal provided UCR with all the offense it would need as goal keeper Kristin Cocks and the Highlander defense posted their fifth straight shutout in defeating Sacramento State 1-0 at the Lower Fields on Friday.

In the opening minute of the second half of a scoreless match, forward Tracey Schuster lined up for a corner kick from the left corner. Schuster centered a pass that midfielder Kelly Hurley allowed to travel through her legs to a wide-open Fahres. Fahres controlled the pass and blasted a 12-foot shot past Sacramento State goalkeeper Michelle Balzouman, and UCR held a 1-0 advantage.

UCR had another scoring opportunity in the 72nd minute, when Jessica Armel found herself open in front of the Sacramento net, but her shot missed wide. UCR out shot the Hornets (1-6-1) 19-5. Cocks recorded two saves.
With the win, the Highlanders extend their winning streak to six, (6-3), and the UCR defense has not allowed a goal in 466 minutes.

The Highlanders will return to action playing host to the University of San Francisco in a non-conference match on Sunday, September 29 at 1:00 PM.

Dons End UCR’s Streaks, Win 1-0

(Sept. 27, 2002) - USF forward Jodie Tanga’s goal in the 62nd minute put a halt to UCR’s shutout streak, and proved to be the winning goal in UC Riverside’s 1-0 loss to the University of San Francisco Dons at the Lower Fields on Sunday.

USF forward Meghan Daly centered from the left corner and Highlander goalie Kristin Cocks tried to intercept and missed, allowing the ball to travel to Tanga who scored for a 1-0 USF advantage. The goal was the first that UCR had surrendered in 525 minutes, ending the Highlanders’ five game shutout streak.

Tanga’s goal proved to be the difference as UCR (6-4), could not take advantage of countless scoring opportunities. In the eighth minute, Kerri Fahres fed a wide-open Lisa Jensen on a breakaway. Jensen, in a one-on-one situation with the USF goalkeeper, hit the post.

In the 44th minute, Renee Scachetti kicked an 18-footer that hit off the crossbar. USF (6-1-1) goalie Stephanie Beall knocked down a centering pass in the 55th minute that landed right on the foot of Ashlee Stevens whose open look missed right. Stevens later fed Tracey Schuster with a great pass right in front of the net that Schuster struck high late in the second half.

Beall finished with four saves and Cocks finished with six.

The Highlanders will return to action on the road at the University of the Pacific in a Big West Conference match on Friday, October 4 at 7:00 PM.

UCR Ties UOP, 1-1

(Oct. 4, 2002) - The UC Riverside Highlanders and the University of the Pacific Tigers battled to a 1-1 tie at Stagg Memorial Stadium inStockton on Friday night.

The Highlanders got on the board first with an unassisted goal from freshman Renee Scachetti in the 33th minute. The Tigers answered in the second half with a goal by Jaimi Corona-Flowers in the 69th minute.

Scachetti had an opportunity to score in overtime with a one-on-one with the UOP 'keeper Megan Pickering but was denied and the game ended in a 1-1 tie

In her first start since September 6 against San Diego, Highlander 'keeper Katie Blank recorded a season-high 10 saves while her counterpart had 11 saves. UOP outsot UCR, 25-16.

The Highlanders will return to action on the road at the Cal State Northridge in a Big West Conference match on Sunday, October 6 at 2:30 PM.

Scachetti's Goal Gives Highlanders a 1-0 Win

(Oct. 6, 2002) - Renee Scachetti's goal in the 10th minute was the only tally in the Highlanders' 1-0 win over Cal State Northridge on the road Sunday. With the win the Highlanders move to 7-4-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the Big West. Northridge fell to 1-10 overall and 0-2 in the Big West.

Scachetti scored when her shot deflected off goalkeeper Jen Jasper and into the net.

Goalkeeper Katie Blank got the win for the Highlanders, facing 20 shots and recording nine saves, including a missed penalty shot by Matador Melissa Cleal. Jasper had four saves.

The Highlanders had 10 shots, five on goal.

Scachetti Named Big West Player of the Week

(Oct. 8, 2002) - UC Riverside's Renee Scachetti (Torrance, CA) was selected as the Big West Player of the Week. Scachetti scored both Highlanders goals this past weekend in a win and a tie. The freshman midfielder opened the scoring against Pacific in the 34th minute. She scored the only goal of the game against Cal State Northridge just ten minutes into the contest.

 

 

Jensen's Two Goals Help Highlanders Rally Past Aggies

(Oct. 11, 2002) - Lisa Jensen’s second goal of the game broke a 2-2 tie in sudden death overtime, as the UC Riverside Highlanders remained undefeated in Big West play with an exciting 3-2 win over the Utah State Aggies at the UCR Soccer Stadium on Friday.

Seven minutes into the first overtime period, freshman Tanya Noonan launched an acrobatic flip throw right in front of the Utah net, that reigning Big West Player of the Week Renee Scachetti headed to an open Jensen for the game winner.

With the win, the Highlanders improve to 8-4-1, 2-0-1 in the Big West, while Utah State falls to 6-6-2, 0-3.

Jensen’s goal sent the game into overtime, knotting the score at two in the 59th minute with her first goal of the evening. Ashley Stevens launched a shot that Utah State goalie Megan Mills knocked down, Jensen collect the deflection and blasted the ball into the net.

Utah State jumped on the board first, with Brigid Turner dribbling through two UC Riverside defenders and beating UCR goalie Katie Blank to the right post for a 1-0 lead.

UCR tied the score ten minutes later, on a penalty shot from Scachetti. Jessica Armel’s shot from ten yards out hit off the post and Vannessa Chanez was fouled trying to put a leg on the rebound, setting up Scachetti’s goal.

The Aggies regained the lead early in the second half, when Turner scored her second goal of the game off of a great feed from Chanel Blaquiere.

The Highlanders will return to action on Sunday in a Big West Conference match-up, playing host to the University of Idaho on Sunday, October 13 at 1:00 PM.

Highlanders Shutout Idaho, 2-0

(Oct. 13, 2002) - Kelly Hurley and Tracy Schuster each scored a goal as the Highlanders moved to 3-0-1 in the Big West with a 2-0 win over visiting Idaho.

The Highlanders took a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute when Hurley converted from about eight yards out. Following a foul, Kristi Tanaka served a kick into the box, which Hurley took and put on net. Goalkeeper Janell Miller stopped the initial shot, but Hurley got the rebound and put it in.

The Highlanders added to the lead in the 65th minute when Tracy Schuster picked up the ball at midfield and beat the defense, putting it far post for the score.

The game was scoreless at halftime. The Highlanders outshot the Vandals 6-4 and had several good scoring opportunities, including a shot by Hurley that hit the cross bar and bounced in front of the net, but was cleared. On the afternoon Hurley had a game-high eight shots, four on goal.

Idaho peppered UCR goalie Kristin Cocks with long shots in the second half but never really tested her. Jennifer Kiebel's header in the final minute was the only difficult test for the senior, who made six saves and moved to 7-1 on the season with her third shutout of the season. The Highlanders outshot the Vandals (2-8-1, 0-3-1) 21-15.

The Highlanders (9-4-1, 3-0-1) return to action on Friday, November 18 as they face UC Irvine on the road.

Highlanders Fall at Irvine, 1-0

(Oct. 19, 2002) - The UC Riverside Highlanders dropped their first Big West match of the season,falling to UC Irvine 1-0 on the road Friday.

The game's only goal came at 67:24 of the second half when freshman Tiffany Scheibley scored the first goal of her UCI career of a header inside the box.

UCR goalkeeper Kristin Cocks had nine saves for the Highlanders, facing 18 shots. The Highlanders managed six shots against Anteater goalkeeper Chelsea McCarthy, who earned her second shutout of the season..

LBSU Squeaks Past UCR, 2-1

(Oct. 20, 2002) - Diana Sanguinetti s penalty kick in the 83rd minute was the deciding goal as Long Beach State handed the Highlanders their second Big West loss of the season, 2-1 at Long Beach Sunday.

Allison Reeves scored first for the 49ers, tallying in the 26th minute off of assists by Sanguinetti and Kristin Travis.

Kristi Tanaka tied it in the 80th minute, firing from 35 yards out. The HIghlanders had several scoring opportunities, but goalkeeper Hannah Cochrun was up to the task, recording seven saves on 10 UCR shots. The 49ers had 20 shots on UCR 'keeper Katie Blank, who made four saves.

The winning score came after Abie Curry was knocked down in the box by a Highlander defender. Sanguinetti then took the penalty kick and scored at 82:11.

The Highlanders are off until November 1, when they will host UC Santa Barbara in their final homestand of the season.

Gauchos Beat Highlanders, 2-0

(Nov. 2, 2002) -The Highlanders could not stop the highest scoring tandem in the Big West Conference, as the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos defeated the UC Riverside Highlanders 2-0 behind goals from Jen Borcich and Kriystal Stanza at the UCR soccer stadium on Friday.

Santa Barbara remained undefeated in Big West play, improving to 6-0-1, 13-3-2 on the season, and UCR falls to 3-3-1, 9-7-1 on the season.

Borcich got the ball deep in UCR territory on a cross from Stanza in the 19th minute. Borcich juked a Highlander defender and put the ball to the right post past a diving Katie Blank and the Gauchos opened up a 1-0 advantage.

Santa Barbara added to the lead with five minutes remaining in the first half when Sandza made contact on a cross in front of the Highlander net and somehow managed to get the ball through a crowd of UCR defenders for a two goal advantage. Sandza leads the Big West with 23 goals.

The Highlanders had many chances on the evening putting 11 shots on the Gaucho net, but UCSB goalkeeper Jamie Cosidine recorded six saves. Blank tallied eight saves in taking the loss.

The Highlanders will return to action on Sunday in a Big West Conference match-up, playing host to Cal Poly in the last home game of the season on Sunday, November 3 at 1:00 PM. Seniors Colleen Sweeney, Kristin Cocks and Katie Small will be playing their last collegiate games.

UCR Loses To Cal Poly in Home Finale

(Nov. 3, 2002) - Megan Shlegel and Alexa Jontulovich scored a goal each as Cal Poly held on to a 2-0 win over UC Riverside, in the Highlander’s home finale on Sunday at the UCR Soccer Stadium.

With two minutes remaining in the first half, Cal Poly finally broke a scoreless tie as Shlegel scored for a 1-0 Mustang lead. Erin Martin received a pass at the top of the bow and fell to the ground under intense pressure from Highlander defenseman Kristi Tanka. Martin somehow managed to pass the ball to her left and hit a streaking Shlegel who beat Kristin Cocks to the right post.

In the 65th minute, Cal Poly padded the lead as Brooke Flamson dribbled through the Highlander defense and centered to Jontulovich who put the ball into the net.

With the win, Cal Poly improves to (7-1 Big West, 12-6) while UCR falls to 3-3-1, 9-8-1.

Cocks recorded ten saves in taking the loss. Mustang goalie Greta Shirdon tallied three saves in posting the shut out. The Mustangs out shot UCR 22-14.

The Highlanders will return to action on Friday, November 8, in a Big West Conference match-up, to play Cal State Fullerton on the road in their season finale at 1:00 PM.

Highlanders Beat Fullerton in Finale, 1-0

(Nov. 8, 2002) -A free kick from about 50 yards out by UC Riverside's Kristi Tanaka found the back of the net after deflecting off the heads of Renee Scachetti and a Titan defender to give the Highlanders a 1-0 win in their season finale at Fullerton Friday.

"The team stuck to the game plan for 90 minutes, and we didn't abandon it," Head Coach Veronica O'Brien said. "I have never been so proud of a group of women."

The goal was initially declared an "own goal" but will be reviewed.

The Highlander win doused the Titans' playoff hopes, dropping them to 12-5-1 overall and 6-3 in conference. The Highlanders move to 10-8-1 overall and a 4-4-1 in the Big West. The win gave the Highlanders their first winning season in just their second year of existance.

Riverside goalkeeper Katie Blank had 11 saves on the evening as the Titans outshot UCR 22-10. The match was extremely physical with 23 fouls on the Titans and 14 for UCR.

Highlanders Have Three Named to All-Conference Team

(Nov. 13, 2002) -The UC Riverside Highlanders put a cap on the best season in their short history by having three players named to the All Big West Conference Teams Tuesday.

Sophomore defender Kristi Tanaka and freshman midfielder Renee Scachetti were named to the second team and sophomore midfielder Kelly Hurley was named to the honorable mention squad.

Scachetti led the Highlanders in scoring with seven goals and four assists, good for 18 points. Her 69 shots also lead the team. Tanaka had two goals and three assists on the season from her defense position.

Hurley had three goals and three assists on the season and provided a feisty presence in the UCR midfield.

UCR finished sixth in the conference with a 4-4-1 record overall and a 10-8-1 record overall.

Last season Tanaka was named to the second team and Hurley received honorable mention. The teams are selected by conference head coaches.

Highlanders Receive NSCAA Team Academic Award

(Feb. 1, 2003) -The UC Riverside women' soccer team has received the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award for the 2002 school year, Coach Veronica O'Brien announced.

The award, sponsored by adidas, is given to teams who earn and maintain above a 3.0 team GPA.

"We are proud of our team," O'Brien said. "They took care of business on the field and in the classroom this year."
